I t seemed like such a simple
idea
Pick up extra food from
grocery stores that would
normally be discarded and deliver
it to social service agencies.
Corona del Mar High School senior Jo e
Klunder created an organization that
takes grocery store leftovers to seniors
Beach grocery store throw away a
lot of fresh food at the end of the
day. Based on his previous
volunteer experience woding in
soup kitchens, he said he noticed
that that there's not always enough
healthy food to give out
But when Corona del Mar High
School senior Joe Klunder first
broached this idea to the
management or a Newport Beach
grocery store. he was immediately
thwarted.
•1 called the manager ... and he
hung up on me,· Klunder said.
But the 17-year-old was
undeterred.
Through legal research,
cold-calling and perseverance,
Klunder transformed his kernel of
an Idea into the Youth Communiry
Organization Serving Others,
which delivers food and dothing
to various social service agencies
in the Newport-Mesa area.
On Thanksgiving. Klunder
delivered a shopping cart worth of
bread from Pavilions in Newpon
Beach to the Senior Center in
Costa Mesa Bill Mill . the center's
donation coordinator expressed
his appreciation for)Ounder's
spirit of generosiry.
"He's great -he's a blessing
here," Mills said.
Klunder was inspired 10 act two
years ago when he saw a Newpon

Goelman admits she borrowed the
Idea from the popular Toys for Tots gift
drive. But she is unashamed.
"Bverybody needs a gift: Goelman
said •Tuey had the idea and we are ex-
panding on it·
The senior center is looking for
moderately priced. unwrapped gifts
that are not gender specific. Goelman
said. Examples include classic movies.
stationery, puzzles, games and blan-
kets. F.ach gift will be wrapped and
handed out at the center's annual holi-
day party. she said.

music and holiday cheer -all while
cruising around the harbor.
The event, put up by the Balboa
Merchant and Owner Assn., is the
annual fund-raiser for the group.
The ambience is "fun and festive,"
said Peggy Fort, marketing consultant
for the Balboa Village businesses.
"It's a great mix of residents and local

"It's a great way lo enjoy the lights on
the harbor and is a good preceding
event before the boat parade," Fort said.
The event is also a nicre opportunity
for the merchants to gel together with
the community to start the holidays,
said Bob Black, one of the owners of the
Catalina Ayer. For several years now,
Black has donated the boat fo r the event
-proceeds of which benefit Balboa
businesses.
The event will.begin at 6 p.m. The
cruise itself will start at about 7 p.m.

Emerson Good Samaritan Food
Donation Act or 1996, which
protects donors from liability
when donating to a nonprofit
organization.
Buoyed by his find, Klunder
then contacted Denise Weiland,
Corona del Mar High School's
community service program
speciallst. who provided him
with some referrals. IClunder
spent the next year soliciting
donations &om grocery and
retail stores.
His first delivery happened
early this year when be picked

counts 10 stores and one
individual as donors. Klunder
and his network of good
Samaritans donate the bounty
directly to four social service
agencies. Sometimes those
organizations then donate their
ezcess portions to other
agencies as Klunder's goodwill
gestures ripple throughout the
community.
His netwodc lncludes 18
students at Corona del Mar High
School who help with the
organization and earn
community service credit for
doing so. His right-hand-man Is
senior PatrlckAheam, 17, the
orpnlzation's assistant di.rector.
