rona del Mar, the biggest hurdle
to the Corona del Mar Vision

Judge denies motion in 1979 murder case

County judge on Monday denied a re-
quest made by James Crummel's de-
fense team to admit evidence that
could have exonerated him of charges
in the lcilling of a Costa Mesa teenager
in 1979.
The defense team last spring un-
successfully attempted lo connect ex-
ecuted murderer William Bonin. t.he
notorious "Freeway Killer," to 13·
year·old lruney 1'totter's death. om-
cials arrested Crummel in Newport
Beach in 1997 in rnnnection with
'lr...,!'!et's death after he reportedly led
police to the boy's remains on a
wooded trail olT the Ortega Freeway.
last week in Riverside County. the
defense presented lame~ Munro. who
they said told five people over a pe·
riod of 22 years 1ha1 Bonin killed Trot-
ter. Munro was a co-defendant of Bo-
nin's and testified aKainst him in the
last murder Bonin was convicted of.
He is serving a life sentence for being
an accomplice in one of Bonin's mur·
ders.
THE VERDICT
But Munro initially refused IC> le~
tify and then recanted hjs s1ory link
ing Troller's death to Bo nin in court

Deputy Dist. Atty. Bill Mitchell said
he is pleased wit11 Judge Dennis
McConaghy's decision to find 1he evi -
dence inadmissible. He said Munro
was not a credible witness and that
his statements were riddled \.vith in·
consistencies.
"Not hearing this piece of evidence
will make the case shorter ... Mitchell
said. "I'm relieved by this decision
and wiU be even more relieved when
the trial is over and (Crummell is
found guilty."

the F.I Nido and Snug I !arbor trailer parks
complain about the closure process for
the last year.
While thoc;e complaint~ were enough to
inspir<· consideration of regulatio ns to
clarify the process, they weren't enough to
convinc<' 1he rnuncil 10 approve those
regulations. On Monday, the council re-
jected an o rdinance that would have given
the city m ore authority over the closure
and conversion of m obile hom e parks.
The decision means the more general
state law will remain as the on1y require·
m ent.

School and Jen well-dressed and
ready for Easter.

began. Lord added some color 10 her
students' reading lesson with some
Easter egg dying. While one group of
students read with Lord, a second
group bellied up to a bar of mason
jars filled with brightly colort'd dye,,
Joseline Arreaga. 7. went srraight
for the red. Marlo Salas. 6. grabbed
blue and Dulce Barragan, 6, ~derll·d
a bright pink.

up a v.'ire dipper and demonstrated
the proper egg-dying technique to

egg in the blue dye and
concentrated caretuUy as he Jif1ed ii

Dulce took the jar of i.,rreen dye
and lowered another egg into it. She
looked up to see what the other
children were using.
"l want that one," she said,
pointing at Marios blue.
"I want that one," Joseline said,
pointing at Dulce's pink. which
matched Joseline's sweater almost
perfectly.
Meanwhile, Marios was ready. He
took out his egg. colored a perfect
robin's-egg blue.
The girls gasped at its beauty.
"Look at that, I want that!" Dulce
exclaimed.
"Me too!" Joseline added
At Lord's table, students took turns
reading from "Lost!" j story about a
boy aJld a bear who get lost in
Manhattan. In the story, tJ1e boy
takes the bear to the park. for hot
dogs and on an elevator -shocking
fellow riders.
Why. Lord asked. would that be
such a i.urprise?
.. A bear would eat you," said
7-year-old Ricardo Gutierrez. whose
language skills belied having been in
the country from Mexico since only
Ckwber.
Then it was 7-year-old Ron
Urquii'..a's tum to read. Jennifer Rios.
6, sat across from him with her book
open. hut her mind was clearly
elsewhere.
Jennifer leaned back in her seat.
watching the other children dye
their eggs. and waited for her group
to head over for some decorating of
their own.

ter a 7-6 loss Saturday. they sure didn~
show ii Monday. when they defeated
visiting Paramount. 2-0. In a consola-
tion quarterfinal of the Pride or the
Coast baseball tournament.
The Mustangs (6-6) earned all the
runs they needed in the Brst Inning,
when junior Alex Pisarski pounded his
first home run of his high school career
and junior Andrew Sanford added an
RBI double.
SenJor pitchers Gary Gonzalez. Daniel
Cooper and Justin Peterson combined
for a one-hitter.
C'.osta Mesa had just four hits. but
Pisarski and Sanford produced the most
meaningful.

Grove in the final. 52-30 .
The Timberwolves. comprised
of third-and founh-graders. fin·
ished the season undefeated, fol-
lowing a 43 -29 victory in lhe final
agalnst a ream from Garden
Grove.
The Trojans (9-1) defeated an -
other team from Garden Grove in
the semifinals. after posting a 55-
l 8 triumph over Buena Park in
the first round. Aaahlah Vanna,
