Unless we can cause the City of Newport Beach, the County of Orang e. and/or the U. S.Army Corps of Engineers to consider the alternative, pumping this material offshore. the dump trucks/land scrapers will begin to roll about mid-September. About 400,000 cubic yards of river bottom sediment will be dumped b_etween the rock jetties from 3 2nd Street to S6th Street in Newport Beach. This proposed dumping project is not in compliance with the EIR filed with the California Coastal Commission. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has the budget to dump this riverbed sediment offshore where it would be cleansed and returned to the beach naturally. They have chosen to take the cheaper route which is to dump the 400,000 cubic yards on the beach and push it into the surf. The water areas between the jetties will be filled in and covered over with this river bottom sediment to the top and the end of the jetties. This covering will destroy all jetty sea life. This enormous amount of sediment will cause an unknown effect on the current wave action. The p~ojected steep I 5 to I beach slope can cause a severe shore break with accompanying undertow and riptides. This will endanger our children and discourage public surfing activities. · This river bottom sediment will be screened through a 3 .. grid screen. This is not small enough to filter out broken glass, needles, sharp metal and whatever else has settled into the bottom of the river in th~ last fifteen years. The airborne adobe silt. fine. sand and dust wlll ·c...t. an unhealthy breathing environment, especially under the prevailing westerly winds. ARJ. DL'!iT M AR1'1NI PING The Dumping of Santa Ana River bottom dredged material on our beach is about to begin! The contract has been awarded. Unless we can cause the City of Newport Beach, the County of Orange. and/or the U. S.Army Corps of Engineers to consider the alternative, pumping this material offshore, the dump trucks/land scrapers will begin to roll about mid-September. About 400,000 cubic yards of river bottom sediment will be dumped between the rock jetties from 3 2nd Street to 56th Street in Newport Beach. This proposed dumping project is not in compliance with the EIR fi led with the California Coastal Commission. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has the budget to dump this riverbed sediment offshore where it would be cleansed and returned to the beach naturally. They have chosen to take the cheaper route which is to dump the 400,000 cubic yards on the beach and push it into the surf. The water areas between the jetties will' be filled in and covered over with this river bottom sediment to the top and the end of the jetties. This covering will destroy all jetty sea life. This enormous amount of sediment will cause an unknown effect on the current wave action. The p~ojected steep 15 to I beach slope can cause a severe shore break ~ith accompanying undertow and riptides. This will endanger our children and discourage public surfing activities. This river bottom sediment will be screened through a 3•• grid $Creen. This is not small enough to filter out broken glass, needles, sharp metal and whatever else has settled into the bottom of the river in the last fifteen years. Playing and coaching baseball are two things Phill ips knows much about. More than 5-0 players he has coached privarely have signed contracts with professional teams. He grew up in Garden Grove and attended La Quinta High. where ~e earned All-CIF honors for two seasons before being drafted by the Atlanta Braves. Phillips earned a scholarship to USC and was a freshman on the 1974 nal.lonal championship squad fo r legendary coach Rod Dedeaux. One of Phillips' more memorable experiences was throwing ln relief for the U.S. team that defeated Japan ln a seven·game series ln 1975, nearly a decade before baseball was contested ln the Olympics.
