N Aaron shows that if you have an idea and pursue it, even kids get listened to, if you pursue it the right way," said Candy Ooud, the principal at Aaron's school, Adams Elementary In Costa Mesa. Aaron, a fifth-grader, couldn't believe it when his school stopped offering pizza for lunch every Thursday and switched to every other Thursday. "I was enraged," Aaron said. "They, canceled it and didn't let anyone know." Cllris, suggested be survey his peers instead to get a better handle on the popularity of pizza at the school. "I'm an· engineer, so I know that having numbers Lo back up your opinion is important," Cluis said. The results showed the stu- dents overwhelmingly favored pizza. "It turns out that out of 389 students who participated, 371 wanted the pizza back every Thursday," Aaron said. "That's 95%." When Mark Reed, general manager of the Cluck E. Oleese In Torrance, caught wind of Aaron's crusade·. he was in- spired .. •Aaron did something I Wish I had done when I was 11 ," Reed said. So Reed made some calls and ultimately arranged for a live Oiuck E. Oleese show to come to Adams Elementary to enter- tain the students. On Friday, the company donated 100 large cheese pizzas and put on three shows. While Adams stCldents mer-' rily chowed down on pizza, Aaron shied away from taking the credit. All because he took a stand and followed the correct chan- nels in expressing his beef - well, more like his pepperoni - to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. He expressed his chagrin to his mom and suggested distrib- uting a petition to bring the weekly pizza back. His mom, So Aaron submitted the re- sults with a letter to Richard Greene, the district's director of food services. On Dec. 4, Greene declared that the piz.za would return every Thursday. The reason feoner school board member Wendy Leece lost is because she represents a very small, extreme minority within the community. Most of us view her as an obstructionist and someone who kept the schools from being all they could be. RHEA DORN Costa Mesa Definitely, the teachers' union bas too much power, which wouldn't be quite so bad If the students were their first priority. But it's clear that the students are not their first priority. That was a great article. DEANNA ROSS Corona .del Mar I just wanted to say that on election day I voted for anybody but Wendy Leece because J don't and never did agree with a lot of ber ideas, and the teachers' union had nothing to do with It. Jt was a matter of Wendy Leece's record as I perceived it. PAT KRONE Newport Beach I'm a retired teacher from Redlands Unified School District. All I have to say is, what gall does Wendy Leece have? BECKY RtCKER Corona del Mar FClRilM READERS RESPOND l don'i feet they haw too much power. As the teachers' union, they have the right to lobby and try to get candidates elected who suppon teachers.. I myself am a teacher In a different school district and l can say that most teachers, Including myself, want good working conditions, good conditions of learning for our students and we want school boards who are responsive to the needs of education and not just trying to make political points with various interest groups. As far as Wendy Leece ls concerned, I'm sick and tired of hearing her whining about the fact that she lost the election. She was in there f<>r eight years, she had her views and they were kind of out of the ballpark with most people. She had her chance and now she lost the election; that's the democratic process. There's somebody new in there. Give them a cbarice. If she wants to run in four years or whenever the next election is that's fine, but quit whining about it and get on with your life. LENARD DAVIS Newport Beach I do not believe that the Newport-Mesa Teachers' Union has too much power. I think they know what's good for kids. They're representing the teachers of this district and they made a good choice in the people that they wanted us all to vote for, and that's why Wendy Leece is no longer a member or that board. BARBARA PRICE Newport Beach No, I don't tbink the teacher's union has ioo much power, but what I do tbink is I am sick and tired of picking up the Pilot every single day and reading about Wendy Leece.
