The 81-year-old Costa Mesa
resident is ooe of the manyvohmteers
who took her time to wrap hundreds
of gifts for thole senior citizens who
celebrate the holiday at their home
away from home, the Costa Mesa
Senior Center.
Although the repetitive motion of
covering dozens of presents could be
viewed as a holiday chore, Lowry said
it was just another day of helping out

moderately priced, unwrapped gift.a

as classic movies. stationery. puzzles,
games and blankets. P.ach gift will be
handed out at the center's annual
holiday party.

running a Sunday-only swap
meet for almost eight months,
since college officials agreed to
scale back operations because of

Road.
Council members had vowed
they would oot endorse another
day at the swap meet until they

staffers and outside consultants
scrambled last ·week to ensure
that the City Council could re-
view a detailed traffic, parting
and management program be-
fore Monday's meeting.
In that lime, city and college
officials worked together, a pri-
vate consultant was hired. op-
tions were proposed to the Plan-
ning Commission and a new
swap meet was approved with an
average of 260 vendors per day.
A detailed presentation was
made by consultant Paul Wilkin-
son from Greenspan, Law and
Linscott, proposing a variety of
signs on the perimeter and in-
terior of the venue to better di-
rect traffic. AddJtional swap meet
staff would also be posted
throughout the area to keep
track of parking spaces and help
direct patrons to more vacant
lots.

Cal State LA outscored Vanguard, 10-7 in the
second overtime period to come out on top. Van-
guard junior guard Ryan Moreau led the Lions
(4-5) with 21 points, while Conrad Adamczak
(15), Josh Pierson {14), James Hartman {12) and
Ttm Burnette ( 10) also scored in double figures.
The Golden Eagles (3-2) were led by Ronald
Johnson. who scored a career-high 36 points. He

Carlos Pinto and Zack Novak added I 1 points
each and Pinto chipped in six rebounds for the
winners, who used a 16-2 second-quarter run to
rum a 24-20 deficit into a 36-26 halftime lead.
Estancia (5-1) closes out pool play in the Gar-
dea Grove Tournament tonight at 7:30 against
Garden Grove. That will be the third game of a
five-game week for the Eagles.

basketball team dropped a nonleague game to
Edison, 36·32, at Estancia High Tuesday night.
The Eagles (5-2) had "inconsistent scoring" as
Coach Tamette Rappa put it.
"We can't be scoring five, 13 then two points in
quarters,• said the first-year Eagle coach.
Estancia's two third-quarter points came on
free throws.
Trisha Wase had 11 points and Nancy Castro
added nine points for the Eagles. who shot 13 for
39 from the field.
Tisha Gray scored seven points. grabbed 10 re-
bounds and blocked two shots. Xochitl Byfield
also bad two blocks.

Jillianne Whitfield had 12 points and Undsey
Woll er added 10 to pace a balanced attack for the
Sailors (5-2). Whitfield had six rebounds, five as-
sists and three steals, Woller added seven re-
bounds and Victoria Swigert chipped in nine
points and six rebounds.

•GIRLS SOCCER: The Sage HiJJ High girls soc-
cer team won its first game of the season in shut·
out fashion.
The Lightning (1-5) defeated Saddleback VaJ-
Jey Ouistian, 3-0. at Sage Hill Tuesday on goals
by Sara Becker, Vista Murphy and Janele Shock-
ley. Becker scored her goal in the first half on an
assist from Katie McJGnerick to give Sage Hill a
1-0 haJftime lead. Amy Werbin crossed to Shock-
ley for the Lightning's final goal. Sophomore
goalkeeper Laura Gordon made five saves and
Murphy played the last 12 minutes in net, said
Lightning Coach Amy Ray.

league. competed in the All-C.On-
ference finale Dec. 7.
Eddy, 11, earned a spot on the
Orange County all-conference
team that lost to Los Angeles
C.Ounty's squad, 19-12. Though
she made a name fur herself as a
running back. Eddy played as a
defensive back. while her Sea-
hawtc teammate Buzzy Yokayama
was an all-conference defensive
lineman
Eddy played in portions of the
first quarter, then the entire fourth
quarter. She caused a fumble that
led to an Orange County recovery
with about four minutes remain-
ing, giving her team a chance to
tie the game. But a pass fell in-
complete, as time ran out,' ending
the comeback.
