Sanitation District officials vastly under-
estimated the si1.e of a Labor Day week-
end sewage spill, which released about
1.6-million gallons of treated wastewa-
ter rather than the original estimate of
13,000 gallons, officials said Thursday.
Beaches from 52nd Street in Newport
Beach to Magnolia Street in Huntington
Beach were closed Sept 4 after a power
failure caused the spill from a Hunting-
ton Beach pump station.
The spUl is being investigated by the
Santa Ana Regional Water Quality C.On-
trol Board, a normal foUow-up pro-
cedure that could result in a penalty for
whomever caused the spill.
w0ur investigation is not yet com-
plete, so we have not yet determined
what further action to take in that case,"
regional water board spokesman Kurt
The sanitation district underesti-
mated the al7.e of the spill because it
had a limited time to report the spill to
the water board, but officials have since
taken a closer look and hired an outside
consultant to study it. said Bob Ghirelli,

The park's 54 residents suggested

With a renewed lease. some
residents might even put upscale

COMMUNITY COMMENTARY
Back to a preserved future
M ay I reminisce for a
moment, in order to
make a larger point?
As a child, I remember driving
to Newport Beach on Friday
nights, after my rather, actor
John Carradine, finished
filming for the week. He was
then under contract to 20th
Century Fox studios, and there
was a regularity to his life-
his weekends were free! He
had bought a wonderful,
wood-hulled. two-masted,
65-foot schooner. the Bali He
loved the sea and sailing on it.
Most every weekend the family
-Dad, Mother, David and I -
would pack up, pile in another
or dad's priz.ed possessions, a
Duisenberg convertible, and
drive to Ne>Arport Beach, where
the Bali was moored in a slip
near what is now Marinapark..
There were a few summer
cottages on the island, no
major developrnenl, lors of
sand and empty space.
disappearance of simplicity,
moderation and tranquillity.
But reasonable conuols and
restraint are still po~Je, given
a willing citizenry and a
responsjbJe and responsive
city government, city mayor
and City Council. I believe the
~ue of Marina park is an
example of where restraint and
moderation are called for.

Election season is almost over, and on

Costa Mesa City Hall. Here's what he found.

propels the SCR comedy-
Bennett has written much of his
dlalogue in rhyme, so that the
piece plays much liU a
Shakes~ comedy. but
modernized with such lines as
•0oo't tell me you wouldn't,
given the choice I Old men with
schoolgirls, ladles with boys."
Director Rauch has pulled out
all the comedic stops to offer
SCR audiences a rampantly
hilarious bundle from Britain
that has been far too long in
arriving on our shore. Also, if
you remember the late 1960s
and early '70s, you'll get an
additional belt out of Paul James
Prendergast's nostalgjc musical
background.

"The sports coupe segment ls
incredlbty competitive and you
have to keep improving to stay
ahead of the curve,· said Dick
Colliver, executive 'lice president,
sales. "We've made substantial
performance, handling and
styling enhancements for 2005
that will keep the RSX at the top
of its class. "
The 2005 RSX is available in
two versions, the sporty RSX and
the high-performance RSX
fype-S. Both models are
powered by advanced=
that feature 1-VTEC "in t"
valve--control systems,
'combining VfEC (Var\able Valve
Tuning and Uft Electronic
Control) with vrc (Variable
Tuning Control). The i-VTEC
system deUvers enhanced
performance across a broad
power band in addition to
superior fuel economy and low
exhaust emissions.
To deliver a race-bred driving
experience, the RSX is equipped
with a 16-valve DOHC 2.0-Uter
four-cylinder engine that
produces an impressive 160
horsepower and 141 lb-ft.. of
torque.
For 2005, the high
performance Type-S model
receives engine and exhaust
system modifications that boost
horsepower from 200 to 210 and
torque from 142 lb.-ft to 143
lb-ft. Engine output was
optimized by applying high
performance camshafts and
enlarging the diameter of the
intake duct by IO percent. A
larger diameter exhaust pipe and
free-flowing catalytic converter
helped to boost horsepower by
increasing exhaust How by 10
percent.
Remark.ably. given their
considerable power, both RSX
engines meet stringent CARB
Low Emissions Vehicle-II (UN-2)
standards and are designed to
nm for 110,000 miles before the
first acheduled tune-up.
The RSX comes with either a
5-speed manual transmission or
an optional 5-speed Sequential
SportShift automatic
transmismon that operates like a
conventional automatic or, in
Spor1Shift mode, pulB gear
selection in the hands of the
driver. The automatic
transmission also features Grade
Logic Control, which reduces
shift frequency by holding the
engine in a lower
gear for better hill climbing
and increased engine braking.
The 'fype-S is equipped
exclusively with a 6-speed,
close-ratio manual transmission
for quick. responsive shifting. For
2005, the final drive ratio on this
transmission was lowered to
provide even quicker
acceleration while shift feel was
improved by applying carbon
synchronizers on fifth and sixth
gear.
To meet the demands of the
true driving enthusiast, the
chassis of both RSX models
feature track-tuned suspensions
and steering systems for
exceptional handling precision.
outstanding cornering grip and a
smooth, controlled ride.
A unique Control-Unk
MacPherson strut front
suspension and a compact
double-wishbone rear
suspension system heJvdeliver
quick. confident handling, and a
smooth, compliant ride whlle
maximizing interior room. On
the Type-S. the track-tuned
suspension is optimized with
finner sprin~ and dampers, a
front strut tower bar aod a rear
performance rod.
For 2005, the IUSpeDSlons on
both RSX models wme optimized
through an asaortment of
modifications designed to
enhance handling while
promoting an even smoother
ride. Suspension enhancements
for 2005 include a revised
geometry, reduced ride height,
retuned bushings, thicker
stabill7.er bars. firmer damper
se~ and .inversely wound
front coil springs that neutralize
unwanted steering input caused
by spring windup. On the 'fype-S
model, the strength of the
performance rod was also
increased to help maintain
precise suspension geometry,
while the front damper top
busb1ng was l'ep1aced by a
bearing, for smoother steering
response.
Scandard 4-wbeel dilc brakes
with a 3-cbannel And-lock
Braking System (ABS) help to
provide seam stopJ>inl power.
The RSX ia equipped with
10.3-lnch vendlated d!lca ln front
and 102-incb discs at the rear. Tu
match its additional
pedormance capabilities. the
RSX
'fype-S uses larger 11.8-inch
ventilated discs up front. For
2005, a larger diameter master
cylinder was applied to inaease
hydraulic pressure, the rigidity of
the brake pedal increased and
the pedal stroke was reduced
These enhancements combined
to both enhance stopping power
and improve braking feel
The RSX utiHzes a
bigh-moWlted rack-and-pinion
power steering system that
provides enhanced tracldng
stability, and toe control as well
as a linear steering feel This
system was enhanced for 2005 by
applying a quicker steering ratio,
a more rigid steering column and
by increasing pump flow by
seven pemmt to provide more
responsive steering and an even
more linear, on-center steering
feel
The RSX model wears grippy
205/55Rl6 Michelin all-season
hlgh-pedormance tires on
restyled five-spoke alloy wheels.
To further enhance the 'fype-S
model'• handling prowess for
2005, ll!ltyled 17x7-inch alloy
wheels and Mlchelin 215/45Rl7
all-season high-performance
tires were applied.
The exterior styling of the RSX
communicates a message of
power and predlSon tluough
short front and rear overhangs,
sweepJng runes and sharply
dUtleled l1nee. For 2005,
