CURIOSITIES
What do
you know
about your
Uncle Sam?
I s there anything more
patriotic? I say there is not.
Some holidays are
complicated. Some are a little
V'c1,gue. But the Fourth ofjuly is
simple in its origin and crystal
dear in its
intent.
It's
America's
bi.rthday! Am I
honored to
have my
column fall
right smack
plunk on the
Fourth of July?
Please. I am
way. way PETER
beyond BUFFA
honored. I am
humbled and awestruck and
almost at a loss for words, but
unfortunately for you. not quite.
Do you know what the chances
are of the Fourth of July falling on
a Sunday? 1ltree hundred
sixty-six. divided by 12. times
seven, then you have to, well, let's
just say the odds are really. really
small. ,,
'lltis being Am erica's day of
days. I have nothing better to
offer you than the story of where
your uncle named Sam came
from. in all his
red-white-and-blue glory. and Iii~
birthday. which is this very day.
Dur.ing the War of 1812, which .
took place early in the early
1800s. a meat packer in Troy, N.Y.,
named Sam Wilson had a
contract to s"upply the American
troops with rations. In those days.
meat was dried. salted and
shipped in barrels. which I
suspect was every bit as nac;ty as
it sounds. Each barrel was
stamped with a "U.S." mark. and
the big joke among the troops
was " ... tltis meal courtesy of
Uncle Sam Wilson."
Apparently. if didn't take much
to make troops laugh in 1812.
Sam Wilson was a tall. slender
man with a white beard who
always wore a top hat, which was
very common at the time.
Supposedly. Wilson was the
inspiration for a number of
cartoons at the time depicting the
U.S. going toe-to-toe with the
Brits.
Over the years, the Uncle Sam
character was decked out in
ever-increasing red. white and
blue. eventually from head to toe.
The version we're most familiar
with is the stem -looking Uncle
Sam from the World War I and
World War II recruiting posters.
pointing his finger and saying. "I
want you."

MAKING IT SAFE
It 's not like we 're

Orgill. the MVP of the JC state
basketball tournament when the Pirates
swept to the title in 1979.
Yardley's son, Rob, was a teammate of
Orgill's the previous year and Orgill. a
business partner of Rob, recalls the
traits which put the younger Yardley in
a class by himself.
"When Rob was a sophomore. he was
a second-team player, but he hustled. II
drove us crazy." said Orgill. who had
been a leading starter on every team he
ever played for.
"'I le would run and fly into the stands

Orgill continued. "lie wa<; always the

One might surmise it's a matter of
genes. or DNA. because no one can
remember a shot Rob's dad, George.
didn't feel was there for the taking as he
broke Hank Luisetti's single-season
scoring record at Stanford. George
Yardley later became the first player to
ever score over 2,000 point.s in a season
when with the Detroit Pistons.
George Yardley is presently battling
Lou Gehrig's Disease and was known as
the original "Bird,· who shot hls free
throws underhanded while playing the
game in the era of 1946-1961.
Orgill said anolher nickname applies:
Generous George.
"Even at the very beginning (when
o~ and Rob Yardley began a fire
protection business on a major scalel,
he had no stock in the !wholesale
distributionl company, but he had the
authority and made the decisions,"
Orgill said.
"He provided the opponunity and
the finances and I did the blue-collar
work.
"He gave you the parameters, then let
you go and never looked over your
shoulder."
Yardley has always insisted a Ughter
side of life prevail at his business
meetings and, according to Orgill,
"Would do anything for a joke. If
anyone could bring to the table a good
joke, it was better than a solution. It
would.Jnake the day and he would IO

but he did not ll·I it stop him
fro m finishing the trnining
session. Heese a lso s aid Pcirsol
is ready for the Olympic trials,
but he has yet lo peak.
"He will swirn real well al the
trials," llecsc said. "Bui I don't
believe those will be hi.-. fa stest
times this summer. I think he
will be very. very fast at the
Olympics."
Peirsol has used his
experience this past spring as
motivation for the rest of the
year. He battled through
nausea at the NCAA
championships March l7·, but
still came through lo break his
own short-course world
record. I le won the 200 h a<:k in
I :50.64 in a 25 ·meter pool.
Olympic competition uses a
50-meter pool, known as long
course.
In March of 200l, Pcirsol set
the long-course world record
of I :55. I 5, which he will
attempt to break in the l004
Games.
Making a splash
When Pcirsol began
swimming, he was eager to
become a freestyler, said Brian
• Pajer, a coach with the Irvine
Novaqualics when Peirsol.was
9. Pajer asked Peirsol to try
other strokes. When Peirsol
performed the backstroke.
Pajer noticed something
special.
·He was comfortable and
really coordinated for a guy
that age," said Pajer, who is the
head coach of the UC Irvine
swim teams. "Ile had a very
natoraJ feel for It. At his very
fi rst meet, he broke the
Southern California record In

Matthews, who will be a

at either Corona del Mar, Mater

strung together an impressive
ll -match winning strt'ak, in ·

Matthews had never mt.'t be-

"He was staying a rnuple feel
behind the baseline, so I was
able to dink some drop shots in
to get him running all over the

Peirsol continued to break
records. When he turned 13,
Dave Salo, the Novaquatics
head coach, began to talk
about the Olympks with him.
Salo told Peirsol he could make
the Olympics and did his hest

"I felt comfortable projecting

confidence."
Pe irsol displayed h is
confidence throughout the
2000 (lames and it has
continued to build. In WOO. he
hecame the youngest swimmer
to go under two minutes in the
200 back. Truth be told, the
then-lecn·aged Pcirsol
motivated Krayzelburg in
Austra lia.
"Absolutely. he pushed me,"
said Kray.lelburg, who is now •
training with Salo and will be
competing in the Olympic
trials. "Of course I was aware of
him. lie was dropping seconds
every time he went in the
water. I le is tremendously
special. In 2000, there was no
ques tion, he was out there to
win. I le was no kid."
Finding motivation
Peirsol has emerged from the
shadow of Kray1,elburg and
wants to remain the king of the
backstroke. Along with that
comes endorsements, which
wilJ continue to grow if Peirsol
wins one or more medals at the
2004 Olympics.
This year, In addition to
signing with Nike, Peirsol has
appeared on Good Morning
America and Cold Piua, the
