because of a job promotion that
took him to Washington, D.C As of
Wednesday afternoon, six people
filed papers to seek Adams' seat,
and the group consisted of a few
newcomers.
The list included Mk:h.eel

Commissioner Barry Eaton,
airport activist Charle.I Grlflln,
Gerald Heger. Newport Beach
Olamber of Commerce President
Richard Luehn and Ron Winship,
who Jost a 2002 bid for the 4th

The council plans to interview
candidates for that 4th di.Strict seat
at a special meeting Sept 21, and if
someone is not appointed that
night. the Issue will be continued
at the regular meeting Sept 28.
The appointment is the council's

council members selected Stew

Guy Proctor.
Ebbing number of

Endorsements in November
races aren't flying as furiously as
they did in the weeks before the
primary election, but some
candidates are still actively seeking
official nods. For instance, Costa
Mesa City Council candidate
Katrina Foley last week gained the
support of Newport Beach City
Councilman Stew Bromberg.
While council 1eats are
nonpartisan, it's notable that
Bromberg, a Republican, is
endorsing registered Democrat
Foley. But how much weight do
the opinions of Newport Beach
officials carry with voters in Costa
Mesa? No one seems certain.
MI don't know iflt'U make any
difference," Bromberg said of his
endorsement, which be said
Foley sought.
He gave it because he's been
impressed by Foley's work ethic,
intellect and ability to build
consensus, which is vital for
neighbor cities such as Newport
Beach and Costa Mesa, Bromberg
said.
He doesn't usually do
endorsements, and he's not
seekjng any this time around
because he's unopposed in his
reelection bid, he said.
•Local officials are generally
reluctant to endorse other
candidates for office in other
cities,· Bromberg said. "If they
lose, we may have to work with
their opponent.·
Costa Mesa Mayor Gary
Monahan, who is not up for
reelection this year, said not

EDITORIAL
Getting past the
first day of schoo~
P erhaps it's best if we all
first face a sad truth:
For a huge portion of
our community, this is
the worst week of the year.
'Jbat's right, school's started
again.
If you think back. you just
might remember the feelings
as sununer ended. There is
sadness as the freedom to do
anything or nothing slides
from between your fingers.
There is dread as that freedom
is replaced by the looming
regimen of class bells,
cl.aMwork and, worst of all,
homework. And growing up
here, where the beach can be
your playground -and if not
the beach, then any number of
parks, amusement parks,
movie theaters, you name it -
makes the pain of a
disappearing summer all that
much worse.
So let's face the fact that
many students aren't going to
be jumping out of bed these
first mornings. That's OK..
They'll come around.
And when they do come
around, it's up to us as parents,
friends and teachers to remind
them of the importance of
education. It's up to us to build
in them a love of learning that
will last a lifetime.
How can we do that? WeU,
every student will be different.
but it you can find a topic
someone is interested in, start
there. Show what else can be
found in its history, its
practices. Its rules or its
details. c.an you squeeze in a
little math or business
training? Demonstrate what it
takes to become an ~rt on
a subject. and you'll have gone
great lengths in showing what
it takes to succeed in school,
too.
We also can simply lead by
example. Pick up books and
read. If you have an interest in
something, investigate it Show
a love of finding out about
new ideas. Ask questions, and
don't be satisfied with quick
answers.
And be interested in what
those students you know are
interested in. Learn about it
together -that's a winning
proposition.
But first. make sure those
students get to school on time.

overwhelming 96% majority.
The "Sl James Fact Sheet,"
available on the church's website,
claims the congregation to number
•approximately l ,200 members.· In
its press release announcing its
defection. the church claims a
membership of"more than 1,200
members." According to math, and
counting both typeS of votes and the
abstention, 293 members voted on
the breakaway. This means that, in
reality, only 25CJfi of the congregation
was even present at the vote and 23%
of the membership voted "yes:
Bunyan's claims of 96CJfi, at the very
least, creatively skirt the truth.
Why does this matter? After all,
since Bunyan was not attaclted by his
flock last Sunday, they must approve.
WeU, there are repercussions to the
congregation that they may not know
about, repercussions that might light
a fire of anger under those stuck with
this decision but did not vote, or even
those who voted "yes" without
knowing the whole story.
The problem Is secular, and it's the
other thing Bunyan, I think. has not
been honest abouL He states that the
legal title to St James and Its
MAILBAG
surrounding property have always
been held by St. James, an
independent corporation since 1949.
And. church officials have stated that
"the diocese has no claims against"
this property. Not true.
Since 1979, the <:anons. or laws that
govern the F.piscopal Oiurch, have
had a provision known as the "Dennis
<:anon: This canon, canon l.7.4 of
the laws that control all Episcopal
churches, states: "All real and
personal property heJd by or ror the
benefit of any parish, rnJssion or
congregation Is held in trust for this
Oiurch and the Diocese thereof in
which such Parish, Mission or ·
Congregation is localed." In other
words, any church that elected to
remain Episcopal after 1979 rs bound
by an agreement that makes the
diocese, and not the parish, the
uJlimate owner of its property. If a
church secedes, it must leave its
property behind.
St. James c1aiJ'¥ to be the holder of
the deed to its property. This, and the
fact that they have been a corporation
since before the ~nnis Canon was
enacted, may be how they intend to
get around the provision.
Unfortunately for them, Andrew
Hun.seeker, writing in The Review
about the case of another St James,
reveals that this ls unlikely. His article
details the experience of St James the
Less in East Sl Falla. Pa., which
seceded from the Epilcopal Olurch
U.S.A. for similar reuons. Ub
Newport's church, St. James the Less
was also a corporation before the
Dennis Canon. a fact they beliewd
cleared them from the force of the
anything. In my opinion. lt should not be
sold.
rule. The coun found, according 10
Hunsecker, thal the diocese possesses
control of church property.
The SL James in Pennsylvania was
nol the only church to secede and
lose its property. In 2001. St. Andrew's
Oiurch in Morehead City, N.C., was in
an almost identica1 situation. Having
left on grounds of orthodoxy, like St
James, St Andrew's was sued for it!.
property by the Diocese of Easl
Carolina, again on grounds of the
Dennis <:anon. Thls time, St Andrew's
tried to get around the ca.non by
saying. essentially, that It had always
been "hostile· to it and no deed of
tru5t was signed that gave rights to
the diocese. Not good enough. The
court gave the property to the
diocese, ruling that there was no
record of hostility prior to the
secession. In addition, the court ruJed
that the Dennis Canon created a
•vaJid trust• and stripped property
from St. Andrew's.
These cases are not isolated. All of
this Information is available on the
Internet As a former Episcopal priest,
Bunyan must know about the Dennis
<:anon. He must also know about the
court decisions all over the country
that have gone against him. Yet, in
media reports, be maintains
confidence that the property is safe.
Perhaps he has a very large rabbit in
his hat -he must, given his
confidence. On the face, however, it
loob like Sl James will lose its
property. The members of Sl James
shouJd know.

Twelve of us listened to the

thrilled to be in company that
cared about such things. We had
arrived in Iowa City the day
before from all over the country
and were now gathered around
a table ln a classroom at the
University of Iowa, home of the
premier creative writing
program in the United Stales.
Before I left Southern
California, when I mentioned to
my friends that Iowa City was
my destination, the response
usually was, "Where is Iowa City,
and why would you go there?"
Iowa City is known to Big Ten
athletic fans as the home of the
University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
Statues of Herley, the Hawkeye
mascot, decorate nearly every
comer. Iowa City, the original
capital of Iowa, is about 30 miles
from Cedar Rapids. The
University of Iowa, rated the
19th best public university in
·the country, dominates the
town, which lies on the sloping
ban.ks of the Iowa River. It is an
easy walking town with a softly
undulating quality. The central
mall hosts musicians and poetry
readings, good restaurants and
superior bookstores.
The University of Iowa
initiated the Iowa Writer's
Workshop in 1922, which makes
ii the oldest graduate writing
program anywhere. It is also the
most prestigious. Graduates of
the Iowa Writer's Workshop
include Raymond Carver,
Flannery O'Connor, John Irving.
Jane Smiley and Wallace
Stegner. The teachers are just as
illustrious. Familiar names such
as Robert Frost. Philip Roth,
Kurt Vonnegut. John Clleever
and Gail Godwin have been on
the faculty.
The Summer Writing Festival
offers workshops in beginning
and advanced poetry, memoirs,
novel wridr:g and nonfiction.
The topics are specialized into
"Story Structure for the Screen.·
"Getting to the Deeper Story,"
"The Second Draft" and more
specific workshops about
different genres of writing.
For workshop participants,
the mornings are free to explore

Costa Mesa High football coach Tom Baldwin gives instructions to his Quarterback, Ryan French (lOl, during last

O>ach lbm Baldwin is
ftllllisdc about his
team's chances of re-
~ding from last

21-7, loll to Brea Olinda.
"You haw to consid« who you're
playing.· he said, referring to Fridays
showdown against crosstown rival C.0-
rona del Mar (1-0). "They are a lot bee·
fer than a l.oling won't be the end of
our leMOn. l'xn not giving up. but if we

"When they stole the ball. it WU 7--0

ages. It was just a miscommunication
on who to pick up.·
BaJdwin said he hopes to eliminate
those mistak~ against the Sea Kmgs.
citing last year's close. 19-14, CdM
win.
"We need to execute our basic of-
&nse, • i.e Aid. 'We were able to move
the ball quite weU against them last
year."
Baldwin said he won't watch a lot of
last year's game film to scout the Sea
Kings, but rather the 35-14 victory
over Estancia from last week.
•They executed their offense very
well and they're leading recefvers
(Kevin Welch and Shane Collins! didn't
even play in the game.· he said. "They
are a very good football team.·
The CdM opdon with Tom Welch at
quarterback has BaJdwin and the
Mesa coaching staff worried because,
when performed correctly, the option
puts a lot of pressure on the defense.
"We have to tackle everybody," he
said. "The fullback. quarterl:>ack and
pitchman all have to be tackled. We
have to be where we have 10 be in or-
der to defend the option. When some-
one can run the option ~ well, it
creates real problems. It cuts down on
the amount of blitzing you can play
against them..

the deltisions that hinder

Here are some or the
transitional characteristics noted
between top level junJors and
~journeyman professiooal,
and then~ to the elite pro.
Included in this d1scus.slo11 was
also the seem1ngJy popular and
perhaps abused tendency of
those not ready "going pro."
The stages of players we saw
at the Open are what the USTA
program puts in the 4-6 atages.
The 4 is a player in the higll
national or college ranking. a
world-class junior like here at
the U.S. Open and a transidonal
Pro. A 5 is a world-class player in
the 50-150 range and a 6 la
someone In the top 50.
What are some of the
differences between some of the
juniors in 4, the differences
between 4 and 5 and between 5
and 67 And the point most ~
to most of us at home is what do
ow kids in the local level,
wanting to get to the next leve~
have to do or what is missing?
p...fany of these characteristics are
rQade in comparison to
intemationaJ players, which
many parents are concerned
about as their kids plan to play
in colfege. •
Some of our own elite athletes
in the 4 and 5 level have an
intense work etluc. They are
physically ~uperior to lower
levels and truly understand the
need for physical prowess.
Believe me, when Sargis Sargsian
(a former NCAA great and
tounng pro of 8 years) just set
the record of nine hours in two
consecutive singles matches at
the U.S. Open, 1N1 ........ the

Another area of comparllod
lies in the lack of complete Uilll
among U.S. jwlio11 (and eve11
some elite U.S. junlore)
compared to the intemadooal
junior. Aaying doubles 11 aucia1
in helping th.ls deficiency-
playing at net. transitloo1ng to
net. and having the ability to
play angles, soft shots, and the
like. So many kids do not have
the aid.Os that enable them to be
an court players because they do
not play doubles.
Along these lines, one of the
tbJ:ngs that was very notiCeabJe
and most coaches here
commented on was the clearly
comfortable presence on the
court in using a variety of ahota
that the international kids had.
Though many U.S. players have
big games, many coaches
commented that they can be a
bit one dimensional at times
whereas international juniors
have a fuller game. It also seems
that U.S. kids should play more
so they are more comfortable
with their skill in all situations.
Too often, clinics and lessons are
not active or match-play
oriented. And competing Wlder
pressure with weapons and a
variety of shots is what aeates
that ease. No one will serve and
volley under p~ure lf they
don't practice it under some kind
