Drop the Steel
signature case
A s the courts have
moved on. so
should Michael
Szkaradek:.
Costa Mesa
Councilman Ouis Steel made
mistakes when he signed
election n omination papers for
a blind woman in 1998 and
when he allowed a man to sign
the 2000 papers for his wife.
There's no doubt that in these
decisions. he erred on the side
of bad judgment.
Last week:. an appellate court
threw out Szkaradek:'s appeal
because he had filed it too late.
A technicality, yes, but also a
sign. The courts will not remove
Steel from office for his
mistakes. It would have
happened by now.
Steel, elected in November
2000, has less than a year and a
half until his four-year term
ends.
So Szkaradek. himself a
former City Council candidate,
needs to move on. If he really
thinks Steel should be thrown
out of office, he should run for
the seat or encourage the voters
of Costa Mesa to make it
happen at the ballot box if Steel
runs in November 2004.
Anyone who second-guesses
any council member's existence
on the City Council can try to
do something about it. This
nation allows its voters this
chance every election. The
residents of Costa Mesa can also
make a run for the seat so they
can give a City Council seat a
whirl.
At the same time, Steel, if he
should run for reelection, has
learned a lesson and will more
than likely be more responsible
with his nomination papers
next time around. And
Szkaradek is very welcome to
check those out. too. lf those,
too, have problems, then history
wiJI prove that Steel hasn't
learned a lesson and should
suffer the consequences.
But until then, Steel made
mistakes that the court has
decided are not worth pursuing
punishments for. Everyone
needs to accept those decisions
and stop wasting taxpayers'
money and the courts' time.

Senior housing proJect is
worthy of resident support
By Steve Brombere
I n serving as a mediator and

Barger of Eanh Resources Foundation in

affordable housing project at Lower
Bayview. A little history is important
Lower Bayview is that area off of
Jamboree and Back Bay Drive as you
enter Newpon Dunes. Upper Bayview is
right above thal on the northwest comer
of Jamboree Road and East Coast
Highway. Many of you may remember
this area where a Shell Gas Station
exis1ed for many years. The city is
required to supply affordable housing.
and we chose to do it in the form of
senior affordable housing (very Newport
Reach-style apartments}. Affordable
housing is a state requiremenL Senior
housing works well for us. as 20% of our
population is over the age of 65.
Unfortunately. our city is pretty well buih

2000. I was assigned to the Affordable
Housing Task Force Committee, and this
comminee has worked diligently toward
achleving a senior housing project at
Lower Bayview. All was going extremely
well as this was truly a win-win progJam
for everyone. Separately, we were
worlcing on deveJoping a view park on
IJpper Bayview. That is, a combination of
natural plantings, limited turf graM and
minimal grading. lt would be a "pretty
park" as opposed to a vacant lot This
would not include buiJdings. gym type
equipment, swings or anything like that
We were then given the opdon of
combining the two projects into one.
That is, to develop the view park and the
senior housing as a project which would
compliment the two concepts. By doing
this, we were able to include walking
trails. a bike path and, quite frankly. a
very beautiful setting. which would not
only be appreciated by everyone In the
city, but most significantly, it was
enwonmentally sensldve. Textbook
"win-win." So far so good.
Now. enter resident Jan VanderslooL
He was at a City Council meeting where
he heard two people say that they
wanted to have more than just natural
sage plantin~ and limited turf grass. He
became ouaaged. The City Council
never made a decWon to change its
original plan; we just said we would look
at it. 1ltis City Council goes out of its way

I lost all my stripes that I had. I was a

through boot camp all over again at
age 23. Going against 18-year-olds, I
was the old man. From that point. I
went to the school of infantry. I went to

Costa Mesa's Day

bittersweet.
Steve Vlr1•n

NORWALK -After winning her sec·
ond straight state dtle in the high jwnp,
Costa Mesa High senior Sharon Day
cried. But those weren't tears of joy.
Day cleared 5 feet, 10 inches on her
first anempt to edge freshman Mindi
Wiley of Sonoma and became a state
champion in the finals of the OF State
crack and field cham-
pionships Saturday in
front of 11 ,862 at Cer·

Day did not clear 6-0,
and was upset with
herself. So goes the life
of an ulcra-competitive athlete. 1bere
seemed only one way to describe her
second consecutive state title.
"Binenweet," said Day. who cleared
6-2 April 5, establishing herself as the
nation's best this season. "This season
has been awesome. I [achieved per-
sonaJ-best marks) twice. It's been a lot of
fun. I wish it could have been a little dif-
ferent.·
Day held back tears when talking to
reporters, shortly after stepping down
from the first-place podium. She pro·
vided a courtesy smile when a reporter
presented a comparison to the feeling
she had Saturday. When asked if Day
felt the same when the Costa Mesa High
girls soccer team won a share of the CIF
Division Ill title, Day responded with a
bit of gmse an<! frusUadon. "Very much

MBut I just didn't have It at the end.

•That's why I am so upset It felt like I
tied."
Regardless of how Day felt, the facts
remained: Day wu a champion at every
level she competed during the past
month. She owned the hJgh jump event,
winning the Golden West League, CIF
Southern Secdon Division Ill, Masters
Meet and st.ate titles.
She nearly finished second in the
high jump Saturday, but cleared 5· l 0 on
her first attempt to keep the up-and-
coming Wiley at bay. Wiley cleared 5· 1 O
on her aecando attempt. and she nearly
conquered 6·0. Day also came close to
getting pa.st 6-0 on her third and 8nal
attempt, but her "8ht heel hJt the bar.

Fstancla distance coach Olarlie

Rojas, affectionately known as.

Rojas better than anyone. The
coach and the runner share the
same birthday. they are both left·

fam of track and field Plus. they
have worked together for the past
four years.
Owing the l ,600, Appell said the
key for Rojas was to stay away
from "Mt. SACitis," their own term
that comes from Rojas' freshman
year, when he suffered from side
aches at a race at Mt. San Antonio
College and continually battled
with that pain throughout the sea-

While Day took off for her first attempt at 6-0, FeUx

who were applauding.
Said Day; "She did a victory lap? I didn't even no-

After Day slipped and did not clear 6-0 on her sec-

her advice and encour8ged her while leaning over the
railing in the stands. Eugene Day was not su.re if
Sharon had won the state dtie after the event ended.
And when he realized she dld win, he was hardly

"I'm wry upset." Eugene Day said "She lost focus.
She'• never nervous at these type of meets, so you

Rugeoe Day was still comforted by the fact that his
daughter won her second straight state championship
and was the top high jumper in the nation th.is sea-
son.
"lt's been phenomenal," Eugene Day said of
Sharon's track and field season. "She worked and
worked .. she had a whirlwind year in athletics."
Sharon Day earned MVP honors in the Golden West
League in volleyball and soccer. She was also named
offensive MVP in CIF Division Ul soccer after scoring
29 goals. and producing 24 iwlsts. She became the
Orange County Female Athlete of the Year, as deter.
mined by the county's athletic directors, May 27.
The same could be said for
Novak, who did not even qualify
for CIF last year. He finished his
season at the Pacific Coast League
finals with a 5-8 clearance. But this
year. he began to show his com-
petitive fire after winning the
Golden West League dde with a
