One kid apparently was a repeal offender and ended up in a mJJitary school somewhere out of state. These rypes of event!> often prompted me 10 use the "teachable moment" and just sit down with the class and talk about drug and alcohol abuse. Often, I would put out the question, "How would you feel If I came to class drunk or stoned1" and then encour.i.ge brainstorming and discussion. Regularly. the kids would suggest a feeling of disappointment. of feeling cheated or angry. Eventually, they would understand that adults feel the same way-disappoinred, cheated, angry- when young people taJce advantage of their parents' trust. At both of the high schools where I spent my 26-year career, some parents openJy condoned teen drinking-Some parents rented limousines for the kids for a prom and provided booze to drink. Another bunch of parents actually rented a full-i.iz.ed bus and helped the kids load huge picnic coolers full of liquor onto the bus. Many of my chaperone assignments were school dances. which included "girls' bathroom" duty. I can't tell you how cnany girls I've seen drunk and vomiting · into the toilets. Current statistics show tJ1at the U.S. has the highest rate of teen pregnancies of all industriali1.ed nations. NAHCYN.BEU Newport Coast The Newport Beach Planning Commission should approve the request for changes 1ubmltted by St. Andrew'• church at Its next meeting on Sept. 23. By tearing down two existing buildings, digging out an underground garage. adding underground storage and reconstructing the two building•. It la being noticed as an "expansion." While certainly within the narrow meaning of the term, It Is not really an "expansion" in the sense of expanding beyo nd the existing property lines. More than 170 years ago. a French observer wrote "Democracy In America," noting among other things, the strong basts of religion that was the foundation of American democracy and the strong propensity of Americans to enter into voluntary associations tn order to accomplish many diverse projects. (At that time, Americans accomplished most of their governmental needs through local and state government). We, who are members of the congregation at St. Andrew's, are voluntarlly using our monty and time to provide Improved services to Newport Beach youth, particularly In afternoon hours that often lack adult supervision. St. Andrew's has negotiated a compromise with the neighbors reducing the plan by 24.4~ In square footage. Now, It Is time for Newport Beach officials to approve this amended project and let It co me to fruit ion. RONALD AND MARY JANE HIGBY Huntington Beach I have heard so much negative press about the St. Andrew's expansion project. I think everyone In Oiffhaven and Newport Heights needs to take a look at what Is really the traffic Issue in the neighborhood. The fact that all three schools -Newport Harbor, Ensign and Newport Heights -start and end school within 15 to 20 minutes of each other causes much more of a traffic Impact than St. Andrew's does. It Is aJso a much more dangerous slruatlon to have elem~ntary aged children competJng with first-time drivers from the high school. I would wish for the neighborhood to stop blaming St. Andrew's for all of the traffic problems. Hasn't the traffic been better over the summer?
