fund-raising machine of an in-

state's response.
George Henry, who was shop-

W hen the Nazis captured
Greece during World War
D, they demanded that a
Greek soldier take down
the Greek flag from the Acropolis and
relace it with the Nazi flag.
The soldier was so distraught at the
national humiliation that instead of
turning the Greek flag over to the
Nazis, he wrapped himself in it and
jumped from the precipice.
He is memorialized with a plaque
that graces the Acropolis.
Orange Coast College professor
lrini Vallera-Rickerson shared this
story with her students on Monday to
illustrate Greek pride in their country
and their independence.
But she doesn't teach a history
class.
Vallera-Rickerson teaches History
and Appreciation of Western Art. She
enlivens the class by infusing the
curriculwn with historical.knowledge
For her course, History and Appreciation of
Western Art, OCC professor lrini Vallera-Rickerson
believes there is no appreciation without history
and entertaining anecdotes that
make the centuries-old subject
matter come alive.
Mlf I just talked about history and
art, they would be bored to death.•
Vallera-Rickerson said •Tu me, art is
a reflection of the history, so you can't

background"
The class covers architecture,
sculpture and painting from
prehistory to the Gothic era. Topics
discussed include art and
architectural vocabulary, styles and
important artists and their major
works. The class also requires
students to visit both The Getty
Center In Los Angeles and The
Bowers Museum in Santa Ana
On Monday, Vallera-Rickenon, who
has earned the honor of oa:a 1eacher
of the Year and the county Teacher of
the Year. discussed the Hellenic period
of Greek art and architecture.
spanning from 650 to 323 B.C She
discussed bow the ancient Greeb
considered sculpne. architecture and
painting to be inten:onnected.
"I th.ink this is a wonderful
concept." Vallera-Rickerson said •1t's
how we should design today, too,
because a lot of times today, we do
thin8" as an afterthought.~
Vallera-Rlckenon is from Greece.
She goes back every summer to
attend excavations and restoration
projects such as the one at the
Acropolis. which she has been going
to since 1985.
On Monday. she also showed how
far she is willing to go for her students
when she showed pictures of a
private ceremony at the Acropolis she
was able to take only after cajoling a
Greek police officer to let her in.
"It's extremely important for
professors to have firsthand
experience with their subjects, if
possible," Vallera-Rickerson said
"When you have been in a place, you
can talk about it differently."
She even draws on a Greek method
of intellectual discuss.ion -the
Socratic method -to invotve
students in the lecture-oriented class.
She divides them inlo small groupl'to
answer questions by examining the
relevant concepts.
Thu Ha nan, 19, said she is
inspired by Vallera · Rickerson's zeal
for the history of art.
"She's really passionate and makes
art history interesting.· Tran said
-she has a lot of enthusiasm.·

~n't tum Costa Mesa into
a low-rent city
Certain Costa Mesa City Council

the idea of implementing a ·rent

Mesa. In principle, programs like this
limit the rights of the property
owners to raise rents and evict
tenant& This may sound attractive to
tenanu. but for anyone who has
lived under these conditions, it is
actually quite a blunder. In cities
where these programs have been
enacted. such as Los Angeles, Santa
Monica and San Francisco, the
results have been very much the
opposite or those intended. Slovenly
tenanu, drug dealers and others are
often allowed to stay in the
apartments despite the best efforts or
the owners to remove them. The
rents are held ftat. while the property

lead to deferred maintenance and a

These issues result in lawsuits

There are only two members of the
current city council that have been

Really?
Where is the "integrity" in making

your opponents instead or. oh, I

Where is the "straight talk" in

Finally, where is the ·common

realize you were behind this "poll,·
where the "pollsters." instead of
seeking public opinion, were very
obviously trying to sway it against

As to the last, perhaps you went

Your endorsement of Dixon increases
the probability Monahan will get his

why Monahan's the first sitting
councU person in Costa Mesa·s
history to run a slate against another
incumbent? Are you aware
someone's been making smear calls
to Republican voters trying to tum
this election lnto a party· line vote?
We need Monahan on the council;
he plays an lmportant role and leads
a vital group or the community. But
we can't afford to give him two seats.
His constituency isn't that large. And.
we can't afford to give Dixon another

Two new
principals
great for
Costa Mesa
C bange is hard for most of us
because we overestimate the
value of the status quo, and
underestimate the value of what
could be gained by change.
At Costa Mesa Hijp1 School, we
have just gone through a major
change. We started this year with a
brand new administration with
two new principals: Fred Navarro
for the high school. and for the
first time, John
Garcia. as a
separate
principal for the
junior high. The
two new
principals are
working weU
together as a
team. but many
._ _ __,,..._ _ _, of the students
SARA
BRYANT
have found it
hard to adjust to
their new ways
of running the
school. I ~en that this duo of
principals is just what we need.
Among the controversial oew
policies they have introduced is
one to deal with a persistent
attendance problem at the school.
Apparently. our past is littered
with "too many tardies.~ The
principals recognized that tardies
are very d~ruptive to the
educauonal experience of first
period, since the late arrivals
interrupt the class for all.
They decided to address the
issue of 1ardiness by locking the
school gates at 7:40 a.m .. when
classes stan. Students who arrive
after the gates ace dosed are
required to report to the office
before going to class. Some argue
that thfa just makes tardy studen~
even later to class than they
already would be. But really. if t.tm
happened to you once. I would bet
that you would maJce every effort
not be tardy again.
Another unfortunate
consequence of the new policy is
that studen1s around campus have
started calling our school a
~pnson" because the gates that
were once open during all hours of
the school day are now locked
dunng the -.chool day. But why, we
may ask. is this bad7 Our sc:bool
has always been a •cJosed
campus,· so really, the principals
are nol introducing new rules to
inconvenience the students;
rather. they are implementing
previously existing ones.
Perhaps the students at Mesa
who are opposing the new wayi.
are really objecting to having to
change their ingrained habits.
Perhaps they view all change as
undesirable because it requires
them to give up che comfort of~
fa.mil.iar. But hindsight usually
shows the opposite: that change 1s
invigontin& mid new ways or
doing bu&lneae can stimulate yet
more new ldeu for further
change.
A ud feature of the current
debete la that mlllY of the
sbtdents who dllm to dislike the
new lldmtnt.tradoa canoot really
articulate a reuoo for their
disapproval. It seems tbal they just
assume that becauae many
