I have been a member of

What we are looking for ls
the future, and that ls 1n our
chlldren. For the past 10

have been neglected, and we
are trying to make up for that
wfth a new indoor gym and a

would be on the oisting

would be IOWldproof for

We have been uked to
drive around the school
when going to church, and I
have been dolng that Also. I
used to park on the aide of a

our new !acWty, the parking
of studenta -who go out to
their can every two hours to

the problem or more
students parking off the
school grounds should be
helped. •The expansion·
people have aigna up for ls
based on some fahe
evidenoe that the Rev. John
Huffman said there would
be no more expan5lon. What
he said was that there would
be no more exparulon

houses were purchased the
last time the church was

the planned expansion is

Newport Beach resident will

St•ve Vlr1•n
Daily Pilot
F or the past four years, Jennifer Parilla's eyes
have been seemingly ftJted on Athens,
Greece.
Ever since Parilla. a Newport Beach
resident and an Orange Coast CoUege studenr.
ftb.lshed ninth in the trampoline at the 2000
Olympics in Sydney. Aust:ralla, she vowed to get to
the 2004 Games, which begin August 13, and win a
medal
. She took one step closer to fu1fllllng her goal by
winning the United States' Otymplc team trials for
the trampoline at San Jose State Saturday. She won
with 101.70 points and will represent her country
in the event in Athens. Each participating country
has one representative for trampoline
competition.
Parilla will be introduced as a U.S. Otympian for
the trampoline at the finals of the U.S. Olympic
gymnastic trials Saturday and Sunday at the
Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim.
·1 think I'm going to Athens with a different level
of focus than Sydney.• Parilla. 23, said after her
~g performance. "Sydney, I was just excited
to go. It was the first Olympics as a sport for
trampoline. The man who invented the
trampoline was there. And the first world
champion was there.
"In my second Olympics, I'm more looking
forward lo the competition llf\d going home wilh a medal.•
In Parllla's case. the trials seemed to have been
just a formality. She's the U.S. champion and she's
also responsible for qualifylng the United States
for trampoline competidon for the 2004 Olympics.
Parilla, who was the first U.S. women's
trampoline Olympian in 2000, won her fifth
ll'ltional all-around trampoline dlle at the U.S.
t:hampionships in Nashville, Tenn., June 5.
Parilla also qualifted the U.S. for a position in
the 2004 Olympics by placing 16th at the 2003
hnpoUne World champk>nlhipe Oct. 27 in

•alao her boyfriend.
' Parilla used to have coaches who would need
!her to train outside of California. and sometimes
, in another country. But Rangel provided the
. opponunlty for Parilla to stay dose to home.
Rangel bas been t:ralnJ.ng with Parilla for the past
five years. For the past year, he has been coaching
her.
Rangel said his bond with Parilla was based on
friendship and that aspect remains. As Parilla was
preparing for the national championships a
1month ago, Rangel wu there for her in her time of
,need.
1 Parilla sprained her ankle last month, but .
•Rangel never worried.
: •My Je8ciion was, 'You'll be fine.' • Rangel said. '•rve seen aprained ankles before.·
ParWa. with the help of a local training facility,
Pro Sports Physical, came back strong. She worked
wlth Lee Peddnl and built her way back to full
strength.
1be motivation she acquired from the 2000
Games kept her going throughout her
, rehabWtation. Rangel also encouraged her.
• "Our goal bu always been not only to make the

Raider mystique and a

Rick Devereux
Daily Pilot
Instead of being in the happiest place
on earth Tuesday, Andre SommerM!ll
was at one of the meanest places on
earth.
SommerseU, chosen 255th in the NFL
draft by the Oakland Raiders, was
scheduled to be a VIP guest of Disney·
land and Disney's California Adventure
for being Mr. lrrelevanr. the last man se·
lected in the NFL draft. Instead, the 6-
foot-2, 235-pound defensive end from
Colorado State was ln Oakland for a
mandatory minJ·camp. He will 8y back
today in time for the 6 p.m. Lowsman
Th>phy Banquet at the Newport Mani·
Ott.
SommerseU, who went to F.standa
High as a freshman and sophomore and
played for Fountain Valley as a junior
and senior, Is expected to be an outside
linebacker for the Ra.ldera.
"The experience of maldng plays at
that position as opposed to malcing
plays at defensive end will definitely be
a transition," fonner Fountain Valley
Coach George Berg said. •eut as far u
effort and attitude and willlngne55 to
make the play, he'll have all thaL •
It will be an uphill banle for Sommer-
sell to even make the ftnaJ roster be-
cause the Raiders, switching to a 3-4
alignment under new defensive coordi-
nator Rob Ryan, have plenty of line-
baclcers on the roster.
SommerseU will also have to make an
adjustment in his attitude in order to fit
In with the Raider mystique.
"He was always a funny guy,• Foun-
tain Valley teammate Ouis Neilson said.
"He's always fi'iendty to everybody.
Everybody Weed (Sommersell) on the
team.·
The advice given by members of the
Raider Nation on how Sommersell could
make a good Impression contrasted the
soft·spoken nature of the man raised in

staff his competitive splrlt. but Georgia
Felix. SommerseU's mother, doesn't
think her son has that type of penonal-
ity.
"He's always been laid back.• she said.
