become a teacher, a professor inspired
her to look. within and find her distinct

Early on in her elementary tf'aching
career, Cook. W'J.'> forced to chooM> be·
tween teaching math/science and Ian·
guage arts She chose the former be·
cause of her affinity for both subiects.
. It wasn't unttl a few years later when
she was teachmg m Greece and at-
tended a conference in Iran that the
math muses got ahold of her for good.
At the conference, she served as a worlc-
shop leader and was instructed to re·
tum lo her classroom to try something
different She went back. to her seventh·
and eighth-grade math clas.ses with a
pas.tiionate focus for teaching math with
a hands-on approach.

Rohrabacher aJso visited the Middle
East, touring the front lines on Lhe
Kuwaiti border with Iraq and meeting
with American military. Then it was off
to London to meet with Iraqi

spent the Olristmas holidays In
Newport Beach with his family.
On Ouistmas Eve, he took his three
children and wife to Our Lady Queen
of Angels for mass and, the nex-t day,
hosted 18 relatives for dinner. On the
weekend, he took his kids skiing at Big
Bear and also took hls 9-year-old son,
Cllarles, fishing out of Davey's Locker.
They mostly caught ocean perch, but
Otarles' lessons paid off as tie snagged
a sand shark. which he thre back. ...

video that it hopes will spread a
countywtde message to keep wa-
ter clean The city of Laguna
Beach and the lrvme Ranch Wa-
ter Dt~tnct, who helped finance
the producuon, will get a screen-
u'tg on Jan. 9 If they approve, the
c11y will begm d1stnouting the
Video 10 numerous agencies 10
Orange County to spread the
word. local cable suiuons, school
districts and other agencies.

tion is that It goes Into the sewer.
But the truth is that any time you
throw something down a storm
drain or even in.the street it end!>

Jackson said it's likely that the
film will come under ilS $24.000
budget because of the donated
effons of-volunteers like G.ron-
sky. Newport Beach, Laguna
Beach and the water district
each commined $8,000 to the
project. The two coastal cities
i.hare an interest in teaching in-
land residents about water
quality. The water district hopes
that Increased public awareness
will aid its efforts to preserve
wetlands as part of its natural
water treaunent system.
Jackson added that once all
the parties have approved it. the
city might hold a screening dur-
ing an upcoming City Council
meeting.

12 UCJ baseball revival -After a to-year hiatus, the Ant·
eaters, without a single player with previous Division I
experience, posted the fifth-highest win total (33-26) in
the program's 24-seasons.
Coach John Savage's squad, which played in the brand new Ant-
eater Ballpark. finished tied with perennial power Cal Stale Fullerton
for founh in the Big West Conference (14-10). UQ's victories included
those over Pac-10 champion USC. as wel1 as UCl..A. Cal and BYU.
13 Prep football fizzles -Despite an unprecedented perfect
league season by Costa Mesa. which claimed only the
school's second outright league crown in its 43-season
varsity history, no Newport-Mesa squad won a CIF
Southern Section playoff game. for the first time since 1998.
Mesa (8-3), Newport Harbor (7-4J and Corona del Mar (6-5) posted
