Bromberg is running unopposed A s traight-shooter who has led the city in its efforts to take more control at John Wayne Airport and in the harbor, Bromberg's lack of an opponent in Disuict 5 illustrates his strength as a politician. He is well-versed in city issues and decisive, but his tenure has not been solely focused on mundane city issues. He also was instrumental in the city adopting Marines from Camp Pendleton, a relationship that is sure to flourish in Steve the coming years. Bromberg He deserves Newport Beach voters' support. Also deserving that support are Councilmen John I leff eman and Steve Rosansky. BOLTON COMMUNITY COMMENTARY By Joe Perrin& H abitat for Humanity of Orange County would like to Shank everyone who suppotted our recent proposal t o build eight new homes in Costa Mesa. We are disappointed that these homes were not approved by the Costa Mesa City Council during their meeting on Oct. 18. BIO WHO: Mark Korando WHAT: Acting executtve director of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County RESIDENCE: Costa Mesa ~Y: Wife Cherie and one son LIFE-CHANGING EX- PERIENCE 'I first saw an ad in the paper, "Habitat Needs Volunteers for a Jimmy Carter Blitz Build." I just had to see how a bunch of unskilled volunteers could build three homes in one week. Seeing the homes take shape and finished in that short of a time, and working alongside th e families, struck a chord in me that was a profound life-changing experience. These were hard-working families that just wanted a decent, safe place to raise their children. That was in 1995. l came home worn out and tired after that week and told my wife this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my professional life' • Habitat for Humanity volunteers bulld homes, they ate building the futures of not Only families, but endre commUnldes. What Habitat and Korando - who bu served u executive director of Habltat's Orange C.Ounty organization since Sept. 15 -do In Orange County has been in the news recently. The C.Osta Mesa City Council decided on Oct. 18 that Habitat would not be able to build an affordable-housing development on a site behind Harbor Center. The decision pleased neighbors in the area, who questioned the effect the eight proposed homes would have on the neighborhood. But it disappolnted Korando and others, who saw the project as yet another way to provide homes for working families and maJce use of a 1 l /2-acre parcel. But life goes on for Korando, and Habitat's mission -to end substandard housing through affordable, no-interest loans and the help of volunteers - survives.
