are watching wildfires empting in parts of
Southern California and keeping an eye
on areas here that could rose a risk.
With temperatures climbing consis·
tently, there is always the risk of a brush
fire, especially in Nc•wpon Coast, which
has large areas of growth with high-end
homes in gated communities not too far
away.
Firefighters arc con.'ltantly attending
training programs and sessions to equip
themselves better to Oght 01ese fires, said
Newport Beach Fire Car t. Mike Ybarra,

dozen students enrolled this
summer in economics and
Ame rican government. the
school district's first online
courses. And despite the form at,
which many worry lacks the in-
spiration or personal interac-
tion. Brent is more motivated
and open about his schoolwork
than ever before.
"He's been really good," she
said. "He goes on !the com -
puter! and loves to share with
me what he's doing. lhey have

he's pretty passiunate about
politics already at 17 years old.

are a pilot pmgram for the New-

"I never had many (health!
problems.· Coon said. "I've been
extremely blessed. I have had very good
health. I have very good genes. I've
been exercising and running for a long
time. I really enjoy it I've done It 90 ,
long that I'm not happy when I don't do
it. I don't want to miss a workout"
When Coon ls not running, she trains
at a local gym. She uwaUy exercises
15-20 minute. for her cardJovuc:ular

Escher, who gained respect on
defense because teams usually
did not throw to his side, helped
lead Newport I larbor to a
Sunset League title in the fall of
1973. He lenered in football and
track and field in rus final two
years at Newport. He received
interest from several
universities, but f$cher wanted
to go to UCLA.
Dick Tomey, who went on to
coach Ariwna, was a defensive
assistant with UCLA at the time.
Tomey told Escher to
play al Golden West,
where the Rustlers ran a
defense similar to the
Bruins. I le wanted to
play there for two years •
and hopefully receive a
