COSTA MESA -A former volunteer

veterinarian who owns the shelter uses
unlicensed technicians to euthaniz.e

Animal Hospital and the Orange County
Humane Society, both on Newland

Samir Botros, the veterinarian and
shelter owner, has consistently denied
the allegadona. On Wednesday, he said
the complaint. filed Sept 15, was yet an-
other attempt by former volunteers to
wage a personal battle against him.
"If you come to my place and tell me
how to run it, and I ask you to leave,
you're not going to be happy," he said.
"The fact that these people are anacldng
my business straight away shows that
this is personal."

veterinary care for the animals.
Several former volunteers also spoke
up at Costa Mesa City Council meet·
ings. The city is looking into whether it
should continue its contract with the
shelter or take its animals elsewhere.

Politics get a little rotten
Newpon Reach City Council candidate John
Buttolph was on the receivinR end nf what
could have been a politJcal statement in the
form of two·do1.en eggs last week. Someone
threw the me<,,sy missiles at h1., house while he
was away one evening, and he theorized that It
could be because he's running for a City
Council seat.
He might not have thought much of the eggs,
except that in mid-August -the day after he
was certified as a candidate -someone
smashed the windshield ofButtolph's car with a
paving stone.
"I certainly can't be sure it's connected to the
campaign,· Burtolph said. "It just seemed like
an unusuaJ set of circumstances occurred when
I'm involved in the election process for the first
time.·
There's also been some vandalism to his
campaign signs. but he figu.ped that's par for the
course. The eggs and the windshield, he said,
were a little discouraging.
"Let's all raise the level of discourse here and
have respect for people of different views," he
said. "We can do better.·
Principles go under politics
Retired five -term state Assemblyman GU

He made the announcement in the group's

need to "save some time to be lazy."
Ferguson is soliciting people to take over the
club, and he'IJ continue writing editorials to
s hare his opinions, like this tidbit from the
recent newsletter: "ls there any doubt in your
mind that Sen. Barbara Boxer is one of the
dumbest people ever to be elected to the U.S.
Senate? Of course not." To get on Ferguson's

I t was interesting to read who
the Dally Pilot recently
endorsed for City Council
("Opportunity for consensus
building In Costa Mesa." Sept
26).
The first person it endorsed
was Linda Dixon. I sincerely
believe that Linda Dixon lost the
last election because of several
reasons.
First, she supported an Ikea al
the heavily congested
intersection of Harbor
Boulevard and the San Diego
Freeway. which most of Mesa
Verde opposed. This project
could have been better
negotiated. Second. she did not
and still does not support an
airport al El Toro. Now, John
Wayne Airport is set to expand.
10 the detriment of Costa Mesa.
Third. she did nol support
anything of substance or show
any leadership on cleaning up
the Westside.
The second person it
endorsed was Katrina Foley .. Sht•
is on record as a planning
commissioner in voting in
support of the Kohl's
department store, where Kona
Lanes used to be. Bruce Garlich
also voted for thtS. Most of Mesa
Verde opposed this. Second. '>he
voted in support of the
double-density project al 190 I
Newport. which consists of
twice the density allowed under
our general plan. Bruce Garlich
also voted for this. Most of Costa
Mesa opposed this because of
the increase in traffic it will
bring. Third, she has not come •
up with anything of substance
or shown any leadership on
cleaning up the Westside.
I personally would like more
support on the council on the
issues that impact our daily
Uves, like traffic and
development issues, airport
issues, Centerline and public
safety. I think. the people In the

The Gdansk Canal flows through historic Gdansk, Poland, a city now more than 1,000 years old.
Poland's pearl of a port

best. Gdansk. Poland. is one of
the places to which we wouJd
love to return. We chose a
particular Baltic cruise itinerary
because it stopped there. Both
Lee's ancestors and mine had
emigrated from Gdansk. in the
late 1800s, though the city then
was known as DaroJg.
· We bused to Gdansk. from our
ship's port, Gdynia. The prefix
"Gd" indicates a place on the
water. Gdansk also is a port city,
and many rivers connect the
cities to the southern gulf area of
lhe Baltic Sea. It is famed for its
ancient ship-loading crane. but
it is an attractive place to vii.it for
many reasons.
Gdansk. celebrated iti.
1,000-year anniversary in 1997,
and it has been spruced up for
tlie pleasure of ciuzens and

500,000 inhabitants. Lee and I
were thrilled to be able to view
Gdansk as it was when our

rose•again in all its charming
splendor. The narrow buildings
with scalJoped roofs called to
our mind~ the canal uty of

homes around Gdansk's city

frescoes that suggest the weaJlh

buildings are topped with
statues of cl~ical design.
Everywhere you look.. there 1s
some delightful surprise. Where

Continued from AlO
including Prussia, Germany and
Poland. The history of Gdansk is
tied to the shipping trade, of
course, and to history etched in
our times by Gdansk's
connection to Solidarity, the
union movement founded at the
Gdansk shipyard by Lech
Walesa. The Solidarity Museum
there helped us appreciate the
plight and courage of the
workers in the shipyard and the
factories who united to strike for
lower food prices and improved
working conditions for future
generations. Other famed
Gdanskis include
Schopenhauer, Glinter, Grass
and Fahrenheit.
One thing my husband and I
appreciate about cruising is that
we become aware of the social
differences between other
countries and our own. We
gathered from our guides that.
while most of the Baltic Sea
states we visited had high
income tax.es. most of their
governments provide free
education through college for
qualified students and free
healthcare for all workers and
their families. All children are
covered by government
insurance through the age of 18
or when they graduate from
college, and maternity leaves in
some countries last up to three
years at half pay for the
mothers. The citizens might
complain of high taxes, but they
. have a lot to show for paying
them, including good health
and educations, clean towns
and healthy economies.
This cruise, on the Grand
Princess, also took us to Oslo,
Stockholm. Helsinki, St.
Petersburg, Tallinn (Estonia) and
Copenhagen. But we treasure
our visit to Gdansk 111ost. On our
next trip there, we'd like to visit
the town archives. We've heard
that Gdansk has excellent
records of emigrants that might
divulge infonnation about our
own families' departures.
