Rabbi Reuven Mintz of Chabad Jewish Center lights a menorah made of ice to signify the start of Hanukkah Friday afternoon at Fashion Island.
Lighting of the ice
Carved frozen menorah brings something new
to Hanukkah celebration at Fashion Island.

It wasn't quite snowing in Fash-
ion Island. But it was probably the
closest kids in Newport Beach
could get to 350 pounds of ice.
OiUdren and adults a.like
watched wide-eyed as a man
carved out a 7-foot menorah from
three giant blocks of ice. LlnJe boys
and girls jumped around the carv-
ing in progress and caught ice
chips as they flew off the block.
The fun and excitement was
part of the annual Hanukkah cele-
bration at Fash.ion lsland on Fri-
day, put together by the Olabad
Jewish Center. More than I 00 peo-
ple packed the area in front of
Bloomingdale's, munching dough-
nuts and spending time with
family and friends. lllting Hanuk-
kah melodies from a violin, clari-
net and accordion trio wove a
backdrop for the sculpture.
The menorah, once carved, was
lighted by Newport Beach Mayor
Tod Ridgeway.
This is the first time Olabad has
tried to create an ice menorah,
Rabbi Reuven Mintz said.
"Every year, we try to do some-
thing different and interesnng. • he
said. "We just thought this may be
something mnovauve and creative
and something that wouJd add to
the significance of this joyous holi·
day."
Hanukkah began at dusk Friday.

spawned hits "Whenever J Call

which earned him a Grammy
for Best Pop Vocal.
Several of Loggins' most
popular songs, which are still
his calling cards today, came
off 1980s' soundtracb, starting
with "I'm Alright" from the
movie "Caddyshack."
Loggins said he came into
soundtrack work by "luck." A
friend or his called him up and
told him "Caddyshad"
executive producer Jon Peters
was looking for someone to
write and sing original songs
for the film. He then saw the
movie, 1oved It and wrote the
opening song. "I'm Alright."
For "Footloose," the song for
which he is best known and
that mo~t energizes him on
stage, Loggins actually read the
screenplay and then wrote the
song before filming ~. he
