Rides at the right time
Service uses scooters to
get designated drivers
where they're needed.
Oeepa Bharath
Daily Pilot
If you see a man riding a little white
Italian scooter down Newport
Boulevard, its not because you're
drunk.
But if you have one of those scooters
folded up in the trunk of your car with
its driver driving your car, then it's very
lllcely you are drunk.
The foldable scooters are the key
components in a new designated
driver service in Newport Beach that
caters primarily to families that are out
dining in the city's restaurants.
Owners Hugh Finlay and fiancee
Missy Prenesti came up with the idea
when they visited Ireland.
This is how it works. The designated
driver arrives on a scooter when called,
folds up the scooter and puts it in the
trunk of the car and drives the
customer home. He drops the
customer and his or her vehicle off and
returns on.the scooter.
The scooters reach speeds of up to
35 mph, preven ting them from going
on freeways. They fit in any car except
very small spons CaJ"S such as Porsches
or Ferraris, Prenesti said. The service
costs $30 within Newport Beach and
$45 to Laguna Beach.
HThe idea was born from sheer
frustration," Finlay said HEvery time
we're out dining or partying, we had a
problem . We couldn't get a cab when
we needed one or we'd have to leave
our car behind."
The business. Pacific Safe Home

said.

service that extends from Costa Mesa

"We cater mostly to restaurants, but
if someone in a bar wants us to pick
them up. we'll do it," Prenesti said.

O\RE. Feelings tqward this pro-
gram. administered by the New-
port-Mesa UnJfied School Dis-
trict, ran the gamut
On one end. Mayor Gary
Monahan and Councilman
Mike Scheafer defended the
program. Mansoor wanted to
review the funding and make
sure the money is being spent
efficiently.
Councilwoman Libby Cowan
suggested redirecting law en-
forcement personnel and other
funding from the program to the
Westside patrol effort. asking new
Police O\ief John Hensley to work
out the details. Steel supported
this concept, but when Monahan
made a substitute motion that
did not include redirecting fund-
ing. Steel dissented. He recom-
mended that the school district
provide the funding.
"l think there's maybe a bener
and cheaper way to get the same
information out to the schools
without being restricted by ~
requirements. because I want to
free up some of that money.·
Steel said Thursday. ·rm not

abuse."
JOB CENTER
The Job Center proved to be a
lightning rod of controversy once
again.
Although before the June
meeting. Mansoor had requested
the Issue be put on an agertda,
Steel made a motion to shut it
down. The motion did not re-
ceive any support. He also rec-
ommended pun.Ing a referen-
dum on the Job Center on the
March 2004 ballot as purely an
advisory measure.
He said no one should be sur-
prised by his strong opposition to
the center.
"I don't know why (the city)
would want to finance and en-
dure unintended consequences-
lof the center)," Steel said. "Let
the business community run and'
fund a Job Center."

, Breakers visit Sacr~mento. for .o.pener
Newport Beach
begins World Team
Tennis season
tonight on road
against defending
champion Capitals.
Patrick Laverty
Daily Pilot
It has been said that timing is
everything and for 16-year-old
Maria Sharapova the time
might be now.
If that is the case, Newport
Beach tennis fans are in for
quite a treat.
Sharapova is one of five play-
. ers on the Newport Beach
Breakers, the reincarnation of
the Newpon Beach World Team
Tennis franchise last seen
around these pans in 1994. The
Breakers begin play tonight at 7
against the Sacram ento Capi-
tals at the Sunrise Mall in Cit-
rus Heights.
The Breakers' home opener
is scheduled at Palisades Tennis
Oub on Tuesday, also against
Sacramento at 7 p.m. Though
Newpon Beach's marquee
player is listed as Lindsay Oav-
enpon , Sharapova could be the
breakthrough s tar.
Nominated by Teen People
earlier this year as "one of 20
teenagers who wiU change the
world," and last year by Sport
Magazine as "one of 21 athletes
to watch out for in the 2 lst cen-
tury." Sharapova showed what
alJ the fuss is about at Wimble-
don.
A wild-card entrant, Shara-
pova advanced to the fourth
round before falling to fellow
Russian SvetJana Kuznetsova,
6-1. 2-6, 7-5.
But it's fell.ow Russian Anna
Kournikova with whom Shara-
pova has often been compared.
The biggest difference between
the two seems to be that Shara-
pova acrually has the chance to
be a dominating tennjs player.
Davenpon has been a domi-
nating player for years. The
three-time Grand Slam singles
champion lost in the quaner-
finals of Wimbledon to Venus
Williams in three sets, but her
performance, combined with
that of Sharapova, has the
Breakers brass thinking big.
"I think we're going to have
some full stands," Breakers
GeneraJ Manager Lisa Fonman
said. "There's no question the
performance of those two
young ladies has peaked inter-
est."
to play, with the other coming
July 12. The first match at Pa]j-
sades wiU also mark the ret11m
of World Team Tennis to the
area for the first time since
1994, when the Newport Beach
Dukes set the WfT record for
best reguJar-season record with
a 14-0 mark.
The 2003 season again ha~ 14
matches scheduled, all played
within the span of three weeks.
In.d uded among the Breakers'
home schedule are matches
against the New York Sportimes
and John McEnroe on JuJy 15
and the Philadelphia Freedoms
and Martina Navratilova oo
July 26, the regular-season fi-
nale.
With I 0 teams from around
the country, World Team Tenrus
is broken into Eastern and
Western Divisions, each con-
sisting of five teams. The win-
ners of each division will meet
in the World Team Tennis finaJs
Aug. 23 al the USTA NationaJ
Tennis Center in Flushing
Meadows, N.Y. during the U.S.
Open.
World Team Tennis consists
of one set each of men's singles,
men's doubles, women's sin-
gles, women's doubles and
mixed doubles. The resulting
cumulative score decides the
winner.
In addition to Davenport and
Sharapova, the Breakers' squad
includes three-time World
Team Tennis .Most VaJuable
Player Brian MacPhie, Josh
Eagles and Eva Dyrberg. The
club is coached by fo rmer USC
men's tennis coach Dick Leach.
Sacramento, the defending
WTT champion, has Andre
Agassi as its featured player.
The Capitals' roster also in-
cludes AJly Baker, Mark Know-
les, Elena Likhovtseva and
Daniel Nestor. The team is
coached by Wayne Bryan, who
guided the squad to the WTT
crown last season, the fran-
chise's fifth WTT championship
in its 18 seasons in the league.
The prize for fans are the
marquee appearances by Oav-
enpon, Mc.Enroe, Agassi and
Navratilova, but, judging from
the Wimbledon resuJts, it may
just end up being Sharapova
who steaJs the show.
Much of that interest sur-
rounds Tuesday's home opener,
one of two home matches in
which Davenpon is scheduled
"I think both she and Lindsay
are doing us proud," Fortman
said. "It couldn't be better tim-
ing." Marina Sharapova is among the star attractions for the Newport Beach Breakers, who open their season tonight at 7 at Sacramento.
