of the.4 Newport Beach City Council races. Nichols

Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BF.ACH -Team New-
port took a solid lead ln early vote
counts with three of its four candi·
dates ahead of their Greenlight and In-
dependent challengers.
The only deviation came in the Dis·
trlct 6 race, where Greenlighter Dick
Nichols was eking out a narrow lead
over Bernie Svalstad as results were
still being counted near midnight.
With half the precincts reporting.
Nichols had 4,786 votes, or 46%, to
Svalstad 's 4,546. or 43%, and Laura
Dietz's l.162, or 11%.
It was a very dHferent story in Dis-
trict I, where Mayor Tod Ridgeway led
comfortably with 58% of the vote.
Ml'm a happy camper," said Mayor
Tod Ridgeway. who, as he had in the
last campaign, eschewed the election
night parties to bake chocolate chip
cookies with the kids. With half the
precincts reponing. Ridgeway had
6,285 votes, Greenligh1 candidate
Madelene Arakelian had 3,391 votes
and Marianne Zippi trailed with 1,199
voles, about 12%.
former Public Work.s Director Don
Webb started out with a strong lead
over GreenJight author Allan Beek.
Webb's 5,896 votes for the District 3
seat rep resented 55% of the vote. Beek
trailed with 4,790 vot~. or 45%.
"I'm very happy to hear those re·
suits,· Webb said, adding that he felt
vindicated in hh commitment to run·
ning a clean campaign. "From the very
beginning I said, "lbat's how I'm going
to run my campaign: I'm going 10 be
as positive as I can be. No name call
ing.'"

PREPS
Cutting

Vandalism is becoming a
regrettable factor in the
sports rivalry between the
Eagles and Mustangs.
A little good natured ribbing is
expected, even healthy. But
acts of vandalism at F.stancia
High Oct. 27, just days after
Costa Mesa defeated the crosstown
rjval Eagles In the Battle for the Bell
football game, add to a continuing
trend of Improper conduct that is
becoming the norm following rivalry
games between the two schools in
several sports.
F.stancia Principal
Tom Antal and
Eagles football coach
Jay Noonan said
paint balls
containing green
paint were deposited
on a wall and a door
that feature
paintings of the
Eagle mascot on the
BARRY P11tancia campus. Noonan aJs6 said FAULKNER the familiar rib
bones, representing
remnants of the postgame feast at a
local rib restaur.mt that goes to the
annual series7game winner between
F.stancia and Costa Mesa. were also
dumped on F.stancia athletic fields,
which where also strewn with other
debris.
Last season, rib bones were scattered
on the front lawn and doo r of an
E.~tancia boys basketball player after
C'.osta Mesa clinched the perpetual Rell
trophy awarded the annual series
winner.
Similar acts have preVJously been
reported after contests m baseball and
girls basketball and ooth schools have
been victimized.
Despite increasing efforts of school
and athletic administrators to curtail
these activities. including pregame
lectures and even posting security
personnel on the losing school's
campus -for appreximately J6 hours
after the Oct. 25 football game ended -
vandalism conUnues with alarming
repetition.
School officials even took steps to
prevent any rib bones from leaving the
restaurant after the most tecent
celebratory 1neal, tJ1ough Antal
acknowledged vandals may have later
retrieved bones from the trash.
Antal said the severity of the recenl
damage was incidental. He reported the
incident to Costa Mesa Principal Fred
Navarro, who said he is looking into the
matter.
•••
Not all postgame "messages" have
been excessive.
Antal said after the Eagles baseball
team lost Its three-game series to Costa
Mesa taSt spring. white plastic bibs
(presumably used by the Mustangs at
the rib feast) were found the next
morning tied to the Estancia baseball
field's backstop.
This, Antal said, was a statement
within the bounds of good taste.

NEWPORT BEACH -This was a
team that lost its first Sea View League
match at home to Alis.o Niguel. This was
a team that uailed 2·0 in games at Aliso,
and had to dig deep to win. On Tuesday,
this was a team, the Newport Harbor
High girls volleyball squad, that trailed
7-1 in Game I. but came back to sweep
visiting Woodbridge. 15-12, 15·7, 15·10,
as the Sailors grabbed first place in the
Sea View League.
"We are a team that stays in it and
never quits," Newport junior Alyson
Jennings said of the Sailors (20·6, 8· l in
league). "We always put up a
fight and we won't give up.
We started out slowly (Tues-

went down, 3·0, Glenn stopped the ac·

Nt.-wport trailed, 6· l .
Woodbridge (8-7, 7-2) increased its
lead to 7-1, after a Newport net viola-
tion, but that's when the Sailors
mounted their comeback. Newport

down the stretch. Jennings
delivered one of her match-
high six aces. after her too-hot-to-han-

lead. Then, the Warriors committed an
error, mainly because of Jennings' serve
to close out the game.
Jennings finished with eight kills.
while Pepperdine-bound senior Kristin
