the arrangement
Debra Richardson, chair o( the school, did
say the move will elevate the new schools
visibili ty and enhance its recruitment efforts.
·11 really says something about the com-
mitment of this campus to this field and
says something about the interdisciplinary
nature and breadth of ow program that
we're able to function as a school,· Richard-
son said. "A lot of that is attractive to faculty
who might be looking for a new. cutting-
edge. on-the-frontier kind of unit to join.·
UCI established the department in 1968,
three years after the university opened.
Since its inception, it has functioned as an
independent unit, offering bachelor's. mas-
ter's and doctoral degrees. It is the univer-
sity's second largest undergraduate major.
fourth largest master's program and fifth
largest doctoral program.
Department faculty first floated the idea
of becoming a school about I 0 years ago,
Richardson said Richardson became chair
in July 2000 and made it her primary goal
The staff felt the department deserved to
be a school because of its large size, its
popularity as a major and its need to lceep
up with development in the field.
The departmen t submitted a proposal to

The transformation from a department to

around the country. More than 40 computer
science schools have been established
nationwide. UO 's will be the first in the Uni-

Four residents in the

tried putting out the fire on
their own with extin-

progress. said Donna Bos-

While the Fhe Depart-

said.
"What kept it from
spreading was the fact that

The reason
to be joyful
this year
Y es, we should give
of ourselves all year
long -so many in
Newport-Mesa do.
But it does make sense to
give a little more this time of
year. .
The difference between the
haves and have-nots seems
magnified during the
holidays.
Those without have to
watch commercial after
commercial telling their kids
all the joy that's to be bad if
they just owned this or that
toy. They have to be
reminded what they can't
give the ones they love.
Advertisements, movies and
grocery stores remind many
of the Christmas feast they
can't afford.
Whether it's been a bad
year or a hard life, it can't be
joyful to realize the holidays
are coming and you're in for
another two months of
having all things you can't
afford thrown in your face.
Probably worse than the
financial woes is the
loneliness that can creep up
while others plan for trips
back home and holiday
gatherings. It's no secret that
this time of the year is the
hardest for many. Sadness is
made even more bitter when
we are told constantly we
should be happy.
We're fortunate here that
these problems are relatively
few and far between. Huge
Otristrnas trees are the norm,
not the exception. Shops are
filled with people who can
afford to put presents
beneath the Christmas tree
and stuff the stockings that
hang by the chimney (with
care).
But even here, amid so
much wealth, fortune and
luck. there are folks who
aren't having a joyful holfday.
For them, we're most
fortunate that so many
among us worlc to ease their
pains.
Doing so speaks to the ttue
meaning of this time of year.

presents for your loved ones?
Have I go1 a deal for you. It's an
innovative idea. No money
down, no chasing around the
mall parking lot searching for a
parking place. You might caU it
a fresh approach to giving
presents. It's wrapped with
kindness and tied with the
ribbon of love. It's based on
time-tested principles that
came to light thousands of
years ago when a star
appeared in the heavens. And
It even comes with an owner's
manual. A thick one. Here are a
few simple girts you might give
to yow loved ones that might
slick with them long after the
batteries ln the portable CD
player gtve out. They might not
be as tangible as four calling
birds, three French hens and
two turtle dovea, but they don't
need a lot or blrd seed and take
up decidedly less room In the
house.
So let the 12 days or
Cluistmu begln. They start on
Dec. 25 (the blrth of OirlsO

the Mqt (Epiphany).
