unconscious 16-year·old girl in
Don Haidl's Corona del Mar

What prosecutors say these
men, who were boys at the time
of the incident, did to the victim
would make anyone cringe. They
accuse the teens of sexually as-
saulting the girl' with various ob·

rolling.

mean bone in hls body. When he
sees blood on TY, he jerks his
head away. If you raise your
voice at him. tears would roll
down his face."

parents about where she was go--

But prosecutors say they have
a key piece of evidence that will
prove the allegations -a 20·
minute digital videotape, which
has reportedly captured the en·

Former Newport Harbcrr volleyball standout
experiencing his dream of a life on the farm.
Steve Vlr1en
Dally Pilot
W hen Tim Wettel

experien~ a sense of pride.
He's a long way from home.
away from !he beaches he grew
up near. Now, Wet:7.el. a Newport
Harbor High product who
applies rus years of voUeyball
experience to his everyday life,
enjoys his farm in Idaho. where
he raises horses, as well as apples
and plums.
"It's a good feeling," Wetzel
said of looking over rus land, that
covers roughly 100 acres.. ·it's
great to see all the growth. Bui
when it's l 00 tlegrees in the
middle of July, you're not
thinking about that. I miss the
ocean. It's a big difference."
Because of volleyball, Wetzel
has attained many auributes that
help him as a Carmer, computer
technician, husband and father.
"VoUeyball has meant a lot,"
said Wetzel. a volleyball standout
who graduated from Newpon
Harbor in 1975. ·11 taught me
mental toughness and you can
carry that to every aspect in your
life. Hopefully, I can pass it on to
my kids."
For the past 12 years. Wetzel,
his wife, Tumara. and their three
childrt'n, Jesse (20), Jake (11) and
Kelsey (8), have been living on
the fann in Payette County. near
a town called Weiser.
"I always wanted to own land
and for the kids to have their
place 10 play," Wetzel said. "I
wan1ed to be able to set up my
own volleyball court. And I have
been able to do all that."
WelUl has been able to
accomplish a great deal of
success in his life, and voUeyball
has been one of the main
reasons. Wetzel wru1 a four-year
varsity performer at Newport
Harbor, where he started as a
freshman.
Wetzel, who described himself
as a spoiled brat when he was a
teenager, struggled in his junior
year and shuttled between the
varsity and junior varsity
throughout the sea.son.
"I guess I was a rebel, you
cou1d say," Wetzel said.
Wetzel a 6-fool setter, did not
go agaJnst the grain in his senior
year. He bounced back and
earned first-team All-Sunset
League honors. as he helped lead
the Sailors to the league
championship.
"I always liked to play
Huntington Beach, which had
Rocky Oarelli I now the coach of
the Oilers!.• We1.7,ei said. ·And
also playing against Corona del
Mar. Those were the bes1
matches."
Wetzel played alongside Mike
Blanchard, a Newport middle
bloclcer who went on to star at
Pepperdine, where he Jed the
Wdves to an NCAA title and was
named MVP.
After playing for the Sailors,
Wetzel went on to help lead Long
Beach Oty CoUege to the state
championship. This tlme, Qarelli
was on his team, as well as
Blanchard.
Before using his second year of
eligibility, Wetzel traveled to
Europe and lived there for nine
months. Then he went to Orange
Coast College and played under
his father, Bob. the Pirates' head
coach.
Tim Wetzel did not make ·it
through the season competing
for his father's team. He quit
because. at the time, he had
differences with the coach. The
two have maintalned a great
relationship Wl<l continue to stay
ln touch.
·He was right and I was
wrong.· nm Wetzel said of his
time with his father at OCC "I le\
a great guy. He's just great"
Wettel fml<ihed out his coUege
voUeyball career. playing for the
University of 1 lawaii and Coach
Dave Shoji. He was the starting
setter for two seasons for the
then-Rainbows.
After college. Wetzel co111inued
to compete in voUeyball, playing
internationally. as ~n as on the
beach, for 15 years. He also
worked as an official.
Wettel also became involved
with coaching. I le worked as the
head coach at Newport Harbor
and also at Costa Mesa. He
~ted his father and former
CXX: women's voUeybcil coach
lane Hilgendorf for four years in
the late 1980s.
Wet7.el works as a voice and

"I definitely took the road less
