simply informed their families
that chey were going to get
married because they couldn't
wait to be together all the time.
After graduating. the couple
moved to Menlo Park. where
Jaclc got a job with United
Airlines. One evening. he came
home from wort and asked his
wife if ahe wanted to go to
Europe. Beverly nodded with
excitement They sold their cars
and left their rented house and
moved to Gennany, just on a
whim.
Jaclc started graduate school
and also worked part-time as a
pilot who took wealthy people
on vacations. He had fun on the
job, traveling to Africa. Greece,
Jerusalem and many European
countries. Jack and Beverly
traveled every weekend to
Holland, Austria and Paris,
taking the train all over Europe.
They spent two of the best
years of their lives ln Europe,
but returned to the United
States after Jaclc's brother-in-law
died suddenly. But it wasn't the
only reason they came baclc.
They were ready to return home.
After coming home, Jack
thought about what he wanted
to do. Then, it occurred to him:
Why not go into real estate in
the place you love the best?
Newport Beach was his answer.
They bought a fixer-upper in
Balboa Peninsula The couple
enjoyed the beach. Jack loved
bodysurfing at the Wedge. Jaclc
enjoyed diving for abalone. He
would go deep down into the
caves, where a lot of people
wouldn't go.
Jaclc was hard-working, but he
aJso knew how to have a good
time. He took his family to
vacations in the Aorida Keys,
the High Sierras. He loved to go
fishing in the mountains.
Although he left the Air Force

his P-38 days. He was proud of
his service and felt a sense of

dangerous, mis.sions he set out

He had some funny stories
too. Ja'* talked about his unit's
days ln the Philippines when
they camped out in a bamboo
house on stilts. A crowing
rooster would wake them up too
early in the morning. One
morning, the men got way too
annoyed and poured cold water
on the bird to shoo It away. But
as it turned out, the bird died.
And it also happened to be their
unit commander's prized
fighting coclc.
He also talked about an
uniuclcy bed ln their camp,
whose occupants ended up
dying on missions one after
another. Jaclc and his friends
ended up burning that bed.
Jack always said hi.s missions
were long. But he never
mentioned fear. He didn't like
the word "scared." But as photo
reconnaissance pilot he knew
that he had to maintain radio
silence when he was on enemy
territory. Jaclc knew that if
something went wrong, he
couldn't even radio hi.s friends
and tell them; "Tell my family I
love them."
Jack was an active member of
the P-38 National Assn. He was
one of its founding directors ln
1987. Participating ln those
meetings and P-38 conventions
was his favorite hobby toward
the end of his life. He also
collected a lot of aviation art.
Oose to 70 paintings hang in
Jack and Beverly's Palm Springs
home.
But Jack enjoyed his days by
the beach. He loved life.
ln his own words: "The cost of
living is high. but It's worth it·
themselves on how to promote
peace."
The festival was the brainchild
of author Jonathan Schell, who
has worked with the citizens'
program ln the past, Baker said.

Facts should drive
Measure L vote
T here are people tn
Newport Beach who
would like to oonvtnce
the voters that Measure L
is bad for Newport Beach.
Bad because it will allow a hotel
by local developer Steve &.itberland
Bad because Sutherland's
financing is backed by a so-called
strip club owner out of las Vegas.
Bad because it will take away
park.land.
Bad because of potential traffic
problems.
Bad because of liens against
property in Orange County by
Sutherland.
Bad because of improper
documents.
Bad because Sutherland is bad for
Newport Beach.
But don't be fooled.
Measure I isn't a vote for or
against Steve Sutherland specifically.
It's actually a vote on a potential
land-use issue for Newport Beach.
It's quite simple, really. Do you, a
residenl of Newport Beach. want the
land in the Marinapark area to be
(a) changed in the general plan to
permJt a resort with a maximum of
1 lO guest units, a community center
and a public recreation facility, or
(b) don't you? At this point. it has
nothing to do with Sutherland It
also has nothing to do with the
current city parkland already there
and actually will require public
recreation on three acres.
If and when the voters vote yes,
Sutherland then has the first
opportunity to complete a potential
deal to build ~ttls" hotel property
there -but not before satisfying
environmental concerns, financial
issues and moral-character
q_uestions concerning him and his
backers in front of the City Council.
Before we even get to that point.
these naysayers would have you
believe that Sutherland is an evil
developer out to destroy the
ambience of the Balboa Peninsula.
In fact, Sutherland. a 43-year
resident of Newport Beach, is
anything but. The projec1 he has
proposed. which includes a small
upscale hotel on the property,
includes a new Girl Scout facility
that will be second-to-none and an
additional $500,000 toward the
refurbishing of the American Legion
If all.
The naysayers don't want to taUc
about this.
They're too busy slinging mud in
an effort to cloud the thinking of the
Newport Beach public.
These naysayers, also known as
Greenlighters. fUp-flop more than
other more noted politicians. Here's
the best example: In 2000, they
successfuDy fought to impo1e
Measure S on the city and require
large general-plan amendments to
be voted on by the public. Now
they're opposed to a public wte
because it just might pass. They
even have a lawsuit waiting in the
wings. just in case it does.
These naysayers would have you
believe that Sutherland is backed by
tainted money. His form.er partner
Michael TaDa was.raUd over the
coals and called by these very
people a Mstrip club owner."
Thlla. in fact, has a vast and
diverse investment portfolio led by
investments in such businesses as
the Sports Oub of Irvine, an upscaJe
workout facility that sets the
standard in its class. The fact that
one of'Thlla's many investments
includes ownership in a topless
dance club in Las Vegas makes him
no more of a strip club owner than
Donald lhunp, who owns hotels
and caainos t.hat include burlesque
shows.
Sutherland, too, has been beaten
down as the enemy. when in fact, he
was just one of eight groups who
responded to a request for proposal
by the city of Newport Beach to
develop the land known as
Marinapalk.
The state of Uilifomia has
detennined that Newport Beach is
in violation of land use on tidelands
by allowing the mobile homes on
Marinapark. They were told to
correct the situation or lose the
rights of this property to the state.
Sutherland was one of the
innocent few who then followed up
with a project proposal for a bener
use of the land. Never in ttls mind
did he expect to find the negativity
instilled by the Greenligbters.
Whether the voters approve
Measure Lor vote it down, we
believe the public needs to know
just how much backstabbing and
dirt throwing is being done and how
that is blurring the real i· sue-the
best use of the land at ~ mnaparlc.
The aforementioned group of
naysayers wants to control the
Newport Beach political
community, even to the point of
stopping the democradc vote that
they once fought to incorporate in
the City Owter.
They want their voice heard loud
and clear but nobody else's.
We think the voters should let
their shrill voices fall on deaf ears
this time around and make up their
own minds on what is the best thing
for the city of Newport Beach, based
on the facts and not character
as.sassination.

LE I I ER TO THE EDITOR
A sad sign for political process
D wing the ~t days of September,
a number of campaign signs
promoting •Mirna Burciaga for
City Council" were taken from
placements around the city, including
one taken from my own yard. These
signs were seen in the yard of a Mesa
Verde resident
On Sat. Oct. 2, another Costa Mesa
resident and business owner observed a
male, about 5 foot 10 inches to 6 feet
tall, driving a red Dodge Ram with a red
camper, tlking similar signs Conn
placements along Gisler Avenue. The
observer yelled at the individual. asking
him what he was doing. The individual
threw the signs he was carrying into
nearby bushes and quickly re-entered
his Dodge Ram truck. making a U-tum
and speeding away down Country Oub
Drive. The resident recognized the
truclc. which had been seen in the
vicinity of his business on several
occasions.
The saddest footnote of all is that a
passenger accompanying the driver
during the above event of Oct. 2 was a
young, school age boy. This young
person. quite posmbility the son of the
driver, is getting the worst kind of
education. Al a very early,
impressionable age, he is learning from
a dose role model that unscrupulous
behnlor in potidcs Is OK whenever you
wish to achieve your goalg.
I am sad. rather than angry about the
signs. We should be looking to the voice
of the people to decide on the
WATCHDOG
leadership of ow city, yet individuals are
intent on interrupting our process of
elections. We deplore the deadly attacb
on voters in Afghanistan and Iraq, but
these actions have exactly the same
intent. that of undermining the election
process. It is Wlfortunate that they are
happening in ow own baclt yard.
Let's hope that the people responsJble
come forth or are identified. not for the
pwpose of punishment, but to bring an
end to this type of activity. Lefs have
our eJection decided in a public forum.
not by sneaky, underhanded acts.

The images yield a common
theme: Beaches. Sutherland, 55,
has dm>ted a career to designing
prlstine villas ln places like the
southern tip of Baja c.aiifomia But
now, in his own back yard, he has
walked Into a battle.
Sutherland wants to build a

Marinapm site, where mobile

and Las Arenas Pad now co·exist
ln an area off of West Balboa

F.asier said than done.
He bas m et opposition even
though he was picked by the city to
design the project. Opponents,
such as Protect Our Parks lead er
Tom Billings, argue that
Sutherland's plan will create
congestion while commercializing
prime public land for which there
are better development
alternatives.
But Sutherland has tenaclo u.cJly
been busy holding to a familiar
refrain. "Nothing is not an option"
forthe site, he says, as he gears up
for Nov. 2. It's then when the public
the private property signs the trailer
park installed.
From a traffic standpoint, according
to the city's certified environmen tal
lmpact report. the reson won't generate
any m ore traffic at 100% occupancy
than the current mobile home parlc,
which is roughly 40% occupied. And,
the resort plan provides twice as much
on-site parking that the city requires.
The public will not onJy be welcomed,

The Sea Kings, though, made It diffi-

forcing several outside shots.
WThat's the best oui defense has
played all year," CdM Coach Sam Bai-

They were more aware of what was
happening around them instead of fo-
cusing on just one guy."
Kyle Hersh, who tallied three assiats,
started the third quarter with a steal,
which led to the second of Money's

Rewind ... four years earlier,
when those in the 300-pound

Johns, Matt Riggle. Mike

It was Riggle who was the
centerpiece. the one who stood
out, because support comes in
many ways, but seldom as in the
case of Riggle, whose dad, Dave,
was a spectator of every practice
and every game.
The Sailors' 12th man became

The Pilot's Dream Team was
stocked with Johnson as MVP
and Johns as Defensive Player of
the Year. First-team selections
went to Giordani, Benzinger.
Pulido, Freeman. Sherif Pepic,
Brandon Baker, Moureaux,
McDonough. Riggle. Hogan and
Sandstrom. Brinkley, of course,
was the Coach of the Year.
CIF Player of the Year laurels
went to Johnson and other
All·CIF picks were Freeman.
Hogan, McDonough, Pepic and
my favorite assassin. Bill Johns.
Today the ·04 team continues
to build on its no nleague
endeavors as it enters its finaJ
tuneup up for Sea View League
play. And guess who they'll be
hattling Friday night? The
Foothill Knights. at Tustin High.
