AT A GLANCE
ON THE WEB:
www.dalyplbt.com I t was the low-carb nachos and beer
that did It.
I had been fruitlessly searching
the wine aisle of my favorite special ty
score for a particular brand of red wine
when I finally realized the label had
been removed from the shelves. In its
place were mw after row of low-carb
nacho tonilla chips and low-carb lager
beer. I'm stlU not sure lf It was the loss
of my favorite wine or the thought of
some glutton trying to snadc and boo7,e
his way to fttnese that made me snap,
but suddenly I h.d had enough.
•Oh. give me a break." I saJd to my
girlfriend, Sharon. "When you think of

wouldn't it be easier
to simply nol drink a
few six-packs?"
"Oh. no," Sharon
replied. "It's a lot
easier to take the
carbs out of the
beer."
RJght here Is where
I should have
shrugged resignedly
and moved on to the
canned foods aisle.
But I couldn't. I just
couldn't let go of the fact that the
low-carb crue was starting to affect my
quality of life directly.
"Do vou reali7.e that in tJ1e half-hour
we've been here, we've seen low-cam
pizza. low-carb French fries, low-carh
waffles and low-carb
chocolate·chocolate-chip brownies?" I
exclaimed. "For God's sake, they even
have low-carb chill verrkburritos! I'm
sorry, but If you want to lose weight,
maybe you should stop eating so many
burritos!"
Sharon jw1t smiled. knowing that
anything she said would just add more
fuel to the ftre. And to her credit. she
politely resisted the wse to point out
the obvious, which was that I was
clearly a man who had a hard lime
pas.•lng up a good burrito.
I knew that I was oversimplifying the
seductive power of junk food to the
point or absurdity. But this wa'l
so.rnelhing that had bet'n building.
Over the past two or three years, I'd
watched with growing dismay as the
low-carbohydrate crv,e swept the
country. II seemed that every time I
turned around, another shelf of
precious store space was switching over
to foods I wouldn't touch if I were
snowbound in the Siem.
And then the restaurants starting

an object. I lie.
l1iat said, here's a quick
qui?.: Do you 1ell the dog, "go
lay down" or "go lie down"?
If you're not sure or you
answered "lay," that's
because my explanation
above wasn't very good.
'Ille dog is the subject of
the sentence. Even in an
imperative sen tence, an
order, the dog is srill the one
performing the action. So,
"go lie down" is correct. If
you were telling the dog to
return your pork chop to 1hc
kitchen table, you might say,
"Lay it down." 111at would
be correct in 1hat case
because the dog is the
subject and it is laying down
an object: the pork chop.
That's the easy part. It's
easy to get confused in the
past tense. That's because
the past tense of "to lie"
happens to be "lay."
I know, I know. ·111at
stinks. Rut stay with me and
l'U keep it simple.
Today. I lie on the b'llrney.
(They don't foed us very well
So, to recap. here's the
correct use of for uto lie":
'!Oday, I lie. Yesterday. I lay.
for "to lay": Today. I lay
the book on the table.
Yesterday, I laid the book on
the table.
Compound past tenses
add another thin layer of
trickiness: The past
participle of "lie" is
"lain." While the past
participle of "lay" is just
like its past tense, "laid."
In nongrammar
gobbled ygook, thal
m eans you would say, "I
have lain on the gurney
m an y limes" and "I have
laid down this book many
times.
I explained this to the
reporter who had written the
story about the police. He
said he still didn't
unden;tand why he had
heen wrong. '"lne polke told
the suspects to lay ... " is
the pasl tense.
I used these examples to
explain:
It's, "I wanted to drive,"
not, "I wanted to drove." It's
"I liked to think." Not, "I
liked to thought."
These are all compound
tenses that add a conjugated
verb to an infinitive. "I told"
is past tense. You combine it
with an infinitive in these
more complex cases. and the
infinitive never changes: "to
walk," "to think," "to drive,"
"IO lie."
Th e reporter still didn't get
it. (Please note that this
reporter is now a staff writer
al the Los Angeles Times and
I'm still schlepping City
CounciJ stories for the
community news division.)
I lad this been a ba1tJe1 I
could say that I then laid
down my arms and lay down
to die.

ON THE AGENDA
Here are some of the i!.suc~
the commission will consitler.
LAW FOR CAR SALES
LOTS
The commission will consider
an ordinance establishing
special zoning regulations for
car sales lots. The proposed
ordinance involves changes to
requirements for land~caped
areas next to outdoor vehide
display areas m1d an allowance
for businesl>eS to inMall certain
types of banners without having
to get approval of a planned
signage program.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Planning staff member~
believe these new regulation~
take into account the unique
operating qualities of the car
sales businesses while
maintaining the city's intent 10
improve and enhance
streetscapes with landscaping
and signage control.
PLANNING
APPLICATION
The commission will consider
an application from Farhad
Khosravi. who owns the
property al 258 Santa Isabel Ave.
Khosravi wants to revise his
plans for the project. which has
already been approved. The
original project called for
demolishing five one-:.tory
residences and building four
1wo-story. single-family houses.
Khosravi wants to change the
plans by increasing the
sei:und-lloor area for two of 1he
unit~.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There shouldn't be any
obi.taclcs, as planning staff
members feel the revisions will
he "compatible and
harmonious" with the
neighborhood.
BANNERS ON ATHLETIC
FIELDS
The commission will consider
changing the city code to allow
banners to be displayed on
athletic fields so community
organizations, like AYSO, can
sponsor and support youth
sports. The change being
proposed would put athletic
fields under the current
sign-banner regulations. Athletic

NICKLAUS
Continued from A5
but missed downhill birdie
attempt from two feet on 18
as the large gallery moaned.
Returning to Newpon
Beach for the 2005 Toshiba
Senior Oaaalc Is way too fu
In advance for Nicklaus to
commit, but the lure of the
golf course at Newport Beach
(at 6,584 yarda. it'• the short·
est on the Champions Tour)
might draw the Golden Bear
backapln.
"I enjoyed It," Nicklaus
said. "The golf coune la ftne
and people are nice. I'd lib to
haw an opportunity to play
better."
With Nicklaus In town for
the Tuahlba Oauk, the
crowds were b• than
usual with about 24,000 tn at·
tendance Friday and Sunday
and 22,000 for Saturday's sec·
ond round.
