that reflects library supporters' grati-

W hen talldng about
Jifecycles, it all funnels
back lo that age-old
question, "Which came
first, the chicken or the egg?"
Well the second-graders at Wilson
Elementary School in Costa Mesa
found themselves tussling with that
conundrum on Thursday.
As pan of the la Habra Oilldren's
Museum's Student Outreach
Program, Wllson students got the
chance to partake in an interactive
science lesson, compliments of the
museum. The class will eventually
get a field trip to the museum in
March.
Wilson Elementary second-graders ask
themselves if the egg or the chicken appeared first
"It's always nice having a different
voice.~ said Sandy Kaszynslcl. one of
the second-grade teachers at WUson.
"When you teach, h's nice to have
the hands-on content, language and
concepts .... ll all comes together
cognitively."
Keeping in line with second-grade
curriculum, srudents at Wllson got the
chance to learn about lifecycles from
an expert other than their teacher.
Staning their lesson with a bag of
plastic frogs representing different
life stages, the studentS worked
independently as they learned about
how a frog develops and changes
throughout its lifespan.
But the true complexities of
lifecycles were quickly revealed when
the students worked together in
groups.
Faced with the tumultuous task of
placing cards depicting different life
stages of a chicken in sequential
order, the studentS simply could not
decide where to put the full -grown
chicken -before or after the egg.
Though they choked before that
long-standing poser, the
second-graders rose to th~ challenge
of documenting life stages of a slew
of other animals.
"We're making the cycle go bigger
and bigger so that the rat can grow
up," 7-year-old Timmy Kakkanan
said.
Happy to have accomplished their
feat, the srudentS at \"Jilson gained a
more in-depth understanding of
Ufecycles, thanks lo their children's
museum teacher-for-a-day, Cristy
War.Jdn!>.
"It's so exciting to watch them do it
and lo be so excited abou( the things
they're doing and what they're
learning," Kaszynski said.

VERDICT
Continued from Al
beach. ~ It Is a well-known
fact that police hate to walk on
the and. Maybe they don't want
to get their shoes dirty. Anyway,
they ubd Don to bring the man
from the water's edge to the
parking lot where the police unit.
was standing.
Don walked over to the drunk
and told him the.police wanted
him. Tho inebriated to properly
appreciate Don's alze, the ~
told Don to go to hell. Don
repeated bis request The drunk
looked up and finally took in all.
6 feet 7 inches of the man before
him. •c.arry me,• he said with a
smirk.
"No," said Don. ·1 won't carry
you..
"How are you going to get me
over there, then?" the drunk
inq~
"I'm going to throw you.•
The drunk looked at the about
200 yards of sand between him
and the police unit and said,
with perfect confidence, "You
can't throw me that far.•
·oh. yes. I can,· said Don. He
picked up the drunk and threw
him about 8 feet The drunk
landed in the sand with a clatter.
Don walked over, picked him up
and threw him another 8 feet
This drne, the drunk looked at
that 200 yards of hard sand
between them and the police
unit and said, "You going to do
this all the way over there?"
"Yes I am," Don replied.
The drunk got up and
staggered to the police unit.
In his later years, Don became
a world-class sailor. One night.
he went overboard, a fact that
wasn't discovered until the next
morning. They turned the boat
around ~d. by some miracle,
actualij managed to find him.
Don, none the worse for five
or six hours of treading water.
greeted their arrival quite
casually, as If finding a person,
even a large person, in the
