A single "YES'' vote this Election Day will benefit Orange County in so many ways that leaders from throughout the area and state are
saying "YES ON .47". 8.400 new jobs, $420 million in local wages, higher property values for homeowners and better schools for kids.
That's a billion dollars of economic activity all in Orange County. Prop 47 raises more than $500 million to build classrooms and make
renovations at our 465 K-12 schools, seven community colleges and two distinguished public universities.

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER
ABUSYSTREm
The large, stately house that you
drive by every morning on the way
to wort has peaked your int~L
When you finally call for an
appointment and see the house • -
you love it! And the price is lower
than prices for similar houses on
quieter side streets.
Houses located on busy streets
may represent some of the best
buys in terms of space and
amenities for the price. Somb
buyers who are very sensitive to
noise or concerned about small
children or pets may automatically
rule out houses that are located oo
~residential streets. If you doo'I
share these same concerns, yoo will
find many benefits lo a house in
this location. lf the sellers have
made pricing concessions on the
property based on it's location, this
could open up an opportunity for
you to own a far grander house
than you thought you could .afford!
Just remember that when you
sell the house. the pool of
Jl"OSPC"(ive buyers may be smaller,
and you may have lo pass on a
similar price break to the oext
owner.

THEATER
SCR to open
Argyros
Stage with
'Violet Hour'
By Tom Titus ..
T he long wait is coming to an end
South Coast Repertory followers -
who have been patiently awaiting the
unveiling of SCR's newest theatrical venue,
the Julianne Argyros Stage. through its
summer-long construction process -will
finally see the new showplace up close and
personal next weekend
And what could be a more fitting
inaugural than the latest worid prenliere
from one of SCRs favorite contemporary
playwrights?
Over the years. Richard Greenberg has
been commissioned by South Coast Rep to
create half a dozen plays for the Costa Mesa
stage -"The Extra Man" (1991), "Night
and Her Star.;" (1994). "Three Days of Ram"
(1997), "Hurrah at Last· ( 1998) and ·Everett
Beekin" (2000).
The la1est. "The Violet I lour," will open
the Argyros Stage to the public.
When the playwright heard that the new
theater was to be built. he asked that it
open with a new play of his. Given
Greenberg's aack record at SCR. ii wasn't a
hard decision for artistic directors David
F.riimes and Martin Benson. ·
Greenberg's "The Da22.le" was the last
play to be produced on what was formerly
known as the Second Stage last spring. He
also adapted "The Thumph of l.Dve" for a
production at SCR.
In ~e Violet Hour,· Greenberg recreates
the early 20th century -1919, to be exact
-when a novice Manhattan book
publisher fresh from Princeton and Worid
War I is searching his cluttered office for his
evening theater tickets. He also faces a
decision: He must choose between two
manusaipts for publication, one a massive
tome written by his best friend, the other
an autobiography of his lover .
Before he steps into a Broadway-bound
cab that night. a lifetime of love and
personal and career decisions may already
have passed -or j~ begun. Such ~ the
nature of the prolific Greenberg's prose.
Greenberg's latest SCR project. his eighth.
ranks him as the most-produced living
playwright at South Coast Repertory. and as
the third all-time produced. beating out
Moliere. Thnnessee Williams, Artln.U' Miller
and Harold Piotet: Only hbspeare and
Shaw have seen DlOfe action than

Newport Habor's Michael McDonald drags two Laguna Hills defenders for yardage Friday night.
NEWPORT
Continued from B 1
Newport's ground game,
which produced just one carry
for mlnus-1 yard in a first quar-
ter dominated by the visitors.
consumed the final 4:25, ham-
mering away for tlln:e first
downs to clinch the victory.
Victory appeared fleeting for
Newport in the first 13 minutes,
when lAguna Hills put together
scoring drives of 12 and IO plays
to monopolize the ball and the
momeotum.
But Newport Harbor lcick-
started Its offense, mixing senior
tailback Dartangan Johnson with
the accurate passing of senior
quarterback Michael McDonald
to lgnite the crowd and the
scoreboard.
Johnson. who finished with
140 yards on 22 carries, carried
four times on Harbor's first
touchdown ~. including a 38-
yard bounce around the left side
and the 4-yard capper.
McDonald, who completed 14
of 22 for 214 yards, without an
interception, had two comple-
tions for 24 yards on the march,
which, after the first of four Joel
Walker conversion lcicks, pulled
the hosts within 10-7.
Laguna Hills answered with a
penalty-laced 11-play procession
the produced a 24-yard Larson
field goal that left Harbor just
more than four minutes to wrest
the halftime lead.
After Johnson returned a kick-
off 40 yards, Harbor went 56
yards on just six plays, with
~-Johnson's 3-yard run the final-
ize?, to take a 14-13 lead with
2:17 left before intermission.
After Laguna went three-and-
out. Harbor took over at its own
41 with 1 :36 left and used just 73
seconds to claim a 21-13 lead,
when McDonald rolled left and
hit Spencer Unk on a 13-yard
out pattern for a 21-13 halftime
advantage.
Newport continued to roU
with the second-half ldclcotf,
When Ubk fielded & 40-yard
touchdown bomb to cap ·a
teW!D-play, 80-yard drive that
made It 28-13 with 9:38 left in

Link finished with nine
catches for 135 yards and two

Harbor's· 28 points in just Jess
than 12 minutes was a remark-
able turnaround after its offense
barely saw the field in the first
period. The difference?
"'We finally got the ball," Brin-
kley said with a smile.
Newport produced 22 of the
game's 40 first downs and 359 of
the game's 641 offensive yards.
"The offense won the game for
us,~ Posey said. "But when the
defense needed lo make big
plays, we came up with them.~
Laguna Hills was hampered by
the loss of starting tailback Lo·
renzo Jackson, who sustained an
apparent concussion late in the
first half and did not return. Jack-
son had 67 yards on 14 carries,
before leaving the game.
"'We played them tough, but
we didn't finish," Hawks Coach
Bruce ingalls said. "But give
Newport credit, It didn't give up.
Our kids battled for the whole
48. We're a couple plays here or
there away from being 3-0 in
league, including Foothill"
Brinkley, who used the shot-
gun formation and ran a big re-
verse to Unk. said his offense
was the difference.
"We moved the ball up and
down the field, It was just a mat-
ter of gettlng (the Hawb)
stopped. I thought we bad a
pretty good offensive pachge."

a tie, the eighth week of the high
school football s'eason will bring
the first Academy League victory
to either Sage HHJ or visiting St.
Margaret's, which square off in a
league contest today at 2:30 p.m.
It's the final league game of
the season for Sage Hill (3-4, 0-2
in league), which hopes 10 avoid
a winless league campaign in its
firs t varsity season.
San Juan Capistmno-based St.
Margaret's (3-3) has yet to play a
league game and had a bye last
week in order to prepare for its
three-game closing stretch
against Academy opposition.
It's a game Sage Hill Coach
Tom Monarch has said would be
his team's best chance for a
league win.
"St. Margaret's ii. a good team,
but I think.
size wise,
and • in
terms of
quickness,
we pair off
well,"
Monarch
said. "This is a pride game, espe-
cialJy for our seniors. You only go
t() high school once. Later on in
life, when you sit down at the
dinner table and tell your family
about when you played football,
you can either tell what a great
game it could have been, or
what a great game it was.•
Monarch's continually improv-
ing team, which starts more than
a handful of freshmen, is corning
off a solid effort last week in a
34-20 loss to Mary Star of the
Sea.
·I think we played our best
game of the year last week.·
Monarch said.
The Lightning has evolved
into a passing-dominated of-
fense, keyed by senior quarter-
back Zach Friedrichs, who has
propelled the offense in recent
weeks despite a severe thigh
bru!se that h as limited his mo-
