• What .. the moat~
...... in the statt7 In
Newport-Mesa?
The most pressing Issue facing
the state is re-creating an
environment that embraces
and encourages free enterprise
for our legal citizens and
residents. A vibrant business
climate provides the most
opportunity for businesses,
working families and
individuals to succeed and
provide for themselves. This
sets the stage for further
spending reductions and relief
of our tax burden. Some
specifics include reforming
worlters' compensation,
addressing illegal immigralion,
reducing and including sunset
provisions so regulations will
be reviewed or expire after a
period of time. repealing
Senate Bill 2, the
state-mandated heath coverage
bill and the elimination of
frivolous lawsuits.
The most important
Newport-Mesa issue is John
Wayne Airport. I pledge to use
any power I have to ensure that
the caps are maintained at
John Wayne Airport and that
expansion is limited in
perpetuity.
• Whst is the best solution to
the lt.8te'• budget crisis?
Unfortunately, the liberal and
free-spending policies of the
past several years have left vs
with a range of distasteful
solutions to the state budget
crisis for the short term. In the
Assembly, I will never vote for a
tax increase. It is imperative for
the short term to pass
Propositions 57 and 58. I will
hold my nose when I vote for
this deficit bond. but we need
to allow the governor to
stabilize the fiscal crisis so we
can then begin the sustained
work to cut spending. The truth
of the matter 1s that although I

MARKC. DUSTIN /DAILY PILOT
Chonchol D. Gupta, a student at UC Irvine. 1s running as a Republican candidate for the 70th District Assembly seat.
• What Is the most pNSsing
luue in tha 1Ut87 In
Newport-Mesa?
I first decided to run for state
Assembly when some of my
schoolmates could not
continue their higher
education because the
University of California
increased its annual tu111on by
near1y $1 ,500. There is no
reason that students should
have to give up all the hard
work end studious hours they
invested through high school
and through college, just
because our state government
can not correctly balance a
budget. Our school system
should remain great regardless
of the state of our economy I
• What 19 the best solution to
the aute'• budget crial17
Returning California to a
business-friendly state by
getting rid of outrageous
workers' compensation
insurance premiums will make
it easier for both small and big
businesses alike to hire more
employees. We can end our
reliance on foreign labor and
return jobs to Californians.
Ano1herway to curb our
economy's deficit is 10 halt
illegal immigration. Although
our nation's immigration policy
should be handled by the
federal government, billions of
our state's ta)( dollars are being
used when our federal
government fails to enforce
border policies.
• Assuming the Legislature
stays In Oemocr•tic hands,
how will you wofit wtth the
majority party7
It is my commitment to
honesty and truth that has
motivated me to fund this
election without special
interest money. I will represent
the best interests of the citizens
of Orange County and '
California. By all means, I feel
bi-partisanship can be anained
.
in our state's legislature, but I
will not compromise my
values and obligation to the
voters by sacrificing my
integrity. By electing Arnold
Schwarzenegger as our
governor, Orange County and
California voters have spoken,
~ying ·1rs time for changelH It
is time for a different mentality
aboJt California politics; for
new, fresh ideas that will
supercharge our state's
economy; and for a new,
innovative candidate who is
willing to say no to special
interests groups, and who will
do what is right for California's
people.
• What makn you the best
person for the job7
I vow to make education my
top priority. Students require
businesses for jobs.
Businesses require schools for
an educated workforce. By
allowing our education system
to sink to one of the worst in
America, we are setting up our
business Industry fo r even
more failure.
Many say that I am not the
typical candidate for office. My
answer 1s that they are right,
and that this is not the time we
should be electing typical
candidates. California needs
new ideas. new jobs and a
candidate who will wo rk for
the people ... not the special
interests.
• What one thing would you
hope to accomplish whi .. in
office7
I will work to ensure that
California is put back on an
economically stable track -
one where enterprise is
encouraged to succeed instead
of encouraged to leave our
state. I will ensure the rights of
all citrzens of our great state,
and I pledge to work against
any legislation that will
jeopardize the strength of our
p4,blic education system.

"AU those guys are even." Mang said.
Rut 11 is all about chemistry between
partners and Mang won't be afraid to
switch lineups if things aren't clidring.
So far in preseason practice, play has
gone smooth!'(.
·Tue three doubles reams are playing
as well a.o; th e second doubles• team last

is a different sort of pressure out there.
l\.vo of them have never played in big
