While walking through

Nichols was quick to explain
"This ls a very stately bird,

Nichols said. "They're

at something.•
At the lnterpretive center,
Nichols is well·regarded for
his willingness to help out
with a variety of tasks and
learn more about the bay's
wildlife.

about Bob is he's always

Nichols joined the U.S.
Navy in the waning days of
World War 11 and was
trained to serve on a combat
air crew. The war ended
before Nichols could be sent
to a battle zone, but he
stayed ln the Naval Reserve
and earned a business
degree at UCI.A
While ln a botany class in
his first year of college,
Nichols met his wife, Donna.
They were ma.rrled two days
before the Korean War broke
out In June 1950, and he was
called back to active duty In
October. He served as a
supply officer a.board an
aircraft carrier until 1952
and stayed In the reserve
until he retired as a
conunander when he
turned 65.
The Nicholses can trace
their volunteerism back to
the 1960s, when Donna
Nichola joined the Friends
of the NewpoJl Bay, a group
that sought to prevent the
development of the
wetlands.
The Nichols did not play a
major role ln the battles to
preserve the bay. but both
became volunteers at the
lnterpretive center after it
opened, when the couple
saw an ad seelclng
volunteers ln 2001, Bob
Nichols said.
"My wife and I said. 'That
would be interesting we
ought to do that.'" Bob
Nichols said.

There are, though. no questions
about Lavery'a dedication to the sport

season, earning just more than $24,300.
His best finish is a tie for 13th at the
Boot Heel Golf Oub in Sikeston, Mo.
Lavery has tallied 15 rounds in the
60s and has a 71.6 scoring average.
The four-round events have helped
season Lavery's golf game to what PGA
golfers experience each week. but have
also provided a lesson in handiing a
rigorous travel schedule.
Lavery has earned additional income
from competing in the occasional
Nationwide or Pepsi tour stop.
The tour stop in Silceston was the
furthest west of any of the 18 Hooters
tournaments Lavery has-played thus
far.
From March through September,
Lavery said he slept in his own bed at
home in Mission Viejo just three nights.
The travel, though, doesn't bother
Lavery because golf Is what he loves to
do.
Lavery won the Big West Conference
individual tide as a UCI senior in 2003
while helping the Anteaters win their
third straight conference crown. Before
college, Lavery starred at Irvine Hlgh.
But It wasn't until the final round of
the 2002 Costa Mesa city championship
that Lavery knew he wanted to play golf
foraliving. ...
Lavery was near the lead and in the
last group that Sunday with two
spectators following in golf carts.
"I made contact on one shot and
they erupted," Lavery saJd. "That made
me decide I had to [play golf) for a
living."
Lavery went on to finish second to
champion Tuytor Wood by two shots.
A typical day on the road these days
for Lawry will include an 18-hole
round followed by a two-or three-hour
practice ses..ion.
When back home, depending on how
he feela, Lavery will spend anywhere
from two hours to six hours honing his
skills, moat likely at M.laaton Viejo
