District pushing for Proposition 47
Money from $13.05-billion bond initiative is
needed to complete work begun under
Newport-Mesa's 2-year-old Measure A.

NEWPORT-MF.SA -When a
$HO-million bond measure for
school improvements paued
two years ago, proponents ex·
pected to get a chunk ol money
from the state to help in the up·
grading and m~mizi.ng of 28
district schools.
What they didn't expect was a
court decision and high demand
to drain money from the state
schools facilities program faster
than they could become eligible
for it
But that is precisely what hap-
pened, said Paul Reed, assistant
superintendent And It is why
the Harbor Council PTA is urging
Newport-Mesa residents to vote
"yes" on Proposition 47, a
$13.05-bWJon bond initiative for
building and upgrading K· 12
schools, college and universities.
"These are the matching
funds that will help us complete
our Improvements at each of the
sites, and we are counting on the
voters and our commwlity in
particular to vote 'yes' so we can
have a completion of the work
that has been outlined at each
site," said Patty Ouistiansen,
Harbor Council president
The district launched its facill·
ties improvement program two

Mr. Johnson was married to Mrs.

Anyway, Mr. Johmon picked up some

When confronted with ques-

Dixon and MamooI seemed

The charges against Irvine
stem from various incidents
starting in March, when he
allegedly got into a dispute
with a neighbor and threw
acid on his car, officials with
the district attorney's office
have said.
Then, Irvine started pur-
suing a 19-year-old woman
who already had a boy-

were spurned, Irvine alleg-
edly threw acid on the boy-

Ultimately. Irvine went to

woman and her boyfriend
worked -with a concealed

threatened the boyfriend
with bodily harm, according
to the district attorney's of-

are the city of Costa Mesa, Police
Chief Dave Snowden and 12
other police officers who re-

Another strange but true fact
is the groups held dear by the

Everyone wants a group lo

In a harsh reality that lacks
friendship, most children will
choose to take what they can get
and find comfort in the fact that
they have someone they can
relate to. But what is it that
shapes these traits that allow
some people to be so at ease
and others so uncomfortable?
I have a theory on this one. ll

years of a child's education. If
you can think back, which you
probably can't, you would
probably realize that those who

No one back in elementary

Most kids bad their parents
didn't le.now how to play.
But let's delve even further
into what makes up this
everlasting quality. Perhaps it's
something that isn't even the
chiJd's doing.
What about the naming
process? Now there's a real
important thing most take
lightly. Lets be honest: How
many popular kids had names
lilce Hubert or Alouicious? Then
think back and realize how
many had names like John or ..
John. Kind of a funny
coincidence I think. bur I'm not
doubting the power of all the
eloquently named infants. Some
day maybe little Jeremiah will
become a star softball player,
but hey, in my opinion that's
overrated.
Now, for my last tangent, I
think l'U bring out a local
favorite, the money issue. The
rich lcJds seem to always have
the best parties or get the nicest
cars. It's a good thing they get
the big ones, too, because this
way they aren't injured when
they run me over while I'm
driving my Volkswagen. So let
me say this: There is something
out there that makes some or us
jocks and some of us nerds. but I
obviously have no idea what it is.

The real Westside

In West's commentary on the
Westside he noles that all one hears
these days is "Westside, Westside,
Westside. Until recently that was just
so much ambient noise to me.· I'm
pleased that Wesl has decided to take
nole or the ambient noise of the
Westside. Perhaps he is hearing more
or a "Westside, Westside, Westside"

level is rising.
While I am happy that West is taking
a more active interest in my part of
Costa Mesa. I don't think his

surviving on the Westside. Seeing nice

next to Mapartments teeming with

of actually living in that landscape.
I live and work on the Westside. Sit
back. Let me take you on a brief tour.
The "apartment buildings teeming
with activity.· That's true. You have no
idea how many people (really) live in
the Westside. lf you want to get a more
accurate accounting of just how many
people a two-bedroom apartment can
hold, you must be around when we
have one of the numerous traffic
accidents that occur on my street. The
amount of follcs thal pours out of the
surrounding apartments to
rubberneck [ls shocking).
Now, it's no secret that we have
some crowded housing over here.
During one of the above traffic drills
we watched 25 8lJY3 pour out of an
apartment. They weren't just visiting
either, as the same 25 poured out of
the same unit the next morning to
head for the Job Center. Welcome to
the Westside.
One of the problems with Costa
Mesa, and particularly the West.side, is
the lack of planning and foresight that

ls this a tragedy? Yes, it i~. and not
just from my own front porch but for
the entire community and many
communities elsewhere in Lhe United
States today. This is the Westside, bur
look over your shoulder, fellow Costa
Mesans. You are not immune to this
tidal wave.
The former description 1s some of
the morning activuy on the Westside.
Afternoon brings the travelmg
produce trucks, ice cream trucks and
pushcarts of aJJ descriptions. How
many of the above are licensed in
Costa Mesa is unknown to me. For the
most part, Westsiders have
accommodated this new way of doing
business, and unless it directly causes
annoyance, we accept that these street
vendors (if licensed) are a legitimate
way to do business.
However. the vending trucks are
often not considerace. They block
traffic, blare horns and play loud
music. Then there are the vendors
who don't feel the necessity to invest
in building a wagon and ply their
wares out of "borrowed" shopping
carts with a towel thrown over the
contents to keep them fresh. I've
gotten used lo all of the above. After
all, this is the Westside.
·Alleged gang activity.· I must
correct you on the use of the word
"alleged"; this is a "for sure" thing.
There is gang activity on the Westside.
Sometimes there is more and
sometimes there Is less activity. How
do I le.now? Let me explain.
We.have a particular music or the
night here on the Westside. Whistling.
It is the whistllng of gang members up
and down the street. An otherwise·
pleasurable sound that oo longer
brings joy to my ears. Then there was
the night we left our home to drive to
a safe location for our evening walk.
We found our driveway and entire
street blocked by poltoe can. There
was a lot of commodon. Noise.
Battering rams. Doora belng knocked
in at the family HUD housing units
next door. Drugs. guns. men taken
away. Finally quiet. Howt!'WI', they had
abandoned a Large frightened dog in a
corner of their yard. A new pet for our
family. You aee. we are adaptable here
on the Weslllde.

The city of Costa Mesa simply must
pay more attention to this geographic
area. If anyone has looked at the

Graham polntS out that moat
voters in the 48th Congressional
District are oppoMd to an El Toro
airport. His suggestion: using part
of Camp Pendleton for an
international airport that would
serve both Orange and San Diego
counties.
• FOREIGN POLICY:
Simple, Graham says. •Trade
creates peace.• He advocates
opening up trade restrictions with
Iran and Cuba and giving the
president "fast tradt" trade
authority to ease trade deals. He
also believes that the more the
country can do to promote
information abroad, the better.
Televisions and satellite dishes
should be given out to trouble
spots across the globe, from
Cuba to Iraq.
• soaAL SECURITY:
Over the next decade, Graham
says, Social Security needs to be
maintained at current levets,
induding cost of living
adjustments. He also backs small
inaeases in Medicare
subscription drug allocations, If
the funding comes from savings
elsewhere.

Graham may be making hay

a series of proposals to improve
the public school system, lndud·

If be wins the seat, Graham
said he would push for $25 bil·

year for teachers' salaries. In re-
turn, be said he would ask for an
