Attack on

masks a
failed fight
R ichard 'lllylor got
blindsided last week by
two members of the
Newport Beach City Council,
whom he hopes to join on Nov.
5.
It all had to do with a malling
piece sent out by Tu:ytor about a
month ago. I'm looking at it now.
It's an oversized postcard with
the headline fNo JWA
Expansion.• It offers up Taylor as
the "only council candidate
experienced in fighting
uncontrolled airport growth".
And on the baeJcside, it adds that
JOSEPH

"volunteered

the successful
negotiation of
the John

Agreement"
That's what
set ofl'the
shots at
Tuytor by
Newport Beach Council
members Dennis O'Neil and
Norma Glover.
They went into considerable
detail in pointing out that Thytor
had no direct invotvement in the
diseusaions leading to a
settlement agreement -likely
to be cbaDenpd -that offers aome....,.r.am concet11ons in

in my view, quite aocurate.
The letter of these charges
against him may have some
validity, but certainly not the.
spirit His devotion to the PJ
Thro airport cause over the last
eight years as a tireless director
of the Airport Working Group
cannot be challenged. The letter
writers who responded to the

made that point very clearly. I
can't improve on what they said
and would add only two passing
thoughts;
•The dmfng of this aitidsm is
interesting. It audaced several
weeks aft.er the flier was malled.
but much doeer to the

\;thank for bike trails ··
Who was responsible for our extensive biJce trails
in Newport ~ch and Orange County'? The answer
is MhdCBlake, certainfynot Don Webb. Apparently be
is claiming all the credit we were seri~ rklers,ln th0$e days ... Dick.
Higby, Henry Madel. the Cottons. we all rode every
week.end 20 to SO miles, and that was when t,be biJce
trails were started.
1972 -tha(s a long time to remember, back when
Mary Blake rallied the Girl Scouts to get behind her
idea ~ her plan of h.ow to get bike trails built in .
Newport Beach so that children could ride their bikes
safety to school and lbe beach. "Bicycles to the
beacbH was Mary's slogan The goal obviously
expanded. .
Mary's vision and tenacity won over !;he bike trails
committee members at that time.
Convincing the City Council that bike' trails were
needed in our community was another mader. Mary
showed up.at the Oty Council meeting, haVing
gotten the issue concerning bike trails on the agenda.
with Girl Scouts of all ages in lllliform.
Approval~ given. and the plaque
commemorating the first bike trail is on the
northwest comer of Jamboree and Eastbluff Drive. It
· had to start somewhere. .
The effort to construct the bike trails m die city of ·
Newport Beach represented a combined effort of
bard=womng committee.members. interested
residents. busines.5 owne? and city staf[ Only
through the cooperation of all these parties had the
bike trailuystem as we know it been made possible.
This was about the time that Mary Blake and I
were introduced. we became good friends, and along
with her lifelong friend. Dick. Higby. I watched with
interest as progress was made on the bike trails
throughout the county. .
I understand that a lot of credit goes to Webb for
bis engineering slcills amt his hard wort on the bike
trails conunlttee, but let us also not forget all the
· others: Betsy Carpenter; Allen BeeJci Steve ScholkotT
and Carolyn Hencl.rickson, to name only a few who
served.. .
Yes, We have Mary Blake to thank for her efforts
and the success of our wonderful bike trails.

Tuesdily, the Dailv Pilot ran a

'Phe letter writers come to the

It was determin!d by the city's
