NEWPORT-MFSA -Unpopular gu-
bernatorial candidates may ruin local
races because af poor voter turno~
resJdents and experts say.
Former Costa Mesa Councilman Joe
Erickson said he hopes for at least a 60%
turnout
"The higher the turnout; it means the
more informed voters are," he said. "I'm
concerned there is going to be a low
voter turnout because the two candi-
dates running for governor are not very

Former Newport Beach CoWlcil-
woman Jan Debay said she expects a
higher turnout in Newpo.rt Beach than
in any other city.
"I think we'll have a better turnout
because of the Greenlight candidates,"
she said. "I'd guess we'd probably have
about 52%.1 think the faithful high-pro·
pensity voters will turn out It'll be a
close race."
State election officials have offered a
similar picture for Califorrlia Sec.retary
of State Bill Jones predicted last week
that only 58% of registered voters Will
cast a ballot this year. That is very close
to the' all-time lowest number, which
was 57.59% in the last gubernatorial
election, four years ago.
Officials said they based their esti-
mates on the unprecedented resources
that political parties are eiq>ending and
the number of absentee ballots that
have been requested.
Poli tical consultant Dave Ellis, who is
running several Newport Beach council
campaigns, said he doesn't expect the
turnout to be higher than the last gu-
bernatorial election.
"It's hard to gauge, but I think we're
going to be the same as we were four
years agq," he said.
Ellis also pointed out that California

shenanigans and mysterious voice
messages are turning out to be the last-
minute campaign strategies of choice
as the hours counted down to today's
election.
ln District 4, for example, a recorded
campaign message seemingly in the
voice of one candidate proves that
someone's not telling the truth.
The message asks voters to support
Ron Winship, claiming that he is a
Greenlight candidate and that he
helped defeat the Koll office expansion
in the last election.
Both claims are [alse, as Winship
readily confirms.

COSTA MESA -An 11th-hour political
a1tack against Mayor Unda Dixon was
launched Monday, as a pro-FJ Toro airport
group took to the phones to lobby against
her bid for reelection.
The Airport Working Group Political Ac-
tion Comminee, the formal political entity
of the organization created to limit the ex·
pansion of John Wayne Airport, sponsored
the last-minute anack on Dixon and
called an undetermined number of regis-
tered Costa Mesa voters to inform them
about her lack of support for an airport at
the former El Toro Marine Base.
When Dixon got news of the tactic
Monday evening. sh e said she was furious
with the group's strategy. calling it unwar-
ranted and unscrupulous.
"I have· always worked on behalf of
Costa Mesa residents to limit the expan-
sion of John Wayne Airport." she said,
adding that she has stood in front of the
county Board of Supervisors to ask that
-Costa Mesa be included in the TWA Settle-
ment Agreement, which outlines flight
and noise limitations. "I guess some peo-
ple have to stoop to such methods be-
cause they are intimidated by strong lead-
ership. H ~
Aaron Flders, a working group board
member who voiced the phone message
to voters, said Dixon did not adequately
protect Costa"Mesa residents against in-
creased Oights because she didn't support
an El Thro airport.

Now we have Ouis •Forged"
Steel, who has admitted to two
cases of knowledge of forgery, and
he walks off with a $1,000 slap on
the write fine. Why were two·
felonious acts of perjury and forgery
reduced to misdemeanors?
You would think. if you listen to
Steel. that he has feelings against
illegal people -that they should
not be in Costa Mesa or Orange
County or California or the United
States. Now SteeJ has Joined this
criminal element as they infest the
governments or this country.
This is the same man who has sat
for two years ln a council chair
drawing more than $7,000 a year,
plua all the perks, and we have been
subjected to this illegal person
representing the city of Costa Mesa.
This is a man, now on probation,
who still sits with the City Council.
One would hope that S1eel might
gracefully exit pubHc life and in
doing so could show some sign of
contrition.

City Atty. Jerry Scheer and Asst.
City Atty. Tom Wood are respected
long-term professionals in this legal

lmpeccable records for honesty.
Both have exemplified the finest in

The reputations of Sch eer and

troublesome because all of this

there was a girl named

Then there was Amanda's
best friend, named Lex.. Lex
and Amanda had been best
friends since sixth grade. Lex MICHAEL
despised Amanda secretly, but A. WALEK
openly she was chummy and
popular is good. Then why do
both feel so painful? I can't
tell you how many people I
know who have considered
played the role of considerate girl to
kiss up to the world around her.
Amanda one day gathered up
enough bravado to ao;k Hensley out to
dinner. She told Lex that she was going
to ask him at the end of the day. At
lunch Lex asked Hensley out to dinner
on Friday night.
It seems to me that every time l
make a new friend, I deem them
normal, cool, one of the few who is not
crazy. and then a few weeks later I find
out that they like to rip the heads off
stuffed animals every night.
Why is it that everyone seems to be
going nuts? Are we a society built of
dysfunction, that now all the popular
things to do -drugs, divorce and
cheating -have become part of the
accepted rites o f our culture? Do we all
accep1 1aboo things of the past
withou1 remembering why those bars
were put there anyway?
Society has all been destroyed by the
microwave mentality. The American
belief that you can get anything
tangible in Jess than three minutes.
The art of movies and paintings is
severely unappreciated. That real
movies go unnoticed while sequels are
made of every movie and novel o n the

Lex became famous for her
friend-hopping situations. She was
notorious, but like In a relationship,

can it be? Pretty hard.
I sat with my friends sipping on

to piclc on a boy, whom we all had
never met, sitting at a table by himself.
We sat there mocking this boy because
unlike us. he was not surrounded by
tons of people who lied to you
changing schools or even hurting
themselves because of what their
so-called friends have done to them.
Why can't we all just be content?
Would we all be happy if we were left
alone? Maybe it is better to be alone
than to be a fraud.
High school is those trlclcy years
when teenagers have more on their
backs than a Tibetan Sherpa; slowly
we are becoming more and more
independent from our families and
relying on what we believe to be are
our friends.
I have had friends who one day
decided they hated me, friends who
said after 12 years or knowing each
other that they never liked me. All that
time I was fooled, like some character
in an action movie who learns his
partner is really a double agent. My
friends had played me, waiting for tha1
next better friend to come along, while
I, the fool, was happy just being their
friend. Was I the naJ've one because I
didn't play these difficult mind games
with people? Was J not doing what
everyone else was doing: using
people's em otions like pieces on a
checker board? Was I really the
problem? After a while, if everyone is
doing ii, does it become acceptable?
I sat there staring at this poor boy
hoping that he was waiting for a group
of his friends to come and make all of
us wrong, but they never came.
I sat there and realized I was lucky.
Sure, everyone around me was not
true. Were they all going to be there for
me in a time of need? No. But I knew
that out of all these people. I was lucky
to have the few gems that pop up.
If you can survive on your own. out
there in the world alone, then I praise
you. But, I can't. Having someone to
share it with is ever so much better. lf
you have one true friend, then you
have succeeded. Maybe it is your
mom, dad, teddy bear or sister. As long
as you have someone there that is tha1
rock that you can lean on, then you
are fine, and in the end no matter how
bad someone was to you, and no
matter how much you thought you got
hurt. someday it will go away. and
someday you will get the best revenge
on them: you just won't care. This is
just one man's opinion.
