'PACHYDERM PROCESSION'
It's not often that you see a 4-ton elephant strolling through
a Costa Mesa alley. So when we got a tip that there would be
one at the Hilton, I had to check it out
Tu.i. a 34-year-old endangered Asiatic elephant was trucked
in from Perris to cany the groom of a traditional Indian
wedding to the ceremony. From the minute the animal was
unloaded from its trailer things got interesting. Passing cars
just stopped. Mouths dropped and stares of confusion ran
a.cross the faces of hotel employees.
Everyone came out to take a look. to ask if they can pet her
or even take a picture with lady of the hour. At one point a
hotel shuttle and all traffic behind it was blocked when a taxi

and that. in light of the more recent
comment., he would head up a

Then it got better. It was like we were all back in
kindergarten when Tai had to take a bathroom break. All eyes
were on her. Mesmerized by the whole thing people giggled
and joked. Then the groom arrived and it was time to get
serious.
After the novelty of having the trunked aeature around
wore off. things began to take shape. The sounds of drums and
chanting echoed through the alley signaling that the weddin.g
procession was on It's way. All in all it was a great assignment.

Forming a fast bond, the two

they contemplated marriage.

In September, Kitaen agreed to

people who show up will get a

That's a lie. I made the ti.me

brand new.
You've heard a lot about the
history of Costa Mesa lately,
but I want to give you the real
deal, the inside story, the
interesting stuff nobody ever
tells you about how Costa
Mesa came to be -a job to
whlch I am particularly
well-suited, since I was five
years old in 1953 and busy
stealing Raisinets and Black
Cows from candy stores in the
Bronx.
Until the 1830s, Costa Mesa
was in Seal Beach. Between
the horses and the wagons
and people on foot slogging
their way back and forth on
the San Diego Freeway
everyday, it was a nightmare.
Finally, a man named Eddie
Fairview called everyone
together and said, "You know
what? This bites." Everyone
agreed.
"Why don't we just move the
whole thing down there? It's
beautiful and roomy and
there's always a nice breeze.
What do you say1"
"OK," they sald. Then
everybody cheered.
Right after they all got here,
Eddie opened a hotel, whlch
became so famous for its hot
springs that soon the whole
area came to be known as
"Fairview." Some years later,
an Italian woman named
Paolina Paularlno showed up
and opened a caf~ that served
the best latt6 and biscotti,
especially the ones with the
hazelnuts and the whlte
chocolate, In Orange County.
On the weekends, people from
as far away as Brea and Allso
Viejo would line up for blocks
and soon, the area around
what is now Bristol and Bak.er
would become known as
Paularlno.
In 1860, a retired merchant
seam.an named Jedidiah
Harper showed up. He was a
quiet man who kept to himself
and eked out a living towing
flatbed barges laden with
peopJe, livestock. dry goods
and designer band~ up
and down the Santa An.a River.
But In the awn.mer, people
from fat and wide would
come to rldo Harpe(a Ferry.
It became to famou. by
1859 that the entire area came
to be caDed •Harper." Yem

first listed it for just under $15
million in August, but pulled it
off the market and re-listed it in
February for just under $11
million.
~You can tell by the price that
it's a special property," said Bill
Cote of Cote Realty Group, the
agency that listed the property.
"It's one of the best pieces of
property in Orange County."
When Stearns heard the
house was on the market again
-he had even looked at it with
Burbano earlier -he quickly
c;ubmitted an offer.
The seven-bedroom. 13,000
square-foot home. which counts
nine bathrooms, makes for a
stunning sight. The
Tuscan-style, three-story home
has a 12·car subterranean
Paularino's Cafe and Harper's
Ferry were long gone, and
people adopted the name
"Costa Mesa" -a Chumash
Indian term fo r "shopping on
the coast."
33 years later, the election of
June 29, 1953 made it official,
legal, incorporated. so forth
and so one. And the rest, as
they say, is the rest.
So what about the Happy
Birthday song?
It all started in the
mid· 1800's with two sisters
from Kentucky, Mildred J. Hill
and Patty Smith Hill. or as
their friends called them,
Mildred and Patty. Both the
Hill girls had long careers as
teachers and educators.
Patty, who was a faculty
member at Columbia
University, developed a
learning system oalled the
"Patty Hill Blocks" that
became a national model for
kindergartens and elementary
schools aGross the country.
Mildred Hill was both a
teacher and an accomplished
musician.
ln 1893, while Mildred was
teaching and Patty was
principal at the "Louisville
Experimental Kindergarten
School." Patty wanted a
cheerful ditty that even the
most unmusical teachers and
kids could sing to start the
day. Mildred came up with the
simple. repetitive melody that
we know as "Happy Birthday
to You " and Patty added the
lyrics: "Good morning to you
... Good morning to you ...
Good morning, dear children
. .. Good morning to all.~
I don't know why she
switched to "Good morning to
all" in the last line either, but I
guess you had to be there.
Within months, classrooms
across the country were
ringing with "Good Morning
to All." By the way, for those of
you old enough to remember
It, we're not talking about
"Good Morning to You" here,
whlch ls another song.
Not long after, someone
decided Mildred and Patty's
simple song also worked great
for birthday celebrations and
changed the lyrics to "Happy
Birthday To You." Today, it's
been translated and used as a
birthday song around the
world.
So what does any or this
have to do with Costa Mesa's
SOth or the United Statea of
America'a"227th1 Not a thing,

Happy birthday,
Costa Mesa
F ifty years doesn't seem
like a long time. And if
you jusl ask some of
those who have been
part of Costa Mesa's
first half-century of civic life, it
probably has flown by.
But here we are at the 50th year
of cityhood with so much to
celebrate, so much to still do and
lots of reasons to reflect.
Let's stan with the last.
It all staned with a population
boom after World War II that
took the city from its farm and
"Goal Hill" roots to a booming
municipality tha1 would one day
house one of the most successful
recail centers in the nation, a
performing an center and
theacer company to rival
Broadway. a thriving county (air
and a bustling and respected
community college.
The makeup of its people has
evolved from ranch hands and
ranch owners to a flavorful
ethnic mix of Old World
European to Tongan. Latino and
Asian. African and Native
Americans.
Cosca Mesa is now a thriving
community of affluent homes on
one end and low-income
apartment housing on the other.
It's a community that features
Neiman Marcus on one e nd and
Grant Boys sporting goods on the
other.
It's a communJty that boasts a
downtown square in the shape of
a triangle on one end and a
bridge so intricace that it is itself
a piece of an on the other.
Costa Mesans are civic-minded
and trendy and compassionate,
yet frugal.
It's a community of soup
kitchens and charities, an
anti-mall, a model-train ride and
the best darn fish caco rescauram
around.
But it's also a community at a
crossroads -a community
divided by those who seek
change and improvement to
those who love the city's eclectic
and free-spirited traditions.
It's a community grappling
with how to d eal with a changing
population, many of whom are
new immigrants to this country.
It's a community whose very
n ame comes from the sea, but
bemoans there nol a beach
within its limits.
It's a community with
outstanding city leadership and
some left to be desired. A
community with top-notch
schools and those struggling to
overcome sometimes
insurmountable odds.
Since its beginnings in 1953.
Costa Mesa has been seeking a
path of progress. In 2003, we can
say it is safely on that path. With
50 years under its belt, this
community has learned a lot and
will continue to learn so much
more.
Happy birthday, Costa Mesa,
and here's to the future. We're just
glad to be here to chronicle il all.
Newport Coast resort
will fit area perfectly
U p and down the Orange
County coasc, luxury
resorts are popping up
like diamonds in a
(well-groomed) rough.
Huntington Beach has the Hilton.
Laguna Beach has the Montage.
Monarch Beach and Dana Point
have the St. Regis and Ritz
Carlton. Newport Beach just goc
the new Balboa Bay Oub and
Reson.
Now Newpon Coasc is set to
join the party.
Within the next few years, if all
goes according to plan, the Irvine
Hill, a luxury stop with 204 guest
rooms in 40 bungalows, 52
vacation homes, 68
shared-ownership villas, a spa
and a new golf club house.
There wiU be challenges, of
course. Although the project is
not affecced by the city's
growth-control Greenlight law,
residents are certain -and right
-to raise con cerns about
possible traffic and
environmen tal problems. And
the lrvine Co. wUl be wise to
ensure that the construction ls
sensitive to the surrounding area,
which includes Cryscal Cove State
Parle, and that the process is open
to review.
Why? Because if company
officials do so, this looks to be a
project that fits this area
perfectly. .
Newport-Mesa, with its
world-class beaches, its shopping
-from South Coast Plaza to
Fashion "Island -and its fine
dining, is the perfect spot for a
high-class resort. With such a
climate, it is amazing that until
this month, with the Bay Oub's
reopening, there was no
Four Seasons, while luxurious.
doesn't have the full-run
amenities of a resort.)
The benefits go beyond the
perks for visitors, of course. The
resort will pump money into the
city's budget, and those visitors
are cenain to spend money while
they are here, add ing co the area's
tourist -based economy.
It is a project that just makes
sense. And one that will make
dollars, too.
It should be one that residents
of the Newport-Mesa area
support.

The significance of •

The Raiders' newest
receiver, Ryan Hoag,
was treated to a party
usually reserved for
the first, not the last.
B eing picked last is
almost always a bad
thing. But not so for
the 48th pick of the
seventh round, the
262nd pick overall in the National
Football League annual draft. That
last pick ls celebrated as the
Irrelevant Week honoree. Mr.
Irrelevant 2003, Ryan Hoag, who
was the last pick in this year's NFL
Draft. sat down for a chat with
columnist Lolita Harper during his
week-long stay in Newport-Mesa to
celebrate his posterior. The
Newport-Mesa community-led
by Paul Salata -rolled out the red
carpet for the future Oak:lancf Rakier
for a week of parties. In this case the
nice guy did finish last

Making changes take s a little fai th
Change.
Does anyone really bke
it? I know our readen. really
don't
Since we made changes to our
features section the first pan of
this month, I've received several
calls and e-mails complaining
about the decision 10 move the
Faith page from Page 2 to deeper
inside the paper.
The message of the callers was
that we had relegated religion to a
less-than-important topic with
ouractiom.
Nothing could be further from
thttruth----
First. let's talk about the feature
that we placed on Page 2 on
Saturdays lnstead of Faith.
The page fs called Boomen and
Beyond and it Is dedicated to
activities and stories &om the
older set lo town. 90Uldhing that
was m1aing from our pages in
years put.
A large portion of the Daily
PIJot readership falls in that older
caregory. so we believed it was
time we gave them more reasons
lo read the paper.
Just a side note: I have to admit
thal I.he otle of
the page
didn't come
from one of
our
newsroom
staffers. but
from Me1llla
Admm,a
Newport
Beach library
sta1fer.
Adam.9 has
TONY
DODERO been writing
our Olec:k It Out library book
fearure for years. And one day she
was~-~~
talking about the new featw'e
page we wanted to start for
seniors.
I mentioned to her that many
Baby Boomers were now
beooming seniors themsetves. but
that they dWibd that descriptor.
So we wue trying to come up
with a name lor the page that
would~ an those of
advancing age.
You know. people who hit let's
say. 50, but I.hey aren't ready to
give up golf for shu1Deboard yet
That's when she susgested the
name Boomers and Beyond and
fl stuck.
Thanks. Melis.sa.
Page 2 seemed like a natural
place to stan it But even more,
we wanted to add to our religion
coverage that already features the
great work of Cindy lrane
Chrlstesons long-running column
The Moral of the Story.
So I picked up a feature that ~-e
are doing in another of our
papers caDed In Theory. Each
week, we will ask local clergyman
some of the burning questions of
the day and get their feedback.
In addition to that we. will ~
an expanded faith calendar. gvmg churches and religious
groups a better shot at seeing
their actMties get in the paper. In
addition. we hope LO expand the
rel!gion ~With stories on
churches or church leaden or
church groups that will team up
with our weekly features.
I thiqk religious leaders will see
more coverage not Jes,,. ·
something that Is not p<>Mlble to
accomplish with the llmJted space
we ha'Ve on Page 2.
So I know, change Is hard. But I
have faith, Lhar 1n unw. our
religiou5 reader. Y.1U <,('(.' the
benefits.

taining her mental makeup,
Costa Mesa's Nelly Radeva lik-
ened her match Saturday to a
marathon.
Along with reinforcing words
from Rance Brown, Radeva's
coach of three years. the top
seed in the girls 12s singles divi-
sion rebounded from a one-set
deficit to claim a 4-6. 6-4, 6-3
semlfinal victory over fourth-
seeded Pamela Montez in the
lOlst annual Southern Califor-
rtia Tennis Association junior
sectional championships at Los
Caballeros Sports Village.
"I told myself, 'Just don't give
up and stay tough.' " Radeva
said, moments after defeating
Montez, whom Radeva also beat
i11 the semifinals of both the Ojai
Valley tennis tournament and a
Quiksilver/Roxy event earlier in
1he year.
"(Al Ojai) I beat (Montez) in
three sets and two sets at (QuiJc-

tu the net a lot more (Saturday)
and she won a lot of points
there."
Radeva broke Montez ~ce in
the second set to tie the set at
1hree games apiece and again
for the clinching game.
Radeva said she expected
Montez to come to the net and
focused on maintaining consis-
tency.
Ml had a marathon mentality,".
she said. "Hit it hard, hit it deep
and don't miss them."
As the match wore on, Radeva
hit more backhand winners

seeded player in girls 12.s in
Southern California and No. 5

"This year I think I am more
