wrote Johnson Lau, Ribapbann's chair
and chief executive.
ICN responded three days later by
announcing that it Intended to remove
five of the six Ribapbarm board mem-
bers, lnduding Lau.
In a return Jettet ICN OWnnan and
Chief P..xecutive Robert O'Leary criti-
cized the Ribapbarm boards decision
to issue stock options and q.sh bo-
nuses to senior ~t earlier
this mooth as "unorthodox and bi8NY

That same day, Dec. 23, ICN -Incor-

The Delaware Cllancery Court. on

the order, the Ribapbarm board is re-
quired to give 10 business days' notice
before taking any action "outside of the
ordinaty coune" of running the com-

had to be dozens. He showed
remark.able resiliency and
continued good cheer.
And yes, it was Jeff who
pointed out to thousands or
people that on the back of the
boat was t:.GBAR. the alligator
mascot for Simple Green, which
was the titJe sponsor for the
boat para.de.
EGBAR, by the way, stands for
"everylhing's gonna be alJ right ..
-I told you that would come
up again.
Along with Jeff, the chamber's
Karin Graw. acted as the
amiable host, far too willing to
fill up glasses with cider when
we were more than capable of
teetering down the steep
staircase from the top deck.

downfall of the city. Neither are
the Halfacres, who are
members of the chamber's
Commodores Oub, which is
peopled by those Greenlight
attackers. These are people who
wan1 what's bes1 for Newport
Beach.
And the folks behind
Greenlight are no more wicked.
Phil Arst, George Jeffries and
~lyn Hart, to name just three,
are dedicated to improving the
city in which they Live.
Certainly, there is
disagreement about what'~ best
for Newport. But in playing up
that disagreement, the beliefs
these people share (including
that Newpon deserves the best,
that Republicans deserve to be
in charge in Washington, and, I
bet, that a martini deserves to

and said the city's prompt action

neighbor who lost pets from an
unrelated electrical fire. Within
days, there was news of a fire at
a Costa Mesa cleaners, a
business office and two Newport
Beach homes.
Who would argue that a man
who molested three young
chlldren should be sparred the
rest of his life i.n prison? No one
but defense attorney Fay Arla.
who claimed a 15-year prison
sentence for his client, Thomas
Michael Murphy, was cruel and
unusual punishmenL Arfa said
molesting young children was
not violent and that Murphy did
not deserve to be loclced up with
murders and violent crlrnlnals.
Word on the street ·has it that
violent criminals take offense at
being placed in the same camp
as child offenders and make
their disapproval of such
conduct known inside prison
walls.

Tbe Orange County Sanitation
District was admonished in a
grand jury report that said
sanitation district leaders bad
not "disclosed the existence of
all publicly funded studies." The
district conveniently buried
studies that showed a plume or
waste water ttaveling along the
ocean Ooor toward tbe beach.

and that it was the first fire they

A panel of Superior Court
judges ruled that the city has the
light to ticket dog owners who
let animals off the leash while
swimming in the ocean. The

ticketed more than a few times

Control officers for lening their
golden retriever Red Baron swim
in the ocean without holding on
to his leash. Baron enjoyed a

was Rupert, the Balboa
Peninsula's unofficial mascot,
died in early October ln the
hospital where she was being
treated for an infection. No
one was sure how Pearl
suffered a wound to her leg,
though It was assumed to be a
dog bite. Pearl and Rupert bad
made several visits to the
Wetlands and Wildlife Care
Center for o the r
life-threatening ailments, such
as being covered in petroleum
oil and getting caught up with
hooks. Pearl's age was ·

Greenwalt, a Oeet 6-foot-3,
185-pounder who could catch
well and was difficult to cover
for opposing prep defenses in
1989 and '90, was a two-time
AJJ-CIF Southern Section
Division VJ selection for
Brinkley's Sallors, who finished
9·3 and 8-4 in those seasons,
respectively, while maching the
CIF quarterfinals both years.
About a decade ago when the

Last year, Lenderman received her under-
graduate degree in alhletic training and for the
pasl three seasons she has been an extra athletic
trainer for the squad. Lenderman also provides
leadership and inspiration for the Lions, Davis
said.
·1n basketball she went from scoring two
points a game 10 10 points a game," Davis said
·she's a 1olal 1eam player. She is someone who
had not played before. She played behind some
All-American players for us. l.asl year she shared
the point guard with Beth Weidler, then the year
before she played behjnd Beclci ttuddle and be-
fore that Amy Pena. Now Jessica knows all the
plays inside and oul. She 1ells everyone where to
go. She's like a coach. She runs the 1eam out
there."
Lenderman has been one of the main rea-
sons the Uons are off 10 a hol slart in the
Golden Staie Athletic Conference. Vanguard Is
3·0 in the GSAC which includes a 69-58 upset
win over previously unbeaten Blola, which was
ranked No. 12 in the NAlA at the ti.me. Lender-
man scored 10 points and dished out five as-
sists in the Lions' dramatic win.
Vanguard was voted ninth out of the 11
teams in the GSAC in the coaches' preseason
poll.
"That definiteJy gave us modvalion. N Lenderman
said of the preseason ranldngs. "We know that we
are nol a ninth-place team in the conference. We
were in shodc. We came in third place last year:
After the Lions defeated Biola Dec. 3, they
took care of Concordia, 65-55, Dec. 7. Lender-
man, the Daily Pilo1 College Athlete of the
Month for December, scored a game-high 16
points and dished out six assists.
Lenderman has led the Lions 10 a 4 -J record
going into today's game with Southern Naza-
rene at 4 p.m. She is scoring 9.5 points per
game and averaging 3.8 assists in each contest.

"I never thought as my role to be the high
scorer or anything like that," Lenderman •aid.
"I think 1 should get us into the offense and get
the ball to the great shooters on the team. I

My focus is on whatever I can do to
