It's a lesson Aaron Peirsol, the
21-year-old Newport Beach
Olympian; learned the hard way
when the duffel bag he had
p&ded his most precious medals
in didn't show up on the con-
veyor belt in Frankfurt. Germany.
Peirsol narrated the story rather
casually. He spoke from the floor
of the very gym where he played
dodge ball and basketball as a
ldd.
The horror story about the lost
medals had a happy ending.

looking for that bag." Peirsol said
as everyone laughed. "I got my
medals back two weeks ago."
The young people sitting on
the bleachers broke out into loud

There have been many
interesting encounters
with critters In m y years of

On one voyage to Hawaii,
we were at 800 nautical
miles out from Honolulu
when a Booby (a bird. not
one of my crew members)
took roost on our radar
tower. The Booby stayed
with our boat for a few
days. I wonder what would
entice a bird to Oy 800
miles from land. The bird
would spot fish from the
tower, and then swoop
down to catch Its prey time
and time again.
When I travel up the
coast to Morro Bay, I often
see several light-brown fur
balls floating In the ocean.
Upon approaching these
floating balls. they become
active and dive
underwater, revealing that
they are actually sea otters
floating on their backs.

DEBATE
Continued from Al
debate team at Vanguard
University.
The Pilot's busin~ and
politics reporter Alida RoblDIOn
spoke with the group after the
debate.
DP: Who gave the moet
substantive answers and on
I which fasues?
Dorrough: I think Kerry gave
more substantive answers about
most of the issues, actually.
Oearly, h e gave more
substantive answers on
some thing I didn't think was
going to be an issue, which was
loose nuclear weapons, and he
also gave a lot more substantive
answers in tenns of dealing with
basicalJy Iran and what's going
on with that, but I think that was
actually strategic. Bush needs to
stay on the message of Kerry
flip-flopping.
Carpenter: I thinX. especially
at the beginning of the debate
and slightly decreasing at the
end of the debate, Bush had five
canned answers that he was
recycling. He basically had just
repeated answers that just kept
going around in circles. You had
Kerry setting out exact, specific
answers of what he planned on
doing. I think Kerry addressed
the issues far more than Bush
did.
OP: Did either can41date
make any rna)or gaffes?

Donough; I don't think either
candidate made major gaffes. I
think sometimes Kerry's
reactions f on camera! seemed a
little harsh, and I think Bush;t.
biggest problem was that
sometimes his pauses seemed a
little too long. They seemed not
natural, they seemed like, "I'm
not quite sure what I'm going to
say."
Pfaff: Kerry used a lot of
patriotic endorsemems and
compared the views of a lot of
different political figures fro111
the pasl to his views. I don'1
think that you should use
patriotic endorsements; I th111k
it's weak. I lhink it can be wry
propagandist. Bush did dance
a.round a lot of the issues. and
he avoided many questions.

The Iraq wa1'1
Coutu: J think lhe person who

was Bush; whether he addressed
it and gave productive

Kerry actually addressed the

Bush just kind of went along

LEITER TO THE EDITOR
PaperSendorsemen~
send wrong signal
R egarding Sunday's Pilot
editorial, "Opportunity
for consensus building
in Costa Mesa," we
have come to expect the
editorial staff of the Dally Pilot
to voice its opinion before every
election as to whom, they
believe. would be the best
candidate(s) for our community.
As we have also come to expect,
they attempt to direct us on how
to vote, while not bothering to
ask us what we want.
The term u consensus
building" is an unctuous phrase
for those of us who have spent
the better pan of four years on
both the Community
Redevelopment Action
Committee and then the
Westside Redevelopment
Oversight Corrunittee -both
fonned to try to improve the
Westside of Costa Mesa and
"facilitate building consensus."
It is well known that previous
City Councils essentially ignored
the Westside, which has the
preponderance of our city's
industrial land. This land is
largely owned and operated by
residents of cities other than
Costa Mesa. This is interesting
to me, as I also own a piece of
industrial land on the Westside.
However, I live adjacent to my
property. Interesting. I say.
because of the three candidates
the Daily Pilot chose to _
represent our best interests for
the future, two are the very
same ones that the Westside
(out-of-town) industrialists have
chosen to represent their best
interests (Mike Scheafer and
Katrina Poley). Was this just a
DON LEACH I DAJLY PILOT

coincidence?
I have never seen any of the
three Pilot candidates on my
side of town. None has polled
me for my viewpoint. I am
lcnown in activist circles on the
Westside, but to the Pilot's
troika and the Westside
industrialists' anointed
candidates, any viewpoints
other than their own appear to
be irrelevant.
It appears that we are now
being told that these three
candidates. who previously had
never made any particular
mention of the Westside, are
suddenly now "gung-ho"
advocates for Westside
improvement Is it another
coincidence that industrial
bosses also endorse two of these
three as advocates for their
interests? Is this not the very
same group of industrial owners
who do not want the threat of
anything disrupting the Oow of
money from their "cash cow,"
especially real improvement and
specifically no new housing in
the part of town they control?
This leads me to believe that the
Pilot also prefers to keep the
same old status quo on the
Westside.
Many Costa Mesans would
lilce to see the Westside move
into a new age of progress, new
opportunity and forward
thinking, rather than suffer
another four years of stagnation
at the hands of an uncaring City
Council supported by residents
of neighhoring cities.

Saturday). No one fits your
stated criterion, "consensus
building," better than Bruce
Garlich, who as a member and
now the chairman of the
Planning Commission, has built
an enviable record of guiding
our city's growth and resolving
critical development issues.
The three candidates you
have endorsed all have
something in common: They
have either run for council
office before and won or have
lost Those efforts should
certainly be commended, but
our city needs leadership, not
just participation. In the two
recent candidate forums.
Gartich demonstrated supenor
knowledge of the issues
confronting the city, unequaled
communication shlls and
qualities of leadership and
mature judgment unmatched
by any other candidate. We
have a rare opportunity ro
capture these attributes for the
benefit of Costa Mesa now, and
we can't afford to keep him
waiting on the sidelines for a
future election. I hope the
Daily Pilot will continue to
review this important race for
Costa Mesa City Council and
find the opportunity to add
Garlich to the list of endorsed
candidates.

Knight's letter quite nJcely

The message ail Costa
Mesans should take away
from his letter is that we are
perceived, by at least a
segment of Newport's
population, as a community
for the impoverished who
consume more in social
services than we contribute to
society. I suppose those of us

must all be on the dole.

Q. Which octane gasOline
shou~d I put in my vehicle?
i_..i--...-....,~~~--~~~~~~--~~~--~:
A It is best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations in the owners'
• manual for the type of engine you have. There is no advantage to using a
higher octane g8$0line that is recommended by the manufacturer end in some
instances the vehicle may actually gel lower mileage on the higher octane gasoline.
The octane number is posted on the fuel pump
and is commonly 87, 89, 91, 92, etc. If you
experience a knocking noise from the engine
that is noticeable on acceleration, you may
wish to try the next higher grade of fuel.
Continuos knocking or prolonged pinging may be a sign of other problenis in the
engine controls UJ'll'elated to gasoline. In this instance you should consult a qualified
technician for diagnosis of the symptom.
