NEWPORT BF.ACH -The tint day
of school at Newport C.oast Elemen-

in the parldng lot for parents drop-
ping off their children and then pick-
ing them up again. Cars once over-
crowded the school's small parking
lot, forcing many to line up several
streets away.
That's all changed, thanks to the
completion of a project designed to
provide traffic-congestion relief for
the school's busiest times. 007.ens of
cars can now squeeze in together on
the school's new Loop Road, taking
some of the stress off of nearby
streets.

D omestic violence
can breed denial
and shame,
prnenting women
from aeeking help to escape,
said Vivian Clecak. founder of
an agency that helps victims
recover.
Clecak and four others
founded Human Options as a
hotline in 1981. It grew into a
idl-.ervtce agency that offers
an emergency sbeJter. a
transldonal-housing program
and a community resource
center in Costa Mesa.
Battered women are the
most common clienta, but the
orpnlzation eerves women
and men abuled lo straight or
bomocwmaal relationships.
While it's tough for many
victims of domestic violence
to extricate themselves from
such relationahips, it la
signi.flcantly harder for
victims in affluent areas,
because they have more
emotional aJbatroSM!S to bear,
Oecaksaid.
•The better the husband
and wife look on the outside,
the harder it is to leave.
because battered women are
blamed by aodety, and they
blame themselves. so the
shame level is severe for any
abused woman but more so
for any woman that has the
outside trappings of material
wealth.. Oecak said.
Many women in financially
secure marriages deny they
are being battered and go to
great lengths to cover up any
signs. Oecak said.
"They get so used to
denytog, m1nimlzlng, hiding
bruises and makfng em.asa
that that becomes their
normal life," she said.
Domestic-violence victims
are referred or ordered to
Human Options by various
sources such as police
departtnents, therapists and
word of mouth, Oecak said.
•Many are lsolated and
afraid," Oecak said. •That
first counselor (on the
hotline) helps them figure out
a safety plan of how best to
get out"
After they leave their
abusers, they are able to
come to the shelter and stay
for about six weeks. The
shelter is a cozy place where
each famOy bas its own room.
Oecaksaid.
"Our shelter is a beautiful
home," Oecak said. "lt doesn't
look lib the stereotype of a
shelter. But the word 'shelter'
has a negative image and, of
course, what we want to
educate the public about is
that it's safe. warm. and
there's no shame in seeking
help."
After they leave the shelter.

General Plan meeting
was hardly open to all
I was the Individual who wrote the
Daily Pilot after the laat General Plan
Advisory Committee meeting. My
letter wu not published, but the Pilot
did write about my feelinp after that
meeting. To summarize, I wrote the
Pilot because the committee took
&.le with and argued with
slow-growth ~t leader Phil
Ant during the public comment
portion of that meeting. I thought it
wu wrong to debate with a
representative of the public after
asking for their comments. I was also
surprised at how quickly the meeting
was adjourned. I, and I assume others,
did not get a chance to be heard. The
mood ln the room was prejudiced.
The committee had its fl1J of public
commenta after Ant spoke.
Roger Alford's comments ln the
Daily Pilot Sunday illustrate his bias
against Arst's contribution raty
committee diverse and working well•).
To read his letter about how "on tract"
the planning is going is like being
back at the meeting itself. Alford says
Arst ·probably did not believe in the
general plan process.• Alford says
Arst's comments were not to the point
and that he attacked everything. I
won't hazard a guess as to what Arst
does or doesn't believe. but I thought
he made good points using a city of
Newport Beach commissioned poll of
the residents that showed an
overwhelming majority ln favor of
maintaining the high quality of life of
the residents and keeping Newport as
a beach-and bay-oriented
community. Arst was an advocate of
redeveloping older areas so as not to
add traffic. Arst came with handouts
and played the role of resident well.
The single most used word at the
committee meeting was "intensify.•
Intense growth seems to be the goal of
the numerous committee members.
And did the meeting end abruptly?
Within a second or two of Arst sitting
down, the committee members were
on their feet, talking among
themselves, and the meeting was over.
I think that in a well -run meeting. the
chair should have reminded the
members to not debate the public but
let them have their three minutes of
democracy. The bias is so pro-growth
that it didn't happen that way.

expansion debate
Once again the Daily Pilot has fallen
under the sway of St. Andrew's public
relations machine rQ and A." Sunday).
Their money speaks loud and clear. For
the record, the neighborhoods have
never attacked the programs proposed
ln the near 40,000-square-foot
expansion. They have attacked the
consequences of this expansion.
Moreover, In negotiations. they have
presented proposal& which would
achieve all of saint Andrew's
programmatic goals with minimum
additional square footage. Olllrch
members not supportive of the
expansion (and there are many) have
indicated that parts of the facility are
underutilized as it is.
Again for the record, Saint Andrew's
plans show 16,000 square feet for
additional comdors, Mstorage, •
bathrooms and a Ncoffee bar." This
number has been questioned by the
city and suggests an overall increase
in the carrying capacity of the facilicy.
something not mentioned by the PR
machine. Also. the plans include a set
of classrooms that could become a
full-fledged school, just what this
school-impacted area needs. In
negotiations with the neighborhoods.
Saint Andrew"s has not ruled out

the facility.
When one studies the plans and
hears the rhetoric corning from the

ask is should Saint Andrew's follow the
Mariners Cllristian example and

Postiff, an BngU.ah teach"r at the

Uhl said Postiff'1 concern for •tu·

Before coming to Mesa, Postiff spent
four years coaching boya and girls

Tim Postiff admitted transitioning
from assistant to head coach of the
Costa Mesa High boys water polo
team went as smooth as
he could have imag·. ined.
If only scheduling
games were as easy.
Postitf enters his
first season at the helm
of a team Bob Shupp guJd-ed
for three years before retiril1g after
last season. Shupp, who moved to h1s
Montana ranch, led the Mustangs
from the bowels of the Pacific Coast
League just a few years ago to a sec-
ond-place finish in the Golden West
League last season and a berth in tl\e
CIF Southern Section Division ll play·
offs.
Mesa returns nine, including six
starters, off that team, giving Postitf,
also the school's newest boys athletic
director, added optimism heading
into the seaaon.
Despite Mesa's recent rise, Postiff
found dilliculty in getting the Mus-
tangs into some of the more presti-
gious tournaments along with sched-
uling games against traditional water
polo strongholds. Excluding tourna-
ments, the Musrangs will play 11
gimes, but six of those are reserved
for league opponents. The Muatangs
open at El Modena on Sept. 14.
Costa Mesa will voluntarily play all
three of its league home games at Es·
tapcia. however, after two league
coaches voiced their concerns about
the depth of the shallow end in the
Mustangs' pool.
Mesa's shallow end measures 4~
feet, six inches leas than the require-

cision to move the games.
