THE VERDICT
Beached sub-career happily caught in a magazine
I see Spurts Illustrated has one~
again focused on The Wedge. Thirty
years ago, the magvlne decided to
do an article on the place. I had recently
written a book about bodysurflng. and
they contacted me. asking If I would
agree to appear in the article.
Agree? What red-blooded American
boy wouldn' agree to be in Sports
Olustrated. especially one who was so
small that he was on the C swtm learn
all through high school, who played golf
with his wife only to Inevitably hear.
"You're away, Bob.• This was my big
chance, and there was a certain amount
of poetic justice about It. I had been

nevertheless.
Badt In the early
days, bod)'5wfing
was the water sport
of choice, and o ne of
the pmrder lpOta
was the Balboa pier.
The waves were so
good then that on a
big day, If you took
off and looked to
your right, you would
see water running down the sudace of
the pier. Look straight ahead, and you
had a good view or the Pavilion. When
'
they dredged the harbor, however, they
had to put ;ill that sand som e place.
]hey dumped it all along the peninsula
and ln the process destroyed the Balboa
pier for surfing. Nothing was left but a
shore break. However, the same sand
that ruined the pier for surfing created
another surf spot.
Before the dredging at what we call
The Wedge. a rock groin ran at right
angles to the west jetty. making it
lmposslbl~ to surf there. Waves coming
along the jetty smashed into the groin.
Anybody trying to surf would have been
killed. However, they dumped enough
sand there that the groin was covered
and The Wedge, known u the Point in
those days, wa<; born.
'Ille first man to surf The Wedge, to
my knowtedge. was Tagg Atwood. Tagg
was o ne of those people who didn't
know rear. When he was dying. I asked
him lf he'd ever been afraid. He gave me
a perplexed look. -or what?" he saki. A
friend like that makes for adventure.
One day, when a swell was running
and we were moaning the demise of
ourfavorite surf spot, Tqg said, -1
know! Let's go check out the Point.· Off
we trekked, none or us thinking we were
going lo do anything but look at the
place. We got there, and those big.

dear-cut, open-and-shut case. Al the
very leas1, the statutory rape law was
transgressed more than o nce by
these defendants who·are now free
on bail.
I can1101 believe what I have read i11

she is to be abused even more? II is so

What about the parents of the boys?

Whether a parent is a deputy sheriff

I was very disappointed
in the letters published
In your paper Thursday

supported retrial of the three
defendants. Many readers
expressed a view critical of
the criminal defense
