Continued from Al
Van Hecks, I lank Hornsveld and
Nico Van Ot!r Veer. grandson of
Piel Rrdlldsen. who protected
the Van Beeks, taJJced about
those days they can't fathom
having gotten through.
It all started in June 1942,
when 1-lory Van Beek received
her summons from the Germans
to head lo a "camp." which in
post·Wdr days gained nmoriety
a'> the "concentration camp."
Van Beck had gone grocery
shopping that day. She had to
be<..'.<luse Jews were allowed to
shop only on certain days
between 3 and 5 p.m.
On her wcty back home. she
stood on Lhe bank of lhe RJver
Eem. 1 ler heart trembled under
lhe sLar of David she wore on her
blouse, the star that marted her
for evenruaJ annihilation. She
took one look at the beautiful
landscape and picturesque
Amersfoort, the town by the river
where she had grown up. In that
moment, the beauty she had
known all her life seemed
doaked in indescribable
ugliness.
"With the summons l'n my
pocket mid a heavy heart, I stood
in front of the river thinking
about killing myself." she said. "I
felt hopeless.·
That was when a tall man
riding his bicycle by the river
called out to her.
"I le ac;ked me. 'What the hell
are you doing here?'" Van Beek
said. "I le told me to rip the star
off my hlouse and follqw him.·
The man Van Beek foUowed
without argument that day was
Piel Brandsen. a dynamic,
daredevil Dutchman who
opposed the Nazi regime and
worked underground to protect
lhe oppressed. Brandsen took
Van Beck into his home and
promised to protect her.
Flory and her boyfriend. Felix
Van Beek. were married in
Brandsen's house becaUlle the
man was a staunch Catholic and
didn't want them living together
under his roof unwed, she said.
Brandsen had the courage, the
will and the resources to resist
the ~r of the Nam. He
published an underground
newspaper called Parool, which
means "give yow word" In
Dutch. He built bomb shelters
and secret passageways ln his
home.
lhat came in handy when the
Van Beeks had to escape after
Gestapo officials arrested
Brandsen ln 1944 and sent him
away to a concentradon camp.

1 lornsveld's heroism saved his
family and the Van Beeks when
the Na7Js launched an attack in
Amersfoort. With the rest of the
group huddled in an air·raid
shelter, the Homsveld boys ran
over to a nearby lumberyard and
returned with a circus wagon
and an old horse. II was in that
wagon that they Oed lo safely to
the home of Rib and Henle

news that the Nvjs had been
defeated and lhe war was over.
They had been liberated.
The Van Beeks moved to the
United States in 1948. They
sponsored Hank and tlls brother,

got into the construction

"After all these years, it's still

she said. "Our whole life seems

Homsveld said he doesn't
know how he did what he did.
"Sometimes, I sit back and
thi.nk about all this.• he said. "I
wonder how we survived. I
guess. becalise we were young.
We had the will to survive."

the war with his wife Jacquellen

My friends, Eva and Rachel. joined
