customers who have recently bought

He derives about a third of his

He also sells much of the

As the exclusive Orange County

His average table sells for $3,000 to

Even though many of his tables sell
as luxury items, Fiscella says he still
tries to give his customers a lot of
bang for their buck.
"We like to give people good value.·
Fiscella said. "We have to service the
community. We're here to bring a little
joy and fun into people's Lives. -

tree· trimming scandal
One resident reported to her
polling place on Tuesday, a
private home on Poppy Avenue
in Corona del Mar, and found
she couldn't get inside to vote.
The reason: Oty tree-cutting
crews were trimming the
eucalyptus trees rtgbt in front of
the polling place.
The voter called Oty Hall. Her
pleas of, "Cmon guys. any day
but today," seemed to evoke
some action. The tree-trimmers

His mother was actress

who oheo performs now in
Nevada. •I was worried
about my voice ... I had
vocalized all day, and by the
time the shO'N came, I had
no voice.~
Despite his fears, Jones
found him.self ta.ken with
the stage. He decided to
give singing a try and
worked odd jobs -
including a stint as"a gas

support himself. Jon~
eventually signed with
Capitol Records, recording
an album with them before
leaving. He was later signed
by Kapp Records.
"It's just downright

TENNIS
Spi.~ing it up
at Costa Mesa
Tennis Center
Public facility to host its
second USTA Futures
event of the year this we~k.
F or true international ·
competition, tennis is way
ahead of the game. While
baseball and basketball abd
other sports attempt to stretch the
worldwide scouting. recruiting and
developmental boundaries, it's a
reversal of fortune in tennis.
Here, we're the minority. In many
other countries, tennis ranks second
only to soccer in popularity and ..
participation.
But that doesn't stop Costa Mesa
Tennis Center operator Hanle Uoyd
from rolling out the red carpet for a
grass-roots United States Tennis
Association event, the second annual
$15,000 Costa Mesa Pro Oassic on the
mens Futures circuit
Lloyd, in fact, welcomes the

Americans. Others
are from places like

France, South Africa,
Croatia and
Yugoslavia There are
guys from Argentina.
Sweden,
Czechoslovalcia,
Denmark. Brazil and the Netherlands.
If these guys could cook. we could
have quite an international UTaste of'
event at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
While about 350 Futures events are
played worldwide throughout the year,
only 33 this year will be played in the
U.S .. where the game of tennis
skyrocketed in the 1970s but has yet to
experience another boom -and some
question whether it ever will again.
But with people like Lloyd embracing
the minor leagues of tennis, promoting
the use of public courts and
encouraging folks to pick up a racket,
the spon will survive and, perhaps in
some cases, thrive.
The top-ranked player in the Costa
Mesa Pro, Japan's Yeu-Thuoo Wang. is
2 J 7th in the world, followed by
Germany's Christopher Kas at 225 and
the U.S.'s Doug Bohaboy at 293.
lt is the second USTA Futures event
hosted by Costa Mesa this year,
following the $I 0,000 Diadora Pro
Cllampionshlps in September. Both are
examples of Lloyd's diligent effort to
provic;le the community with a chance
to see quality tennis for free.

CORONA DEL
MAR -The Co-

High football
team was sub-
merged Friday
night under a
combination of
physical prowess displayed by visiting
Northwood and game-long downpour
seldom seen in Southern California.
The result was a 2 J -0 loss in the ba1Ue
for Pacific Coast League supremacy th.at
ensured the Sea Kings will be no better
than the league's No. 2 representative in
the CIF Southern Section Division IX
Playoffs.
But unlike a 17-0 setback to Back Bay
rival Newport Harbor in Week 3, which
was followed by a three-game losing
streak. CdM Coach Dick Freeman be-
lieves his players can recover more
quickly from the blow to their confi-
dence delivered by the Tunberwotves.
Ml don't think (Friday's loss, in which
the Sea Klngs lost five of their 11 fum-
bles and also had one pass intercepted)
completely took the wind out of our
sails," Freeman said. "It was just about
the opposite of our game the week be-
fore against Calvary Olapel ca 50-8 win).
Against Calvary, everything went right
for us. But against Northwood, it
seemed lilce we couldn't get a break.
"We bobble a pass back to one of
their defenders (a lost fumble after a 36-
yard reception), that could bave been a
touchdown and we had another re-
ceiver just barely tripped up (after an-
other 36-yard bomb) that could have
been another score. If we have our guy
pick up a fumble (in the University
backfield), instead of fall on It, tha~s an-
other score and we didn't score at the
end after getting to their 1-yard line.

thing else being different tn the game,
