Run-off election would undo
damage of phone message
Re: "Consultant cops to phony phone
message," Nov. 21.
It seems as though we'Ve had more than
our share of questionable election and
campaign procedures over the last couple
of years In Newport ~ch. Whether the
actions o'f campaign consultant Dave Ellis,
hired by Councilman Gary Adams,
affected the outcome of the election ls
impossible to prove and immaterial. The
real issue is that these tactics ca.st doubts
about the integrity of Adams and the
entire process.
Ellis' argument that they placed the
"message in the queue with the
instructions to the vendor not to execute
it" is a typical political ploy to divert
blame. lf it weren't intended for use, it
should never have been in a position to be
used. And, because Adams hired Ellis,
Adams is ultimately responsible.
I suggest that either we have a run-off
election between Adams and Ri ch Taylor.
or that Adams step down.

Sleazy campaign practices

Good for ruck. Taylor. Finally, som eone
cares enough to challenge deceptive .
campaign tactics by taking the time for
some investigative work.. Now, le t's hope
our governm ent follows up, that the
guilry people will suffer consequences
and an example might be set for future
elections.
Campaign consultant Dave Ellis lied at
lea'it twice when he denied any
involvement in the telephone calling
scheme intended to garner m ore votes
for Councilman Gary Adams, his client.
Then, when p resented with proof, he
changed his story and admitted he
designed lhe false message, bu1 didn't
authorize it 10 be sent. How n a'ive does
he think we are?
Sleazy campaign practices like thi.,
must be stopped. It undermine'> our

My father a nd mother unexpectedly

farmed in the Midwest, and while
financially com fortable, they certainly
would not be considered rich. They
made personal financial sacrifices in
order to keep the land, wanting to pass it
on to my sons. who were interested in
farming. What a shock to learn that the
Death Tax was so high we could not pay
it and stlU keep the property.
Even i~ my parents would have been
wealthy, they bought that land, faithfully
paid taxes on it and kept it for their
heirs. The government was m orally

My fa mily is far from wealthy.
I lowever, three brothers (one of which i) -.,

If on e brother should unexpectedly

PREPS
A classic for the ages
They 1992 Battle of
the Bay II conjures
more than a few
memories.
T oday marks the 10-year
anniversary of the 1992
CIF Southern Section
Division IV semifinal
football game between Newport
Harbor High and Corona del
Mar, a clash also known in
Newport-Mesa lore as the Bartle
of the Bayn.
BARRY
FAULKNER
Though the
parade of
years
sometimes
blend
together, and
games, plays
and players
consolidate
into the far
reaches of my
mind's eye.
there are
definite
memories I
hold, not only about the game,
but the week leading up to it.
The prelude, which included
more than a dozen slories and
enough phone interviews to
initiate permanent ear cartila,ge
damage, brings to mind a piece
constructed from the thoughts
of a local psychic, to whom I
pald an awtcward personal visit
The story has mysteriously
disappeared from the Daily Pilot
archives, however. and I can't
seem to recall which team the
swami selected.
Regarding the game. I recall a
swprisingty scant few images,
one of which being the overflow
crowd, most likely
underestimated at 5,400. I do
recall the winning touchdown,
scored by Wade Tift. who dashed
30 yards up the middle with 53
seconds left to break a 21-21 lie.
The mosl crys1aJ clear menial
picture, however. is a seemingly
slow-motion sequence In which
Newport Harbor OUISide
linebacker Justin Ketcham
collided with aJ.rbome CdM
running back Tom Hess,
resulting in a fumble along the
southern (home) sideline at the
Sea Kings' 42·yard line. The ball
bounced ahead of the pile
created by the tackle and
appeared to come to rest jusr
inside the boundary. It seemed
like seconds passed as blue
(Newport) and white (CdM)
jerseys gave chase, before
Newport comerbadc Chris
E!.dwatds. crawling on his hands
and knees. finally pounced on
the loose balJ to set up the
winning touchdown.
ll was billed as the greatesl
game in the then-62-year history
of the Newport p rogram. The
Sailors have gone on to win a
pair of section championships,
including a l 4·0 season in 1994,
matching the two CIF titles CdM
captured in back-10-back
seasons 0988-89). But, for sheer
hype. atmosphere and
anti~pation, there has been no
game before or slnce that
matched Newport-Mesa schools
with so much at stake. It was
and is. truly. a game to
remember.

Newport Harbor High boys
basketball coach Laay Hirst and
Sage Hill bead man Steve ICeitb
have both been practicing their
craft for more than two decades.
Yet, this season, separate
circumstances have forced them
lo taJce notice of just how
complex the coaching process
can be.
Hirst's epiphany came with
the arrival of Torrey Pines
1ransfers Brett and Todd
Lowenthal, who joined the
program mere days before the
first official practice
"When you have lcids starting
from ground uro, it makes you
realize how much the other kids
have already had to leam," Hirst
said. ·All of a sudden. you realize
how much you've put in a little
bit al a time. As a coach, you
always th.ink you're behind,
behind behind, But, getting the
two new kids, it has been
unbefievable to realize how far
behind their teammates they
are:
Keith, in his first season at
Sage Hill after successful
previous tenures at Glendale
and Irvine. has had to work from
beMnd after getting the job
weeks before school ended last
June.
"The biggest adjustment for
me has been the timeline," Keith
said. "When you basically have
no spring and summer and you
start Nov. 16, everything seems
speeded up in terms of the
learning curve.·
