Eagles open league today
with hopes of earning
rare postseason berth.
B oys volleyball isn't the only
program turning heads this
spring at Estancia High,
where the softball team
opens its first Golden West League
campaign today as a viable contender
for the CIF Southern Section Playoffs.
Coach Marc Rodig's Eagles capped
a 6-I preleague season Monday with
an 11 ·4 win over former Pacific Coast
League rival Laguna Beach. Estancia's
vic1ories also include a 3-2 triumph
March 18 over former PCL foe Corona
del Mar.
MThe girls are
definitely excited to
be s1arting league
and I'm excited, H
said Rodig, who
remains cautiously
optimistic for a
couple of reasons.
First, the Eagles
have no1 been to
the playoffs since
BARRY 1999, the program's
only postseason FAULKNER appearance since
1992. Second. the
I I -player roster includes four
freshmen and two sophomores.
In addition to his 1eam's you1h and
dearlh of success in recent league
races. Rodig believes the Eagles will
he pressed to unseat the three
programs expected to top the Golden
Wes1 standings. Rodig believes
Wes1minster and Ocean View will be
formidable foes and he also
mentioned that other school across
town that has shifted from the PCL to
1he Golden Wes!.
More good news: The top four
teams in the seven-team league earn
automatic playoff berths.
Estancia, by the way, visits Costa
Mesa April 4 and hosts the Mustangs
May7.
•••
Rod1g believes the key to his team's
'>UC'cess has been defense, thus far,
though the emergence of freshman
pitcher Muriel Mason certainly has
been another huge plus. he said.
Other Estancia standouts include
<,ophomores Hillary Larsen and
1 lilary Ockey, as weU as senior Evelyn
Flores, who has two pitching

NBWPORI' 00AST -A give-
and·take reladon.ship is forming
on the Sage Hill School softball
team.
"They teach me and I teach
them," said first-year coach Jim
Perciyal. who bas never coached
at the high school level, but
brings a wealth of baseball
knowledge he hopes can be
trarisferred to a Sage Hill team
·that lUJS a blend Qf returners
along with. a wealth of new-
~mers. Percival 8feY! up playing
baseball in his hometown of Des
Moines, Iowa. and went <Jn to the
University of Iowa. where he was
an outfielder.
In his short time woddng with
the lightning. Percival has no·
ticed some differences between
softball and baseball.
"I've been 0 for 4 on base run·
ning decisions," he said with a
laugh. "You don't send the runner
automatically on a ball hit to the
outfield in softball r would say
there is less than a 50% chance of
that runner scoring on a hard-hit
ball to the outfield."
Sophomore catcher Jessica
Torina will be the -one receiving
those throws from the outfield
while attempting to throw out
runners, which Percival believes
she can do very well.
Around Torina will be a de·
fense anchored by sl)onstop and
leadoff hiner Alexa Shitanishi, a
sophomore. Joining Sh.itanishi on
the infield will be three freshmen:
Debbie Yoder-Lee at thlrd base.
Meagan M<.-CUUough at first and
Allison Gonzalez at second.
Freshmen Katie McK.itterick
and Ouistina Mainero join
sophomore Vickie Gutierrez in
the outfield.
Freshman Catherine Dailey
(No. 3 hiner) and junior Katrina
Redelsheimer will take hold of
the pitching duties. Redelsheimer
is Pen.ival's maiJ1 weapon in the
circle.
"Dailey is a tremendous
pitcher for us," Percival said. "She
pitches the whole game and does
a great job. She has an effective
changeup. Offensively, she may
be our best player. She has a con·
sistent and compact swing with
solid. line-drive contact." Dailey
went 4 for 4 in Sage's first game.
But Percival, who saw the W"dllt
ad for a Sage Hill softball coach in
the Daily Pilot last October and
acted on it. cautions that Redel·
sheimer will have to earn the

"lf Katrina doesn't pitch, she is
capable of playing any position
well,· Percival said.
Sophomore Jessica ,Simon, Re·
becca Gordon and junior Ambre
Smith (not a misspelling) can
play both outfield and the infield.
"Our goal is to make solid con-
tact with the ball and put it in
play," said Percival when asked if
he thinks the team relies more on
its power, or the ability to manu·
facture runs. "I think people who
might not take Sage seriously will
be surprised this year. We have a
great deal of talent wich experi-
enced and skilled softball play·
ers. ..

and Yoder-Lee played on Sage
Hill's basketball team that made
the CIF Southern Section Divi-
sion lY·A Playoffs for the first
time in the program's second sea-

played on Sage Hill's tennis team
that made it to the Clf Division V

Minimali st ... sty le . pieces de light colle ctors, __ _
A fter brief periods of
Victorian, F.dwardian,
Art Nouveau,
Craftsman, Art Deco and
Federalist revival styles,
designers sought to find the
· essential quality in their
pieces. They pared down all
the excess in colors and form,
creating the ·minimalist'
style, known today as
Mkl-Century Modem.
The furniture and
decorative pieces of the
MJd-C.entury Modem
movement are highly
regarded and among the
honest sellers at auctions and
antique stores.
The look is unmistakable -
simple geometrics, soft
curves, light woods -the
absence of anything
superOuous.
Perhaps the most famous
mimes from the mo\rement are
Otarles and Ray P.ames, a
husband and wife team who
designed everything from
buildings to toys. Their most
recognizable contribution is
the ·shell" chair, a one-piece
molded plastic seat with
simple metal or chromed legs.
As with aJJ of their designs, the
shell chair lines perfectly fit
the contours of a seated
person. The sheU chairs in fine
condition can be found
starting at $175 each.
Examples of P.a,mes lounge
ch~ (especially with
onomans) can bring over
$4,000.
While the Eameses were
prolific designers, collectors
also seek pieces by lsamu
Noguchi, Marcel Breuer and
George Nelson. P.ach had a
completely original style, of
•
course, but their pieces all
blend to define the
Mid-Century Modem school.
A Noguchi sofa-a
kidney-shaped foam seat with
a simple rectangular back,
covered with a solid-colored
fabric • is a masterpiece of
understated artistry. Breuer's
fabulous Wassily chair, with
its tubular frame of chromed
steel and leather slat seat and
back, is a fixture in the
Museum of Modem Art. Near
it is the famous backless
bench by Nelson, a
minimalist classic designed
for the Herman Miller
Company incorporating
simple wooden slats on
bentwood legs.
lf this style suits you, act
now ... the original pieces are
getting hard to find, and it's
unlikely prices will decrease.
