Uve entertainment and dancing. tn May, the
Planning Commiss.ion granted the Mariners

condltions set by the city, and they requested
the hearing be continued so they can review
a long list of calls for service Newport Beach
police said have been made at or near the
club m the last year.
WHAT rr MEANS
Some council members seemed skeptical
about increasing the allowed capacity when
· club traffic and patrons are a source of
' complaints now. However. no residents
turned up to oppose the appeal. The council
will revisit the is.rue at a July 13 meeting.

WHAT rT ME.ANS
Design work can begin on the three-part

estimated $8. 7 million. Whether all of that
will be built remains to be seen, however.
Mayor 1bd Ridgeway questioned designing a
project when there Isn't enough money to
build It, but the Newport Coast Advisory
Committee has said they wanted to include
the library in the design and they might try to
raise private funds to make up the funding
shortfall.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
BUDGET
The board or trustees adopted
the Speda1 Education local Plan
Area budget for
2003-04. The
district acts as its
..,...,_ own agency to
handle peciaJ
education Issues.
WHAT IT MEANS
The state requires each local
special education agency to
adopt its annual budget for the
past year.
The state also mandates
services that must be provided
for special education students. lf
the costs cannot be covered by
stale funds or grants, it
encroaches on the district's
general fund.
This year, the district received
downright wrong-headed.
•••
Last night, the work of my
stepson, Erik Patterson, was on
display on both coasts. While his
new play, "Red Light, Green
Ught" was selling out at the
Theatre of Note in Los Angeles,
Erik was in New York to take part
in a staged reading before an
nudJence of his peers. And I'm
feeling loo much pride to let It
pass without recognition here.
Erik Is seven years out of New·
port l larbor HJgh School and
three years out or Occidental
College. He switched Crom acting
to playwriting in his senior year

TENTATIVE BUDGET
The board approved the
2004·05 all-funds ten1ativc
budget The state
requires that all
districts adopt a
tentative budget by
June 30 that
projects to the year ahead.
• WHAT IT MEANS
The proposed budget is
balanced, and the district Is
projecting a 4.6% cash reserve at
the end of next year, above the
state's required 3%. Its tentadve
budget is based on the prior
year's budget and projections for
the coming year.
Because of a deal struck
between the governor and
public education officials, the
district has a fairly good idea of
what funds they will see in the
year to come, said Paul Reed,
assistant superintendent of
shakers or New York theater Is
priceless. Meanwhile, the same
play -well-reviewed by local
critics -Is halfway through Its
run in Los Angeles, Thursdays
through Sundays.
HJs mother and I got a close
look at Erik's commitment to his
craft last week when he came
home to do his laundry and got a
call that hJs leading man in Los
Angeles was suddenly and seri·
ously Ill and couldn't go on the
following night. Erik shut himself
in a room and memoro..ed the
lines in a single day. then did
three Oawless performances un·
til lhe stand-in was ready to take
over.
His mother Is representing the
family ln New York this week. and
I'm following events -by choice
-vicariously by phone and e·
mall I've seen the play here, of
course. and I marvel at the un·
canny ear for dialogue and depth
and substance that F.riJc has
somehow acquired in jusl 26
years. And J wonder at whal the
years ahead are going to produce.
Erik's visJon Is much darker
than that of David Brooks, but
they share one powerful leaven·
lng agent: h umor, mined from
the frequent absurdities of hu·
man behavior. No matter which
pole it comes from, humor can
offer a safe and useful bridge to
connect segments of a polati.1,ed

UCI incident showcases

The most dlstwbing aspect of the

Jewish advococy groups morph into
purveyors of and-Muslim hate and
&hlil4 for right-wing ememistA.
Clllfomia Muslims were dismayed
when the American Jewish Coogress
falsely claimed that the lslamJc
graduates planned to wear stoles
lndlcating support for terrorlsm. We
were slekened when the
And·Defamatlon League distributed a
news release referring to the lsfamic
dedamtion of £a.Ith, or •shahada, •as
an "exprcs.'lion of hate" that Is
"offensive to Jewish Students..•
The shahada, ·there is no god but
God and Muhammad Is the
Messenger of God," is the core
Muslim belief in the oneness of God
and is one of the •five plllars· of
Islam. No person can be a Muslim
without believing in the shahada.
When someone accepts (slam, we say
they •take shahada" (Ironically, the
Jewish dedaratfon or faith, the Shem.a
Ylsrael, slmilarty states: •Hear 0

This particular conspiracy theory
began. as most do, with a Ue spread
on the Internet. E.arlier this month.
right-wing extremists began claiming
that Muslim students at UCI planned
to wear stoles bearing the word
"shahada •They mistranslated
"shahada" as the Arabic word for
suicide bomber.
As the controversy spread from
internet hale slles to right-wing
media outlets, few lslam·bashers
bothered to mention that the stoles
did not in fact bear the word shahada,
they bore the sbahada Itself. TI1ey
also forgot to mention that. aJong
with the declaration of £a.Ith, the
stoles bore the Arabic phrase. "God,
increase my knowledge."
The Jewish leaders pounced on the
issue when It hit the legitimate media
Anti-Defamation League
representatives handed out thelr
news release attacldng the shahada at
a press conference held by the
Muslim graduates to say their toles
were an expression of pride In Islam
and had nothing to do with
Palestinlan suicide bombers.
Five members of American Jewish
Congress confronted. wme wuuJd say
intimldated, Muslim srudents at the
UCI graduation ceremonies. (lmagine
lf a Muslim group sent Its members 10
confront Jewish graduates who wore
yarmulkes or stoles hearing the
Sberna Ytsrael.)
Perhaps the leaders of both groups
hould read about other events that
took place as they were demonlzlng
the linguistic essence of Islam.
On Friday, MusUms in the Tumpa
suburb or Lutz. Pia., found the words
"Kill all Muslims" scrawled on the
interior of their vandallud
community center. On Saturday, a
Florida newspaper reponed that the
FBI ls investigating threats against a
Olarlone Harbor mosque. Last
month, three Miami l.s1amlc centers
were vandalized.
Incidents targeting mosques and
lslamlc centers have occurred
recently across America. For example.
a man was arrested for threatening an
FJ Paso. Ttxas. Islamic center. Also In
Thxaa. an anon~ was arrested
al the tcene of a fire at a Muslim
business in San Antonio, and vandals
aaawted racist graffiti on the Interior

In May, unknown arsonlsta torched
