A THREAT
TO DEMOCRACY
'The democratic
tradition in the United
States is to allow
third-party candidates
to be heard. A few
times, minor parties
have taken over from
a major party. The
last was the
Republicans, who
took over from the
Whigs. But even more
importantly, if the
ideas are sound, they
are adopted by the
major parties as th eir
own. Unless you give
minor parties a voice,
democracy will be
downsized.'
S ilence is unsettling for
Libertarian U.S. Senate
candidate Jim Gray.
The Libertarian Orange
County Superior Court judge
aclmowledges"that he is a
minor-party candidate. bur that

lacks legitim'acy, su bstantive
arguments or even significance
in a democracy, he said. On the
contrary. he says h e is a serious
candidate, with press ing issues

u ltimately, national stage.
That is why a Los Angeles
Superior Court judge's d ecision
Tuesday that bars him from a
U.S. Senate race debate.
sponsored by the League of
Women Voters of California,
troubles him.
Reformed drug laws, reducing
government intrusion into
people's lives and a more
international military force in
Iraq are a few of the issues he
said he can bring to a debate
with Democratic incumbe nt
U.S. Sen . Barbara Boxer a.ncJ
Republican challe nge r Bill
Jones.
But with the judge's ruling,
Gray will be left on rhe fringe of
the debate. at best 10 appear

OCC RECONSTRUCTION
Pirates pitch is perfected
OCC soccer field has
undergone serious
renovation s to switc h it
from worst to first .

David Bowie once sang that time

It seem s the Orange Coast College
athletics department has used the
time s1nce receiving more than $14
million from bond Measure C money
to run wild on improving its facilities.
With all of the ch-ch-changes go-

house is being built, a new dance
floor has been installed, the softball
and ba..eball fields wiJI get a new look

construction wiU be soccer.
"The SOl'lt~r lield

since then." OCC
men's coach l .aird

huge crown on it. The ball never
bounced on it a ny organi1.ed way. II

will go."

Barbara Bond, who has been the

history, viewed the constmction as
long overdue.
"Even though we· had two of the
best SO('Cer teams in the state. ·we had
the worst facilities bar none in onr
conference,'' Bond ~aid. "We've been
talkmg abotll for several years redo·
ing the field ."
The field has been flattened and
enlarged to 120 yards long and 80
yards wide. which will help the OCC
players in vanf)u11 ways.
"That crown has been Retting more
and more pronounced." said llm
Carnett. the college's community re-
lations officer. "All of that has been
taken off. It wasn't very effective for
soccer and running downhill was
k.ind of dangerous for the soccer
players."
Hayes saic.l , "Because of the1crow11,
lthe field! played more narrow be-
fore. Now it's almost as flat as a pan·
cake. And it going to l 20-80. Most
premier leagues shoot for th ose di-
mensions. The new field will give us a
bit of a home-field advantage."
Hayes said he fi rst rallied for Field-
