Mesa's newest coffee
shop, even though
proprietors refer 10 loyal
customers as "Peetniks."
Emeryville-based Peel's
Coffee and Tea Inc. opened a
store on East 17th Street las!
week. and some Peetniks have
already sniffed it out.
·1 grew up in Northern
California, and they have a lot
of Peet's there." said Ben
Ingmire, who Jives across the
street from the Costa Mesa store
and has dropped in severaJ
Limes since it opened.
Founded in 1966 in Berkeley
by Dutch immigrant AJfred Peet,
the company now has 87 stores
that serve coffee and tea drinks
but are focused on selling
freshly roasted coffee beans in
more than 30 varieties.
"We're pretty fanaticaJ about
freshness," Peet's chief
executive Pat O'Dea said. "You
need to get it from the roaster
to someone's cup as quickly as
possible.·
Employees in Emeryville
hand-roast the coffee beans,
which are measured out for
customers in the store, said
Scott Ylurriaga, manager of the
Costa Mesa Peet's.
"lf you were a customer, you
could look right in the bins, and
that's actually what you're going

The company touts the dark.

Connie Kim keeps a close eye on the scale as she measures out a pound of coffee beans for a
customer Saturday afternoon at Peefs Coffee & Tea in Costa Mesa, which opened last week.
Working for Starbucks for
about five years didn't convince
Ingmire 10 drink its coffee.
"I prefer Peet's just because
its a richer brew,• he said. "It's
got a UttJe bit of a kick to it."
Things have run smoothJy
'lince the store opening because
employees were trained at
Peet's Corona del Mar store.
then shifted to a new Laguna
Beach store before coming to
Costa Mesa, Yturriaga said.
A few special "reserve blends"
that selJ for $29.95 per haJf
pound may be too rich for the
average consumer's blood, but
Yturriaga said the com~any
hopes customers will try Peel's
coffee first and eventually buy
the beans to take home.
"This is only our third Orange
County store, so we're s till
building that knowiedge and
awareness," he said .
So far, it seems to be working.
Brooke Bombada of Newport
Beach was on her way to
another coffee shop recently
when she saw Peet's and
decided to try it.
·r got a chai latte, which is
something qu.t's not always
good at other places,· she said.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Sailors·' Win a ~t~dy in perseverance
Backups seasoned while
filling in for injured
~tarters, helped Newport
extend its Back Bay reign.
Rick Devereux
Ody Pilot
No coach wants injuries, but the early
ailments that plagued Newport Harbor
High may have helped Coach Jeff Brin-
ktey's football squad focus on the task at
band and forge a 21-17 come-from-be-
blnd victory over C.Orona del Mar
Thursday in the Battle of the Bay.
"The fact that we have bad to deal
with some adversity," Brinkley said re-
garding the key to the win. "[Quarter-
t>ackJ Kasey [Peters) showed his ability
as a leader to make big plays down in
the aunch for us when he hit three

drive):

receiver Taylor Young playing a limited
role due to an injured ankle. AD-Sea
View League linebacker Thomas Martin
out the first two games with a stomach
ailment and Newport-Mesa Player of
the Year Spencer Unk sidelined the first
two games because of a sore shoulder.
Martin and Link were factors in the
win against the Sea Kin~. with Martin
recovering a fumble to halt a Corona
drive deep into Newport territory late in
the third quarter. Martin also caught a
two-point conversion pass following
Link's 63-yard punt rerurn for a touch-
down. Link also caught the 4 7 -yard
game-winning pass with 1:07 remain-
ing.
"To be able to come away with a win
is a sign that we are competitors,· Brin-
kley said
The injuries in the opening weeks not
onty gave Newport Harl:>or the resiliency
to battle back. it also allowed backups to
gain valuable experience.
With Rippon out. fullback 'frevor The-
riot and sophomore Jasen Ruiz were
called upon to handle the running
game. And with Martin out. Theriot
moved to inside linebacker. The ab-
sence of Young and Theriot at outside
linebacker gave Greg Miner and Billy
Brown an opportunity to step up on de-
fense.
In the Corona del Mar game. Theriot
injured his left ann. It has been diag-
nosed as a dislocated elbow, which
means be should be able to return to
action shortly. But it also means Brown
and Ruiz will be able to build upon the
playing time they have seen so far.
·That's why you coach them all,·
Brtnkiey said "This is just one of those
years where we have to juggle things
around"
Brinkley said it was truly a team ef-
fort. with the offense. defense and spe-
cial teams contributing to the win.
"I think we played defense extremely
well," be said "I think they maybe get
three points if we don't tum the ball
over. They have a quartetback that can

Airport struggling to··stay under the cap
With passenger levels at John Wayne climbing every

limits on travelers annually are scheduled to end.

sets a curfew on flights to limit noise in
surrounding residential areas. The
agreement was renegotiated in 2003 to
raise the cap from 8.4 million to I 0.3

2011. The cap then becomes 10.8 mil-
lion passengers a year until 2015.
The number of passengers coming

growing since October 2003, when air-
port officials doled out added capacity
from the new cap to airlines.

to late last year," airport spokesman Jus-
tin Mc:Cusker said. "When you're seeing
increased levels, it's because the
amended settlement agreement allowed
the cap to move up."
Airport officials aren't speculating
when the cap will be reached because it

Opposition to the project from the near-

even before the co1111T1Wlon considered it
Monday. Opponents believe the project is
too dense, will exacerbate an already over-

property values. They also oppose open-

allow access to the site.

Most of the opponents have lived In the

are proving it's never 100 early to
dabble in journalism.
Brenda Colgate's first-graders
picked up their penctls and crayons
Monday and recorded the highlights
of their weekend in .. The Weekend
News." They reported several
sentences each about everything
from ~occer pracuct• to birthday
parties. ·nm ~ignment really helps
them, but somelimes I find out a Jot
of things that I wouldn't even want
to know," Colgate said. "Family
problems. Funny thin~ They can
be so innocent sometimes."
~olga1e compiles each child's
weekly news entrie~ -which
consist of two or three sentences
and crayon drawings on
16-by-20-inch ~eets-in a book. so
the pareuts can see them at the end
of the school year, she said. She also
lets the students guess at the
spellings, so they an use their
phonetic and deductive skills.
Kindergartener Erin Duddy, 5, sticks out her tongue as she focuses on
her work during Brenda Colgate's class at Andersen Elementary School.
"I had a sleepover with my friend
Annie at her house," Gabi Orr, 6.
read 10 the class while showing off
her smiling sdck figures. "We went
to the pool last weekend."
Others hadn't qulte mastered their
journalistic style yet but lrnpressed
their teacher by nailing some of the
more difficult speUing.s.
"This weekend I went to soccer
pictures,· wrote Joe Alvarado, 6.
Colgate, who was named
Andersen's teacher of the year last
year, has her hands fuU with a
combo class of kindergartners and
first-graders. Moments earlier, she'd
taught k:indergartners words
beginning with ·wand ·s· and
watched them march and dance 10
songs featuring those letters in "The
SUJy Wtlly Workout."
"I really like teaching different
modalities,· she said. "It's not just
reading and writing-it's moving as
weU. Every child's different, but most
of them like to move."
Both classes also spelled out
different words and changed vowel
sounds on cue by adding and taking
away letters that were represented
by color-coded car<b. "Sat" became
"sit." which turned into "it," then
"fit."
Colgate knew the wheels were
turning in her students' heads.
"You're ready to read!" she said.

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY
The truth shows a

By Brett Nitzkowski
C hrls Harano's advice to
Newport Beach voters
that they educate
themselves on the issue or the
Marlnapark resort plan ls right
on rhe mark (Mailbag, Sept.
16).
Why? Because he himself
dabbles in half-truths and
outright inaccuracies in his
description of the resort
project.
The recurring half-truth of
Measure L opponents is the
incessant labeling of the resort
as a timeshare. That just 12 of
the re10rt's 110 units are
designated u timeshares belies
the perception opponents hope
votera wru embrace.
The letter-writer argues as
well that the ·multi-story"
design of the resort will ~reduce
our skytlne around the bay,
particularly for those
homeowners on Udo Bay front,
Newport Heighl5 and
Castaways." The resort plan
comprises 16 villas. some of
them one-story, but none
higher than two stories. We're
not talking Trump Tower here.
In any case, voters should
visit http://www.marinapark
resort.com and eee the to-scale
illustration of the reson and eee
for themselves.
Harano also uys he's apinat

Finally, he would have you

problems." Well, lf Newport
Beach voters take Harano's
advice and educate themselves,
they'll see that the resort's
environmental study shows the
resort provides double the
amount of parking required by
the city. Furthermore, at 1009'
occupancy. It will generate no
more traffic than the current
mobile-home park. which, by
the way, is onJy about 40%
occupied.
Indeed, I hope Newport
Beach voters will educate
themselves.

Habitat project too

Regarding the Habitat for
HumanJty proposaJ to build
eight homes in Costa Mesa, it
Ls important to note that
nearby residents are opposing
the Habitat low-income
proposal for the same reasons
that we opposed a project of
expensive homes on the same
parcel a couple years ago: too
many people, too many cars,
not enough parking and
removal of the one meager
mitigation our street received
for the continuing
disturbances coming from
Home Depot and the closing
off of Wake Forest Road to
through traffic.
The wall and berm between
Home Depot and College Drive
were an integral and important
part of the Harbor Center plan
approved by the City Council.
and It would be hard to accept
the removal of any or this
protection for Home Depot's
long-suffering neighbors.
Adding to the aggravation of
ongoing noise, Habitat will
impose a construction period
of 18 months, including
Saturdaya, with all activity
coming through our residential
streeta. Requests for the same
lcind of protection the previous
prospective builder offered
have been refused.
Add to this the fact that the

report is defective
The draft environmental
report for the luxury resort
hotel at Marinapark is fatally
nawed, as the traffic analysis in
the appendix restricted its
analysis to seven Intersections,
starting with Newport
Boulevard and 32nd Street and
proceeding northward to the
intersection of Newport
Boulevard and Hospital Road.
Thls specifically eliminated
from the traffic analysis
intersections from 30th Street
toward Balboa Boulevard and
continuing easterly to the end
of Balboa and Ocean

In other words, all of the
Balboa area of the peninsula
was eliminated from
consideration, thereby fatally
flawing the traffic analysis.

T here are always tell-tale signs
that autumn baa antved.
Halloween candy and

Major League Baseball teams start to
get a little testy as postseason jos1ting

And Golden West League football
teams start to play each other.
The sevm·team league starts its

Baldwin said. "It's called momentum.
We're playing the best team in the
league. Those type of things happen
when you're losing.·
Westminster and Orange (3-1 ), No. 4
in CIF Southern Section Division Vil
and last year's ~ champion, are the
top league tide contenders this fall
Orange's lone loss this year, a 24·13
defeat at the hands of El Modena. came
in a game that was called with 2:05
remaining because the lights went out
at El Modena's stadium.
1be Panthers, coached byformer
Orange Coast College defensive
lineman Greg Gibson. can score in a
hurry, as evidenced by their 26
second-half points in the season
opener against Muir. Freshman running
back Mathew Contreras has scored
eight touchdowns and has rushed for
close to 500 yards in Orange's four
games.
Westminster rushed for more than
200 yards in its 42-7 blowout of San
Gabriel, last season's CIF Souther
Section Division VII runner-up. The
Uons edged Rancho Alamitos, 14-6, last
week and played tough against
Fountain Valley in the. 13·7,
season-opening loss.
Running back Carlos Broob is
Westminster's most potent weapon,
posing a threat as a runner and receiver
out of the bac:kfleld.
The league championship may very
well be decided Oct. 8 when
