COSTA MESA PLANNING COMMISSION PREVIEW
ON THE
AGENDA
Here are some of lhe items the
commission will consider tonight
MULTI PURPOSE TRAIL
The rornmission will consider iJ there

proposed multipurpose trail in Fairview
Park. 111e council approved the concept
for the trail when ii adoplt.>d the Fairview
P'ark Master Plan. The trail would be used
by pedt.'Strians, bicyclists and school
teams.
Biologists hired by the city found 1ha1
the operation of the trail would not cause
any significant effects to the environment.
Rut they recommend that short·tt'nn
construction activitie~ he mi1iga1ed so the

'WHAT TO EXPECT
No harm, no foul . Since the tr.iii will

II never mattered what film

California 'Jlleater had only one
screen at the time, and wharever

parents rarely bothered to tead
the reviews; the only advance

films came from the occasional
word of mouth. This led to a lot

years.

ANTHONY
CURCI
Volleyball
A slow start at UCLA sparked a fire that led to
him captaining Bruins' 1989 national champs.
Steve Vlrcen
Daily Piiot
T here was a m oment
when Anthony Curci
wanted to transfer from
UCLA because he did
not feel he fit into the plans of
the Bruins' men's voUeyball
team.
But that was just a moment.
For the most part. Curci. a
volleyball standout from
Newpon Beach. became
motiv-clted and wahted
to fuJfi1J his potential.
He wanted lo do all he
could to prove to
Coach Al Scates that he
could be depended
u pon.
"I spent the first few
years frustrated,'' Curci
said of his tim e at
UCl.A. "There was a lot
of talent in front of m e
Newpon Beach and his brother,
Mi.Ice, and sister, Sienna, played
at Newport Harbor High. ......._
"Olarlie was a very principled
coach," Curci said of the coach
who is now the head man for
the UC lrvine women's volleyball
team. "Many of the things he
taught me stuck. with me. He
really provided me With good
principles."
For his high school education,
Curci went to Cate, a boarding
school in Carpenteria. which
had about 220 students
at the time. He
competed in lacrosse.
soccer and volleyball.
The volleyball team dJd
not win many matches,
just one in Curci's
senior year. But Curci
still stood o ut. so much
so that he earned a
scholarship to play for
UCLA and Scates.
and I even thought of Anthony Curci "It was a situation
transferring at one
point. But a guy named Marlc.
Slevcove convinced me I needed
to stick it out."
Curci started playing at UCLA
in 1985. He was a redshln his
sophomore year and played
sparingly when he came back.
That's when Slevcove, a former
Bruins' player and standout
from Orange County. gave Curci
a pep talk.
Curci earned a Slarting
position in 1988, then in 1989.
he was captain of the l!CLA
team lhat won Lhe NCAA
championship. He entered
UCIA as a ·etter. but in 1989, he
played opposite and helped lead
the Bruin defeat Stanford.
which featured former
Olympian Scou Fonune, in the
title matd1.
where he expects to
win, so whoever shows up that
night gets to play." Curci said.
"It's a pretty cutthroat system.
You make a few errors and
you're done. He's going to win
because he has a lot of talent. If
one of his players goes into the
tank, he h as enough talenr 10 go
on."
After UCLA. Curci played
beach volleyball on the AVP Tour
for four years. He said he
realized it is difficult 10 retire
financially as a pro volleyball
player and he eventually
stopped playing.
While at UCLA, Curci earned
undergraduate degrees in
psychology and busines.~. He
gained his master's degree in
psychology and an MBA in
finance at Pepperdine.
Sleepless
Nights?
The Bruin!. also won the
national chompionship in 1987,
when Curci WJS a redshin
sophomore.
"You get committed'." Curd
said. explaining his
improvement at UCLA. "You gel
to a point where you are just
committed. You spend five or six
hours a day. just working a l it.
When you win. it makes it all
wonh it. It was a great ending."
Now. he is a consultant at a
private equity investing ftrm. He
continues to play volleyball fo r
recreation.
"The competitiveness is still
there," he said. "Especially when
I play USC guys around town."
Curci, the latest honoree of
the Daily Pilot Spon s Hall of
Fame. liyes in Newpon Beach
with his wife. Erin, and their
daughter, Eva, who will be 4 next
m onth. They are expecting a
new addition 10 the family. as
Erin is pregnant and due in
