which included reduced bows of

GARDEN
Continued from Al
for a service project as his
garden was materializing,
"They were a godsend," Royer
said of the 60 men who
volunteered. MThey were angels.
They put in the fence, cleared
some of the remaining brush,
laid all the railroad ties and
drilled holes. ..
The garden was finally ready
to go public a month ago. While
it was under construction, Royer
diligently contacted schools
throughout Orange County. But
so Car. be has only gotten nibbles
of interest as he waits for the
schools' administrative
processes to chum.
"All these great people have
been involved with donating."
Royer said. "I would like to see it
being used."
Only an Eagle Scout project
has taken advantage of the
garden, building a potting shed
in the far .corner.
Although the YMCA hosts
after-school programs In Santa
Ana. Costa Mesa and Tustin,
getting those kids to the garden
would only be possible a few
times a year because of the
limited transportation budget,
said Stacy Sanchez. community
programs director.
Despite the lack of visitors,
Royer already has plans to
expand the garden -grow
blackberry. blueberry and
raspberry plants and add an
overhang trellis.
Sanchez said she admires
Royer's tenacity in talcing the
garden from a seedling of a
thought to frujtion.
M Bruce has been very driven in
the whole process of starting
(the garden) and getting
members involved," Sanche-z
said. "Without him, It wouldn't
have happened .... We're
fortunate to have members like
him."

garden, call Royer at (714)

A Great Park boondoggle closer to home
C osta Mesa has it's own $10-milllon
Great Padt -Fairview Palk. On
Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m., our City
Council will review the J)roject plans for
this part. I have' discovered by attending
a variety of meetings that this1noject is
out of control and is belng shaped by
some people who do not even live ln our
city.
Back in 1985. the city bought Fairview
Park to prevent it from belng
over-developed. to maintain a
passive-use pad so there would be
minimal impact to the adjacent Talbert
Preserve. Well, over-development is
exactly what the current City Council is
planning to do.
Since 1985, the county has spent
' millions of dollars returning the Talbert
Preserve to its natural st.ate. It is one of
the few remaining CaJjfomfa coastal
planes.
We are quite good at running
developers through various studies; we
seem to overloak the same for the
council's favorite projecL I recentJy
attended a Parks and Recreation
Commission meeting and endured
listening to people talk about how model
glider planes were scaring the birds.
What seems to be avoided is how many
human visitors to a preserve are too
manY? ·
How many users are appropriate for a
passive park. which is next to a preserve?
How do we prevent !Urning the preserve
into another ·homeless jungle" like the
section of park that is just south of
Victoria?
The problems of Costa Mesa's "great
park" are best symbolized by the failed
move of the Huscroft House 10 the park.
because most consider it a rotting
eyesore of no historic value.
Unfortunately, our problems only start
here. Due to the sensitive nature of
vernal pools. the state Department of

Leandra Aguilar sits in her makeshift home in Talbert Park in 1999.
Fish and Grune may restrict when the
Ughts at a new stadium at the local high
school may be turned on. This is when
we found out that Fish and Game has
not approved the current plans for the
park. The dog park may requir:e the
removal of plants that could be hannful
to the dogs. Again, we do not have
apprOYdls to remove plants from this
sensitive area. BMX bike riders will no
longer be permitted, but when it is was
pointed out that the county allows BMX
riders, we decided to change our mind,
My favorite is the 60-car lot in the
lower portion of the park. I personally
believe this could have the greatest
negative effect on the Talbert Preserve.
The excuses for the car lot range from
providing better coastal access to
disabled access to the restroom in Talbert
Park. Ooser inspection shows that the lot
will not be set up to be used by people
that live north of the park. and the whole
Americans with Disabilities Act excuse is
highly suspect It is unclear whether the
city will provide the proper slope for
wheelchairs to get to this restroom,
whkh is three footbalJ fields away.
By the way. the county does not
provide wheelchair paths to the restroom
once you get to county property. '11le
hidden reason maybe the county is
loolclng for an access route for horses
and their horse trailers. I find it very '-
ill-conceived to have a large parlclng lot
with no associated restroom facilitjes.
Some things were never meant to be
developed. and I hope the City Council
will see the errors of its ways and leave
Fairview Park alone. I have lived in Mesa
Verde for almost 20 years; maybe. the city
leaders could focus their efforts on why
we never been able to landscape Adams
Avenue.

~thentic Italian cuisine since 1978
Since they opened the Costa Mesa Pizza D'Oro
in 1978, Nick and Mary DiPietro have strived
to bring their customers authentic Italian cuisine
in large quantities at incredibly low prices.
expected. Their Giant Slices are cut from their 30
inch Party Pizza, which they claim is the biggNt
in O range County. On their All-You-Can-Eat
nights, customers can stuff themselves silly with
spaghetti ancVor lasagna for prices ranging from
SJ.25 to S4.25. Customers can also IA!ke
advantage of their dozens of lunch specials thdt
range from SJ .50 to S4.q5.
Pizza D'Oro is a classic example of the traditional
Mom and Pop restaurant competing with and
surpassing the cold, corporate chain restaurants.
All of their pizzas are baked on a stone-brick oven
and hand-tossed so they are always bigger than In addition to pizza and pastas, Pizza D'Oro

About an hour's drive south of San Diego a long
the Baja Mexico coast, lies what was once a
small fishing village called Puerto Nuevo.
For many years, tourists have flocked to the local
fishermen's houses to eat local Pilcific lobsters,
wrapped in wann flour torti llas along with charro
beans, Mexican rice and a hot red chili sauce.
Butter was a rarity in the early days and it was
advisable to bring your own. Of course icy cold
Mexican beers and Margaritas were used to "wash
it all down."
If one were to visit Puerto Nuevo some 35 years
later, they would no longer see a sleepy little
fishing village with shanty houses, but rather
multi-mi llion doHar commercial buildings and no
fewer than 30 fishermen's homes all serving their
famous Puerto Nuevo lobster dinners. It was
during the early '60s that my family and I first
became familiar with the Puerto Nuevo lobsters. In
the late '70s after perhaps a hundred trips to
"Lobster Land" we became convinced that a
similar type food could be introduced in the states.
In the summer of 1983 we introduced the Puerto
Nuevo-style lobster dinner to the United States.
Then in 1985, we converted the menu and decor
at The O ld Bonita Store into that of a Puerto
Nuevo lobster house serving Baja-style lobster as
