transporting a kitten JO miles tu my
home wouJd be anything other than a
breew. So the only thing I had brought
with me to accomplish the task was a
small cardboard box with holes poked
In it In hindsight. I should probably
have b~ght a whip and a chair.
The moment I put the kitten in the
box and placed It on the back seat of my
car. the animal started howtlng and
hurling herself against the sides of the
container. At first I ignored the

a box thar I hod
folded tightly shul.
But as I pulled c11llo
the freewdy, I
glanced in the
rearview mirror and
saw that the kltten
was launchlnginlo

container with such
force that the boll was actually llf11ng off
the back seat.
"Shh! Calm down, you!" I houted, to
no effect. "Get a grip! Don't make me
come back there!"
But J was wasting my breath. The
kitten in my back seat was no mere
feline. As I had discovered when I
arrived 10 get her. Emera.Id Forest was a
feline who had spent the first weeks of
her life being chased hy a ferocious.

Bruiser. TI1c experience was like Marine
boot camp for klttens. In order to
survive. P.merald Forest had quickly
become very fast and very strong.
And, suddenly, she was our of the
box.
Just as I was pulling Into the fast lane.

and the lid wide open.
I was driving 65 mph on tJ1e freeway.
