what contribute to the boat

Eventually, a tree. or a house,

when Hurricane Ignacio bit
the Mmcan resort town in
late August 2003 and WU
followed by Hurricane Marty

We aperlence aome of
these eJfecta in Newport

that bit our area. Remember
the storm of Dec. 6, 19971
Th.is storm actually cauaed
the harbor water levels to rise
due to heavy winds and storm
water runoff entering the bay
from storm drains.
The runoff current in the
Baa Bay caused a couple of
docb in Dover Shores to
break free, and then the docks
drlAed under the Coast
Highway bridge. The current
canied the Back Bay
navigational buoys under the
bridge and rearranged the
mooring area off of
Bayaborea. Some of you may
also remember that the Rhine

wubed up into the channel
from the cwrent This Storm
and other storms keep the
Harbor Patrol busy chasing
the broken-free boats and
picldng up navigational

Our boating weather,
however, loob good this
weekend with patchy fog and
the aaaoctated wind gusts on
the fog's leading edges,
especially ln the morning
hours. Also, you should watch
for the sea.a to possibly build

is not as simple as it first appears,
however, and the film keeps

Each time the tale is told with

moments and even bits of
whimsy in the fight scenes.
Historical pageants can be tricky

between epic and silly. A few
times, "Hero" teeters perilously
on the edge. but Yunou stays on
the epic side of the divide.
"Hero" shares many
similarities with ·erouching

in the wire effects used in the

80-yard touchdown for Brea
Olinda in the fourth quarter.
. "Our defense played very
well," Baldwin said. "We just
had a couple big turnovers
Ion offense)."
·Brea Olinda recovered a
fumble halfway through the
first quarter.
T'wo plays later, it looked as
if the Mesa defense was going
to be able to hold the Wild-
cats scoreless following a sack
and forced fumble by. Jasbir
Seewat and recovery by Jeff
Waldron.
But a defensive holding
penalty gave Brea Olinda an
automatic first down on the
2 i.. The next play, quarterback
Eric Anicich connected with
tight end Tommy Gallarda for
a touchdown.
The Mustangs received the
kickoff and put together a
niJie-play, 63-yard drive and
looked ready to tie the game.
On the first play of the second
quarter, Ryan French com-
"teted a pass in the flat to a
~elver who juked his way to
the 6-yard line, only to have
&he ball stripped out as he Illas being tack.led by Justin

;. the right tack.le for a 58-Dlrd score.
""But the Mustangs did not ---
give up or give lo.
The defense recovered a
Wildcat fumble on the Brea
Olinda 13 to start the second
half, but Mesa waa unable to
come away with any points.
The Mustangs put together
a 12-play, 65-yard drive in the
fourth quarter, capped off
with a 9-yard touchdown run
by Tyter Legg with 4:40 left In
the contest. Legg finished
with 17 carries for a team-
high 60 yards.
"I thought Legg played well,
especially considering it was
-his first time carrying [the
ball) on varsity," · Baldwin
said.
The very next play on of-
fense, Anicich threw a quick
slant to David Fullerton, who
broke one tackle and was off
to tht: races for an 80-yard
touchdown for the 21 -7 final.
"Brea has a real strong pro-
gram," as~1c;tan1 coach l:ddie
Steward said. "We gave up a
couple big playc;, but I don't
think we played too badly."
Subtract the 58-yard scam-
per and the defense held Go-
nyea to 49 yards on I 3 carries.
Legg was the leading rusher
for the Mustangs, and Jeff
Waldron finished with IOI
yards receiving on five catch-
es.
"What can you say about
Jeff?" Baldwin said. "He made
great play<; out there._"
French threw four jump
balls to Waldron, and the
tight end caught three of
them with the other noating
out of bounds. He was also
active as linebacker.
Baldwin said he was im-
pressed with the play of his
team, especially considering
the number of new players on
the varsity level. He said he
expects a jump in the level of
play when Costa Mesa plays
Corona del Mar Sept. IO at
Newport Harbor High.
WThe biggest improvement
for players is between the first
and second game," Baldwin
said.
The game showed an im·
provement in many aspects
from last year's team for Costa
Mesa.
French's 10 completions
and 148 yards through the air
would have been Mesa single-
game highs in 2003.
Waldron's 101 receiving
yards would have been the
second-best single-game per-
formance for a receiver in
2003.
"The game came down to a
couple of big turnovers,·
Baldwin said. "Those are
things that happen in foot-
ball, though."

few automotive retallen that
truly lends credence to the

it ii preciaely this aetting that
offers, through the

the canva,a for Land Rover
ownen and enthusiuta to
experience the legendary

Organized by Land Rover
Newport Beach sales veteran
Richard Nellon, director of
off-road eveota, the

every three months in a

Only a few hours drive from

approximately 20 Land Rover

arrived Saturday afternoon to
the lleepy deeert town of
Borrego Sprinp, ttlelf
surrounded by the Anza

Once the veNcles were

we deputed for Borrego

encourages owners to drive

rock formations and sparse

landscape, almost defying
convention with their ability
to survive such a harsh
eirftronment
Soon, the drive became
more challenging with the
vehicles having to negotiate
an ever more uneven and
rock-ltreWll path. How the
Land Rovers remain
composed over such terrain
with their suspensions
articulating was impressive.
These vehicles were truly in
their element. A little
less than two hours
later, the group
rejoins the highway
headed for the next
trail to conquer. The
Calcite Mine trail, as
lt'a .lcnown, is not
only more
challenging than
Truckhaven but has
some historical
signiftcance as well.
At the top of the trail
ii an area where the
mineral Calcite was
collected. This
mineral was mined
during World War ll,
fot Its use in among
other things, gun
lights, until HMS when a
synthetic substitute was
invented.
The trail was much steeper
than the morning's excwsion
and quite narrow in some
places. All the better to
showcase the capability of
dlele Land Rovers. At a few
pc>lnia where the terrain
became particularly roclcy and
~,-the Land Rover staff
exited their vebldes and
helped direct the other drivers
through theae molt
challenging spots. The
Dilcovery apd Range Rover
ambled up the rocks with

the Calcite Mlae area
rewvdid the ~up with a .

----~ salton Sea
-California's largest internal
body of water. After ta.king
some time to explore and
snap pictures, it was back into
the air-conditioned comfort
of the vehicles for the start
down the steep, winding
rocky road.
The Land Rover Hill
Descent Control CHDC)
system worked marvels to
maintain a disciplined
descent. For those who have
never experienced this
feature, the HDC engages
with the push of a button,
selecting the transmission's
lowest gear, without using the
brake pedal, the vehicle's
forward progress down the
hill is limited to a few miles
per hour. Approximately four
boun later, after tackling two
of Anza Borrego Desert's
many off-road trails, the
group is back on the highway.
Land Rovers and Range
Rovers now covered in a
proud suit of dust and dirt,
with drivers a bit weary but
elated, make their way back to
the resort for a late check out.
The off-road weekend
adventure all too quickly
came to a close. But not
without instilling into the
drivers a sense of
appreciation and pride from
experiencing a Land Rover
product in its element. For
those who came out for the
weekend without a Land
Rover of their own, this
experience off-road was
perhaps the ultimate
presentation of the Land
Rover brand. For those who
drove their own vehicles, such
weekends help to bring about
a satisfaction of knowing the
character and philosophy of
the brand so frequently heard
or read about is very much
alive and present in their
Land Rover.

Mercury showrooms continues in
2005 with the introduction of the
all-new Men:ury Milan, a sleek.
entty-level sedan.
In announcing its new
advertising campaign and tag line -
"New Doors Open• -Mercury also
unveiled a sketch of Its fourth new

"We use the words 'different' and
'smarter' quite a bit when talking
about Mercury," said Darryl Hazel,
Lincoln Mercury president "They

Milan will bring a different
customer to Mercury dealers -
significantly younger customers
drawn to the upscale design and

The five-passenger Milan will
enter the midsiz.e-sedan market,
which remains one of the industry's
largest segments.
The 2006 Milan takes its design
inspiration and cues from the
modem, savvy new Mercury design
DNA that has developed into a
family of contemporary new cars,
SUVs and minivans. The Milan will
be based on Ford Motor Company's
CD3 architecture.
distinct personality and
commitment to craftsmanship will
be apparent with upscale materials,
precision fit-and-finish, and
satin-aluminum appearance trim
accents.
The Mercury Milan goes into
production at Ford's assembly plant
and supplier park in Hermosillo,
Mexico in the third quarter of 2005.
Over the next four years, Uncoin
Mercury will introduce 11 new
