Street-widening project narrowly focused, some say
An open house tonight will allow residents
to comment on a Newport Boulevard plan

COSTA MESA -An environ·
mental report on the potential
widening of Newport BouJevard
says the pmjccl wiU have mini·
maJ negative effect on the en-
trance to the city, but some resi·
dents reel the project will not
accomplish the touted henefits.
The proposed project calls
for Improving the traffic and
pedestrian conditions on New-
port Boulevard from 17th to
19th streets hy adding a fourth
northhound lane throughout
the area and adding a fourth
southhound lane from the end
of the Costa Mesa Freeway to
the intersection with Broadway.
In November, the Downtown
and· F.astside lransportatlon Ad
Hoc Committee gave its bla.,.
Ing to the widenint(. although
many committee members had
mixed feelin~ about the
project. Tonlght. an open house
will be held for residents to
comment on the project and
tJ1c environmental report.
1ne report sa~ 1wo on-street
parking spaces will be lost with
the widening. and nearby resi·
dcntial neighborhoods might
see more traffic during con·
structlon, which wiJI he about
five to six months, project man-
ager Da~ Sorge said. Jn addi-
tion to improvin~ traffic. other
pluses proml!led by the city are
decreasing the number of acci-
dents and promoting a man-
ageable downtown area.
Some residents, like Tom
P.pn, who wa.s on the ad hoc
committee and Is a Newport·
Mesa Unified School District
board member. said the project
will be a waste of time and
money.
H'rhe project would 1101 im·
prove traffic much , hut it would
cost a lot of money and dcterio·
rate our duwntown," Egan said.
The prospect of wideni11~
Newport Boulevard has beer
controversial In the past he·
cause some merchants in the
area are concerned It wiJI add tn
the area's congestion. thereby
deterring shoppers from fre .
quentlng the shops.
Tum SulJ'o, who was chair-
man of the committee and is on
the board of directors of the
Olamber of Commen:e, said
better circulation In the project
area will mean more customers.
"Nobody ever likes more trnf·

those people that are just tryint(

Films fo llow partisan lines
but maybe not always facts
As the film "Fahrenheit 91 11 " now
sits poised to enter the glorified
staws of "blockbuster," I can't help
but think of the irony of that other
film . whose audience -not unlike
"9111" -divided itself along
partisan lines of liberal and
conservative.
What I find of inlerest is the fact
tha1 the majorily of the people who
condemn "9/ 11 .. as being historically
inaccurate are many of the same
people who genuflect in reverence to
the film "The Passion orThe Olris1"
and its perceived historical accuracy.
I'm no theologian. and I may be
going out on a limb here, bur I'm
guessing "The Passion of The Olrist"
most likely contains le ss factual
information than does "9/ 11," if not
only 111 part due to the time
discrepancy and method of
report ing. Don't get me wrong; faith
and myth play a very important role
in the human experience. but
unfortunately, when it comes 10 a
certain president using faith and
myth with zealous invocation as a
reason to go to war, sorry. but it just
doesn't ny.

Meetings about church

ABOUT
THIS SERIES
Red flags went up following a spike in
coaching vacancies at Costa Mesa High.
including all of its high-profile sports.
After a three-week investigation by the
Daily Pilot, today we conclude with the
third in a three-part series to find out why
this is happening in our community, and,
if you were the parent of a potential
student-athlete et Mesa. wouldn't you
want to know?
From April 3 to July 23, Costa Mesa
endured tile firing of its football coach,
Dave Perkins, along with the
resignations of the basketball. baseball
and track and field coaches, as well as
the end of Perkins' post as the boys
athletic director.
The Daily Pilot conducted interviews
with Costa Mesa coaches.
administration, as well as district and city
officials shortly after the school
announced the resignation of its boys
athletic director, Perkins, on July 1.
Since then, Costa Mesa fired Perkins
as its football coach, the Daily Pilot
learned.Friday night, forcing us to make
11th-hour wholesale changes.
This series entails why there has been
chaos at Costa Mesa during the past four
months. Bob Serven, who is now an
assistant with the Mater Dei boys
basketball team, said he resigned. in
part, because of the lack of summer pay
fo r coaches and his frustrations with the
joint-use agreement for fields.
In January, Perkins was told to resign
as athletic director because he was so
adamantly against the joint-use
agreement and because he took
exception to the payment process to
coaches, he said.
The series began with Sunday's
lntroductory story on what is happening
in Costa Mesa's athletic department
followed by Monday's focus on the
joint-use agreement. Today's concluding
story concentrates on the topic of
summer pay for coaches.
