NEWPORT-MESA -Voters

State and county officials
have been looking at the elec·

of concerns about accuracy and

To be approved for use in the
November election, any decertl·

have a paper record that voters
can check before they cast their
ballots, or they must meet 23
security criteria. One of those
criteria is that each voter must
be able to opt out of uslog the
electronic machine and have
the option of using a paper bal-

Other security criteria include
that the system must not have a
wireless Internet or telephone

software must be tested by state

Intelligent debate requires
knowing all of the facts
On April 27, fay Baker of Corona del
Mar wrote to the Dally Pilot that there
are supporters of the war on terrorism
("War on terrorism has its supporters,
as well"). Baker demeans Joseph Bell for
listening to, and understanding, a
couple of ex-military officers who have
experience In the field .
It is from experience that knowledge
can be derived from, and history gives
us many valuable lessons. We can learn
from past mistakes to nol repeat those
mistakes, and we can learn from
experience how 10 improve on those
thlngs that we did well.
Of course. we all are against
terrorism, whether It Is Saudi men

the World fude Center or Tunothy

I am afraid Baker has been listening
to the "neocons" espousing
Inaccuracies and Oat-out lies. First or
all, Baker says Saddam Hussein dJctaled
the mWJons of mass murders of his own
people with chemical weapons and
torture chambers. This plainly Is
Incorrect. Yes, Saddam did use
cbemlcal weapons on the Kurds, but
Saddam never thought of them as h1s

Belinda petforms is that she Is part
organization guru and part personal
counselor.
"Oh, yes. you'll St.>e." she said
Another aspect or her personal
coaching is h er tactful insistence on my
defining my Intrinsic values and life
path.
"Will you be wanting to keep this hair
ornament?" is Belinda's WdY of saying
that unless it has extreme personal
value, throw the thing out The same
holds for. "all these papemacks."
"Will you be reading them agam, or
do you think a women's shelter would
enjoy themr she asks.
(Note: this does not apply to my
complete collection of Elizabeth George
or other quality authors -this is more
like Sweet Valley High from my
daugb.ter's primary school years).
We're making big progress. Part of the
reason Belinda is so good at wha1 she
does, is that she can vi.!uallze what is
not there. When I mentioned the phrase,
ft everything in its place," she beamed.
"Yes," she said, throwing a·Otrlstma.s

Now that is an unexpected, unique
experience.
We were given the freedom to
roam the plane after takeoff. The
Oight went lo the Queen Mary and
back. Among the Wdmlngs wdS
strict lnstructlons to avoid the
bomb-bay doors. Apparently, they
are designed to open should a
bomb fall out of the raclc during
flight. TI1erefore, stepping on them
would result in a quick trip back to
Earth. Between that and the rather
large openings on the sides, ii was
the kind of experience that really
got the adrenalin going.
We ended up in the tall gunner
turret, where my little boy did not
look overly small. I have no idea
who the army recruited to man
this thing. lo any event, he had
180-degree views -side to .side,
