Suddenly everyone's an

thinks they're me. The nerve.
My inJdal reaction to
learning about the book and
witnessing the hype has been
immarure indeed.
You know how a 5-year-old
who a week before did some
cartwheels might feel ripped
off if be sees someone on TV
doing cartwheelst You know,
that "Hey. they stole my

know how that child may go
a step further and bitterly

"That's not bow you're

WeU. that's the level of
emotional maturity I
exhibited when I came across
revif"WS and commentaries in
the New Yort Times, Los
Angeles Times and other
publications.. I was very
embarrassed by this reaction
until I actually read these
commentaries.
Now, by comparison. I
think I'm prerty matutt.
"There's not much chance
thar a book whose title
hinges on a bad joke poses a
threat ro such classics as
Strunk and White's 'Elements
of Style.' Henry Fowler'~
'Dictionary of Modem
English Usage' and George
Orwell's 'Politics and the
English Language,'" Dennis
Baron wrote in Friday's Los
Angeles Tunes.. "But it shares
the faults of the genre:
Relying on such books for
advice on writing ls like
relying on the almanac for a
weather forecast.•
In the May 3 New York
Times. John Rosenthal gets in
the shot: "Thanks to Lynne

Edmund Morris in the
April 25 New Yort Tunes
called Truss' prose ·c1oytng"
and added. ·Whole '1:retcbes
of the book read like voice
mail"
After all thar venom, none
of these critics manages to
make clear what they're so
angry abouL I suspect they're
logography.
They aU off er plenty of
critklsm, but little that's
constructive or Instructive to
readers who really would like
some help with grammar and
punctuation. Baron lumps
Truss' book in with a half
dozen others and basically
writes them all off as stupid
and dangerous In the hands
of dolts.
After his column comes
our big clue to his real
problem: ·Dennis Baron is
the author of seven books on
the English language.· I don't
suppose any of them is an
autobiography utled "Eats
Sour Grapes and Leaves (in a
Huff)."
Another clue comes from
Morris: "At risk of sounding
parochial myself, I wish that
Truss had devoted a few
pages to taXing on the usage
czars of American academe
-particularly those at the
Modem Language
Association and University of
Oucago Press. whose
anti-capital, antl·hyphen.
anti-italic stylebooks seek to
return modem logogaphy to
the uniformity of ancient
papyri."
I never want 10 come off as
someone who had some bug
crawl up her papyri and <lie
because clearly I can't
compete with these guys. So
I'll JUSt continue trying to be
helpful and humble (in my
own dazzling way} instead of
I OMii self-serving.
So, In that spirit, here's this
week's help. As we covered
before, hyphens are used to
connect compound
modifiers. two words that
wort together 10 make up an
adjective or sometimes an
adverb: a famUy-orienred
film. But here's a trick I didn't
cover: Don't use hyphens
with adverbs ending Inly. In
the term *happily married
couple,• you don't need a
hyphen to tell you that
"happily" and "married" are
working together as an
adjective. The ly already tips
you off. But be careful orly
nouns like family.
"Family-oriented mm· is

CdM ~s Macklin hurt,

The Corona del Mar Hi8h baseball

Emme said It Is unllkety Macklin, who

Pat Callaghan felt out or

He has always loved soccer.
Yet. after college, he was involved
In an entirely different arena.
c.allaghan, who starred in
soccer at Corona del Mar High in
the late 1980s, was a salesman
right out of coUege. And, he was
not happy.
"ltjust wasn't rewarding,·
Callaghan said. "( didn't like what
I was doing.'l didn't fee.I like I was
giving back.~
Callaghan wanted to
give bade to his roots. He
grew up in Newport
Beach and played for the
local AYSO team coached
by his father, Richard..
He also competed in track and
field and was a key contributor
for Coach Dave Holland's football
team in the fall of 1988.
Callaghan played as an outside
linebacker and aJso was the
licker for the Sea ~ who
went 12-0-2 and won the OF
Southern Section Otvlsion VI ti.tie.
"I enjoyed being on the
football team," Callaghan said. ~1
injured my knee my junJor
season and dJdn~ play that much
soccer. So when I was a senior, I
decided I wanted to play
everything. ..
When the sOccer
season came. c.allaghan
made sure to make bis
senior year matter. He
scored 15 goals and led
__,,,..-='• the Sea ~.to the CIF
pJayoffil.
He was left
disappointed because in
c.atlaghan also played
soccer at Corona del Mar
and enjoyed his best
season as a senior when Pat Callaghan the final game of the regular season,
he was named MVP of the Sea
\dew League.
He then went on to Orange
Coast College, where he helped
lead the Pirates to the state
cruunpionshlp ln the fall of 1989.
When he wanted to come back
and get involved with soccer
once again. c.allaghan went to
OCC. He spoke with head coach
Laird Hayes and asked him how
he was able to gain the position
he held.
Hayes. who remains the OCC
coach and is a Daily Pilot Sports
Hall of Farner. Wed Callaghan to
join his staff as a volunteer in
1999.
"I loved it." Qillaghan said. "It
wa<; fun. I just felt like It was
right, being out there coaching. I
regained that passion and that
desire co be on the field I felt my
career was cul short as a player
[because of a quadriceps tear in
1990). I still had a hunger to be
out there in the game."
In 2000, things started to fall
into place for Callaghan. A5 a
glorified assista.nt coach. he
helped guide OCC to an
improbable appearance in the
four-team state playoffs.
Hayes basically managed the
team, while c.atlaghan, and fellow
iWlstant Kevin Smith, did the
hands-on coaching.
Al.so. In 2000, Callaghan was
hired as the boys soccer coach at
CdM. Bein~ back with the Sea
Kings definitely pleased
Callaghan and fueled his
coaching passion even more.
Callagban made a name for
himself at Corona del Mar in the
Callaghan drew a red card for
trying t~ break up a tussle. He
separated the two players and
one of them. a Tustin player.
Oopped, which led to a ~card
for c.allaghan.
c.atlaghan had to sit out the
first-round OF playoff loss to
eventual division champion La
Canada.
lt was d~ja vu this season for
Callaghan. who saw one of his
players sit out the first-round
playoff game. This time. however.
the Sea Kings emerged with the
victory.
Leading CdM to the 2004 CIF
Divis.ion IJ semifinals was
definitely rewardmg.
"I love coaching," Callaghan
said. "I love being the head coach
at Corona del Mar. I tallced to a
number of people who took the
job before and they said its tough
to be successful there. But l
haven\ had any regrets. I feel like
I can relate to the students. lt's a
great expenence. I would love to
do It for the rest of my Ufe."
The 33-year-old Newport
Beach resident. who Is the latest
Daily Pilot Sports H.a1J of Fame
honoree, also coaches as an
assistant at Irvine Valley. He
works there with head coach
Martin McGrogan, for whom
Callaghan played al Corona del

Callaghan has also been
interested in becoming a
~mmwtity college head coach.
though he would not mind
staying at Corona del Mar. After
all. that's where he feels he is
