Traffic
study on
council
agenda
For $235,000, contractor
would look at synchronized
signals and other measures
for easing congestion on
Newport Beach streets.
June C•u1rande
Daily Pilot
NEWPORT BfACH -The Spygla'>!> area
is just one place where the city ha<t ~-yn·
chronized traffic lights working to make
life easier for motorists.
They just don't work very well.
In hopes of addressing some traffic
problems, the Clty Council will tonight
consider spending $235,760 to help launch
a "tta.ffic Oow optimization project.·
If the councilmen say yes. Meyer. Mo-
haddes Associates inc. will be awarded a
contract in that amowu to examine traffic
Oow in some areas of the city and to rec
ommend improvements.
'ibere has been a lot of discussion about
this for the past year or so,· Mayor Steve
Bromberg said. "I'm pleased that we're fi.
nally taking a look at it through consulting
process. lhat's bow ypu get to where you
want to be on something like this.·
Because the item is on the consent cal-
endar, it's likely that council members will
~ it the go-ahead.
For its money, the city would get profes-
sional guidance on how to synchronize all
city-controlled traffic signals to minimize
the time motorists spend waiting at sig-
nals. which adds to traffic bottlenecks. The
company would fine-tune the timing of
signals in places where it would improve
traffic Oow. Meyer, Mohaddes wouJd also
assess and advise on all the c.aJtrans-oper-
ated signals in the dty.
In addition. the company will look at
otbel-low-and moderate-al5t ways to im-
prove traffic 6ow. For example, some inter-
sectioos could ~ improYed t:raflic Oow from
simple changies such as re-sniping lanes.
The project Is not likety to have any ef-
fect on the traflic-ptwing ordinance cur-
rently in place, Bromberg said.

Costa Mesa City Council should
think for itself on bridge issue
Cllda Fewel's letter to the editor ("Why the 19th
Street bridge is no good,• pee. 10) bring5 some ·
very refreshing aidcal thl.riking to the' 19th Stree't
bddge isltJe and the recent vote by the
Community Redevelopment Action Committee to
uk the City Council to study the economic impact
of a 19th Street bridge across Thibert Regional
Part.
My many years of involvement with real estate
development have convinced me that most
studies. when not otherwise required by law or
by a lending institution, are a crutch for people
who ~ unwilling or unable to think for
themselves.
As a longtime resident of the Westside, and as a
member of the Community Redevelopment
Action Committee, I have never heard a rational
argument in favor of this bridge. Fewel has
provided an excellent argument against the
bridge, and like him, I voted against aslci.ng the
Oty Council to fund this study.
I would vote. however, to ask the City Coun<;il
members to use their own brains and think for
themselves.

Praise for Wendy Leece belongs on
Forum pages, not the front page
I am outraged that you would publish such a
tawdry attempt at defending Wendy Leece and
bashing the Newport Mesa teachers ("Teachers'
union flexes political muscle,· Monday).
You have run several articles lamenting the
defeat of Leece, as if you know what is bes t for
the Newport-Mesa school district, even though
the voters, trustees and teachers have
repudiated her attempt to subvert public
education with her religious fundamentalism.
You should be thankful that the teacher's union
is acting to protect science education and the
separation of church and state from unJawfuJ
incursions of religious dogma.
Please stop editorializing on the front page of

On the other hand, Orange

greater than what can be served
under the new John Wayne plan.
However, no one has made the case
that these needs must be satisfied
within the boundaries of this
geographically small county. Orange
County is a land-scarce urbaniud
center. Airports belong in outlying
areas with less costly land, fewer
impacted homes. les,, crowded

togethe r to build an airport
in the Inland Empire?
N ow that the dream of the FJ Toro
International Airpon seems to be
dead, maybe it is time to consider
alternatives. I like che idea of exploring the
possibility of supporting the expanc;ion of
Ontario lntemationat Airport to satisfy
growing demand for passenger and cargo
usage from Orange County. I would like 10
see a feasibility study of using the existing
right·of-ways for the some of the freeways
and roadways that lead from Orange
County to Ontario for a light rdiJ system
(maybe elevated over the center divider)
that would be exclusively for
transportation to the airport. lnere could
be a limited number of .. stations" along
the route where airport passengers could
park their cars, and get checked-in with
curbside service, as is done at the airpon
(including checking baggage).
Furthermore. there could be a few
"stations/cargo terminals" where truck.<.
could unload their cargo which is airpon
bound, thereby saving them from having
to drive to Ontario. If such a system could
be designed, then the extra airport bound
traffic that would normally add to furtht.'r
congestion on our county ruad<; would be
minimized.

The only idea that really makes sense, if
you've traveled around the world, you will
notice that most international airports

finest international airports in the world in
the inland Camp Pendleton area The

everything else. The flights could Oy over it
and not bother anyone. It would be joint

would come from San Diego. Orange and

"Part of that was because-it 's

now we are adjusting and we

The lndians (3-4) pulled to

Whitfield's ability to break
down her defender. She scored
six of Newport's final eight

from a drive lo the basket.
Whitfield also helped shut
